Part 4 — My family did not invite me and my children for Christmas, but Rachel looked at me in front of my door and suddenly turned pale

That person had a key to my house.

“Who is it?” I asked.

The woman’s voice fell silent for several seconds.

“Roger. Your father.”

My father covered his face with his hands.

My mother looked at him frightened.

But Jake stood up so quickly that the chair tipped over onto the floor.

“I didn’t know about this.”

“You knew nothing until the truth turned against you,” Rachel said.

The investigator continued from the phone:

“The documents have already been sent to the bank. Please come to our office at ten in the morning. The obligation made out in your name has been temporarily suspended, but only if you present us with the original recording.”

“I have the recording,” I told her.

Rachel put her hand on the laptop.

“Not only the recording. You have everything they hid for years.”

Jake came over to me.

“Liam, let’s negotiate.”

“Now?”

“I didn’t know that Father had signed.”

“But you knew you wanted something from me. That is why you came.”

“I only wanted to save the business.”

“In my name.”

He bit his lips.

“You could still help.”

That was the one sentence that finally put everything in order. He did not say that he loved me. He did not say that he regretted it. He only said that my help still belonged to him.

“No, Jake. Not anymore.”

My father came toward me.

“I signed only because I did not want to lose the company.”

“And why did you have to make me lose my life?”

“I thought you would help us.”

“That is exactly the problem. You always thought so.”

The next morning I went to the bank building. The cold marble floor slid under my feet, and enormous clocks hung on the walls. The investigator, Nino, was waiting for me in a small room. Three folders lay on the table.

“This is a copy of your signature,” she told me. “And here is Jake’s electronic correspondence.”

“How did you obtain it?”

“His financial adviser came to us. He no longer wanted to take responsibility.”

Nino turned on the recording.

Jake’s voice sounded in the room.

“Tell Liam that this is only temporary security. He will not refuse his family. If he resists us, let’s speak to Mother. She feels guilty.”

I was listening to my own brother’s words and could not believe that once I had prepared his schoolbag for him when Mother worked the night shift.

My father’s voice appeared in the recording.

“We must not tell him anything. If he finds out, he will not sign.”

Nino turned off the sound.

“Do you want to file a complaint?”

I stared at the folder for a long time.

“Yes.”

It was not revenge. It was a boundary that I drew very late, but still drew.

That same evening Jake came alone to the house. Rachel was no longer wearing her engagement ring. My mother and father were sitting in his car and did not get out.

“May I come in?” he asked.

“No.”

“Just five minutes.”

“Say it here.”

Snow had already begun. Flakes fell on Jake’s hair, but he did not notice them.

“I am not your enemy.”

“If those words were true, you would not be here now asking for my help.”

“The company will close.”

“Maybe.”

“The employees will lose their jobs.”

“That is no longer my decision.”

“You can save it.”

“Once again? And what will be left for me this time?”

He could not find an answer.

Just then he took out his phone and played a recording. It was the conversation that had taken place at my house two days earlier. I heard my own voice saying, “My children are not suitable for your life?” Then my mother’s voice, Rachel’s answer, Jake’s words.

For the first time Jake heard himself from the outside.

“You always try to ruin my life because you couldn’t accept that I moved forward.”

The recording ended.

Jake stood motionless.

“I don’t speak like that,” he whispered.

“You speak like that when you think no one is listening.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I am not a bad person.”

“I don’t know whether you are bad or not. I only know that for far too long you let me pay for your consequences.”

“Rachel left me.”

For the first time I noticed that there was fear in his voice instead of wealth and confidence.

“She deserved the truth.”

“Are you happy?”

The question was unexpected.

“Not yet. But I am free.”

Jake raised his head. Behind him the streetlight fell on the snow as a yellow patch.

“Could you ever forgive me?”

“Forgiveness is possible. Trust has to be built again. And I am no longer going to build it for you.”

He nodded and left.

Several weeks later my parents’ house was emptied. The bank sold the house because the old debt had not been fully paid. I went there only once, to take away the things. Jake’s room was empty. The frame of his childhood photograph hung on the wall, but the photograph was gone. Only a bright rectangle of dust remained.

In the kitchen stood my mother’s porcelain cup. Its handle was broken. Beside it lay my father’s keys.

I did not take them.

As I left the house, the door lock shut loudly. For the first time that sound did not seem like a loss.

Three months later Rachel called me.

“I canceled the wedding,” she told me.

“I heard.”

“Jake is going to therapy.”

“Good.”

“Could you listen to him?”

I was standing by the window. Ava sat on the floor and was drawing a storybook house. Mason was painting a wooden bird red.

“Maybe someday,” I said. “But right now my children need a father who is beside them.”

Rachel sighed.

“You know that they hid a great deal from me.”

“I know.”

“And you still don’t hate them.”

“There is no room left for hatred in me. I gave that room to the children too.”

In the autumn my workshop expanded. I opened a small shop by the river, where I made handmade tables, shelves, and children’s chairs. Ava had a work corner where she arranged colored papers. And every morning Mason knocked on the door and asked me whether we would make a dragon or a boat from wood that day.

On Sundays the three of us went to the other side of the city. I rented a small house there that had a real yard. During the very first week Ava sewed a red hat for the snowman. Mason announced that our new family rule would be: everyone entered the house only with the truth.

“That is a difficult rule,” I said.

“Then we’ll write it on the door in big letters,” he answered.

The first snow came at the beginning of December. The children ran around the yard, while I watched from the window. Cinnamon sticks simmered in the kitchen, an apple pie was baking in the oven, and for the first time my house did not look like a place where someone had to prove their own existence.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Me dieron una hucha de dos dólares mientras mi hermana recibía un automóvil de lujo, pero la sonrisa de mi padre desapareció

That evening I received a message from Jake.

“I want to come for Christmas. Not to ask for money. I simply want to apologize to the children.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote back:

“You can send a letter. I am not yet able to have you visit our house.”

The reply came immediately.

“I understand.”

This time the word truly meant that he understood.

The next morning Ava brought me a small paper envelope. In crooked letters it said on the front: “For Dad.”

“What is it?” I asked.

“Our new Christmas invitation.”

I opened the envelope. Inside were three figures drawn holding hands with one another. Above them was a small wooden bird with golden dots on its wings.

“Is this us?” I asked.

“Yes. You are in the middle because you always come home.”

I said nothing. I only hugged her.

That night we hung the three wooden birds on the door again. I had brought them from the old apartment, although one still had a small crack in its wing. Before, I had wanted to repair it so that everything would be as it used to be. Now I did not hide the crack.

The birds swayed in the wind, but the string held firmly.

I closed the door.

This time the house remained ours.

Missed the beginning?
