Hidden in my own house, I listened as the heir demanded that I be found, but suddenly fear appeared on Elena’s face

That night I was hiding in my own bedroom while my housekeeper covered my mouth with her hand and whispered that if I made a sound, I would never leave alive.

Elena’s hand was cold, but her fingers clutched my jaw so tightly, as if my life were held in her hands. For a moment I could not recognize her. For three years she had made my coffee every morning, arranged the newspapers on the table, and known exactly what time I left the house. I had never seen her frightened.

But now she was trembling.

“Quiet, Mr. Vincent,” she told me, holding her breath. “They think you are outside the city. If they find out you are hiding here, you will never get out of this room.”

It was eleven o’clock at night. A light came on outside the bedroom, and the sound of heavy footsteps was heard on the floor. She dragged me to her wardrobe, where my jackets hung, then carefully closed the door and left only a small crack.

Three armed men appeared on the marble floor. One wore black gloves, another had a small communication device on his ear, and the third went straight toward the painting behind which my personal safe was hidden.

He was not searching.

He knew.

Sweat slid down the back of my head. I had turned the house into a fortress: cameras in every corridor, a coded elevator, silent alarm buttons, and security at every gate. But not a single signal had gone off.

Someone had let them inside.

“We opened the safe,” said the man, and the scraping of the iron lock was heard. “There is money and some papers.”

“The real files are somewhere else,” another voice answered. “We have to find him himself.”

Then the footsteps stopped.

A familiar voice sounded beyond the door.

“Check every room once more. By this time he should have been in the house.”

My heart was beating so hard that I thought they would hear it beyond the wardrobe.

Marcus.

My nephew. The boy I had raised in my house after his father’s death. The young man whose first job I had found, whose first shares I had given him, and whom I had publicly named as the future head of the entire company.

Elena squeezed my arm. There was no surprise in her eyes.

That frightened me most of all.

“Uncle Vincent never changes his routine,” Marcus said coldly. “Daniel told me he left the headquarters an hour ago.”

Daniel was the head of my security.

And I trusted him precisely.

One of the men began to laugh.

“Maybe the old man slept somewhere else today.”

“Then we will find him,” Marcus answered. “We need him alive until he tells us where he keeps the main documents.”

My fingernails dug into my palm. I had spent my whole life building a company on which thousands of families depended. And Marcus was ready to turn everything into a bloody inheritance.

Elena brought her face close to my ear.

“There is one more thing you do not know, Mr. Vincent,” the whisper barely passed between her lips.

Her gaze froze on the crack in the door.

“This is not happening only because of the money and the company.”

At that moment the bedroom door opened all the way. Marcus’s steps stopped beside the wardrobe. From outside, a hand slowly rose toward the lock, while Elena put her hand on the small pistol hidden beneath the clothes and…

…fingers touched the lock, but just then the sound of breaking glass came from the lower floor. All three armed men instinctively turned around.

Marcus lowered his hand.

“Who is there?” he shouted.

Elena seized my wrist and pulled me toward the back wall of the wardrobe. Behind it was a narrow wooden panel, which until then I had thought was merely decoration. She took a thin metal key from her pocket, turned it in the lock, and the panel opened silently.

It was two in the morning when I first found myself in the old service tunnel of the house. The smell of damp came from the walls, and cold stone slid beneath my feet.

“Only my father and the head of security should have known about this route,” I whispered.

“Now others know too,” Elena replied. “That is precisely why we cannot stay here.”

“Who are you?”

For a moment she lowered her eyes.

“A person who realized far too late whom she was protecting.”

At the end of the tunnel we entered a small room. There was an old boiler, rusty keys hanging on the wall, and a dusty telephone. Elena took a small memory card from beneath the telephone and placed it in my palm.

“I found this three weeks ago in the backup recorder of the camera in your office,” she said. “Someone restored the deleted recordings.”

“And why didn’t you give it to me then?”

“Because that same day Daniel arrested my brother.”

Her voice broke for the first time.

“He told me that if I said anything to you, my brother would die in prison. He fabricated a false charge against him.”

I leaned against the wall. The cold stone froze into my back, but what hurt me more than my body was that Elena had fought alone in the enemy’s house all this time.

“Did my wife know?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” she said. “But a member of your family is not acting alone.”

A heavy impact of the floor sounded from above. Dust scattered through the tunnel.

“Marcus found the tunnel,” I said.

“No,” Elena shook her head. “He has never known about this route.”

Then the telephone rang in the dark room.

We both flinched.

The ring of the old apparatus was so loud, as if it were announcing our location to the whole house. Elena signaled me not to answer, but the ringing did not stop.

!!!  They were taking Grandma to a restaurant, but three hours later, they left her at a nursing home—when I asked about it, my father stopped smiling for the first time.

On the third ring I picked up.

“Vincent,” said a woman’s voice. “If you want Elena and your brother to remain alive, come alone to the old station at eight tomorrow morning.”

“Who are you?”

“A person who knows why you must die before Marcus takes control of the company.”

The connection ended.

Elena looked at my face.

“My brother is not with them,” she said quietly.

“Then how do they know about him?”

She looked at the memory card.

“Because that call was not for me at all.”

Before I could demand an answer, a green indicator lit up on the other wall of the room. Someone had remotely activated our old alarm system.

One message appeared on the screen beneath my name: Trust only the person who protected you even after death.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

Elena looked at the screen and her face changed.

“Your brother Alex did not die twenty years ago in the way you were told.”

With these words, the iron door at the end of the tunnel opened. No one stood there; only a wooden box placed on the floor could be seen. On its lid, in my brother’s handwriting, was written: To Vincent, when you can no longer escape the truth…

Elena reached toward the box, but before she touched it, Marcus’s voice came down from above.

“Uncle, it is time for you to learn who this house really belongs to…”

…Marcus’s voice returned through the tunnel as an echo, and for the first time I realized that he knew our location.

It was six in the morning. Elena’s hand still rested on the pistol, but I touched her wrist.

“Not yet,” I told her. “I want him to say it himself.”

The iron door opened and Marcus came down with two men. Daniel came behind him. The head of security had a calm face, as if everything of this night were ordinary work.

“Open the box, Uncle,” Marcus said.

“First tell me what happened to my brother.”

His smile disappeared.

“You always asked too many questions.”

Elena lifted the lid of the box. Inside lay folded letters, old bank receipts, and a small voice recorder on whose side my brother’s initials were engraved.

I pressed my finger to turn it on.

For several seconds only hissing could be heard. Then Alex’s voice sounded.

“Vincent, if you are listening to this, Marcus is already acting against you. I did not die in an accident. Daniel drove the car off the road, but before that I saw Marcus changing the company’s accounts.”

Silence fell in the tunnel.

Daniel took a step backward.

“This is falsified,” he said.

In the recorder Alex continued:

“Marcus found my body and covered up the death. I hid because I knew Vincent would be next. If I ever return, he will already have my signed evidence.”

!!!  Fiul meu a fost declarat mort, dar în ziua comemorării un străin a apărut lângă mormânt, iar sora mea a amuțit

Marcus stepped on the recorder with his foot, but Elena drew her pistol.

“Don’t touch it.”

Her voice was no longer trembling.

I picked up the receipts. Each showed transfers from secret accounts into a fund opened in Marcus’s name. On the last page stood Daniel’s signature.

“You wanted to kill me,” I told Marcus.

“Not your death, your disappearance,” he answered coldly. “As long as you were alive, I could never become what belongs to me.”

“Nothing belongs to you.”

“I built everything together with you!”

“I built you,” I said. “But you destroyed your humanity yourself.”

Marcus moved toward me. Daniel raised his weapon. At that same moment the voice of the police sounded from the upper door of the tunnel.

“Drop your weapons!”

Marcus looked at me, as if I were his last hope.

“You reported me?”

“No,” I said. “Your words reported you.”

Elena took the memory card from me and handed it to the police officer. It contained not only the camera recordings, but also Marcus’s conversation: how he ordered them to bring us into the house, how he asked Daniel to kill me, and how he planned to transfer the company’s shares.

Marcus was handcuffed. Daniel was taken away too.

I thought everything was over.

But just then my wife Claire’s desperate scream came from the upper floor. The telephone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Alex is alive,” said a man. “And at this moment he is with your wife. If you think that by arresting Marcus you saved your family, you are very mistaken…”
