Part 4 — I Moved into the Mafia Boss’s Mansion to Save My Brother, but His Six Words Froze My Blood

He told me only this:

“Marcus knew that Daniel was alive…”

The car sped onto the rainy street.

When we arrived at the hospital, it was three o’clock at night. Two guards stood at the entrance, tension written on both their faces. The wet floor reflected the light of the lamps.

“Where is Noah?” I shouted.

Dr. Lena met me in the corridor.

“We did not take him to surgery. The duty nurse noticed in time that the documents were fake.”

“And that man?”

The doctor looked toward the glass door.

“He is on the third floor. I have not called the police yet. Grant told me to wait.”

“Why?”

Grant answered me calmly:

“Because if Marcus brought Daniel here, he is sure that you will come to him.”

“I will enter anyway.”

“I know.”

A man sat in a small room on the third floor. His hair had turned completely white, and he had an old scar on his left cheek, but I recognized his eyes at once, although in my memory they almost did not exist.

“Amy,” he said.

Only my father knew this nickname.

I stopped at the door.

“Father?”

The man nodded.

His hands were thin and wounded. Between his fingers he held an old photograph of Mother, exactly like the one that had hung in our kitchen in childhood.

“Is Noah safe?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Then Marcus did not win.”

Grant stood before him.

“Tell everything from the beginning.”

Daniel looked at Grant.

“Five years ago Marcus transferred money from your accounts and forged several orders in your name. I kept the evidence. He kidnapped me and convincingly spread that I had died in an accident. You searched for my trail, but everywhere you found false traces.”

“Who helped you escape?” Grant asked.

“No one. I was in an underground basement for three years. Then an old doctor saved me. After getting out of prison, I knew only one thing: Marcus would come for my family.”

I took a step toward him.

“Did Mother know that you were alive?”

“No. Until her death she thought that I was missing.”

That answer hurt me more than any lie.

Daniel saw my copper-colored clip.

“Is the chip still inside?”

“Grant knows about it.”

“Then he can destroy us too.”

Grant did not move.

“If I wanted to destroy you, Daniel, I would not have protected you for five years.”

“You moved your daughter into the mansion.”

“Because Marcus was already at her house.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Encontré a mi nuera viuda expulsada con su hijo y una sola maleta, pero al verme mi hermana dejó de sonreír

At that moment Grant’s phone rang. Marcus’s number appeared on the screen.

“Put it on speaker,” Daniel said.

Grant answered the call.

“Is the girl with you?” Marcus asked.

“Your games are over.”

“No. They will end only when you read the chip before everyone.”

“I already possess your evidence.”

“Then listen to yourself.”

Marcus played the recording. Grant’s voice sounded, from several days earlier.

“If the girl resists, her brother will disappear from the hospital.”

I looked at Grant.

He lowered his eyes.

“I did not say this sentence,” he said.

“It is your voice,” I said.

Daniel shook his head.

“It is an artificially assembled recording.”

Marcus laughed.

“The police will not be interested in this until you find the original.”

Grant understood immediately.

“The original is in the mansion.”

“In the wall of my room,” I said.

We began checking the recording right there. The chip and the hidden recorder confirmed each other. The voice installed by Marcus consisted of different conversations by Grant. The original files showed that Grant, on the contrary, had given the order to protect Noah.

In the morning the police arrived at the mansion.

Marcus tried to escape, but he was arrested on the road to the airport. The hospital administrator confessed everything when they played him his own recording.

Grant was not pleased.

He only sat for a long time in the empty office, where Marcus’s silver watch lay on the desk.

“Why did you not tell me that you were looking for my father?” I asked.

“Because I was afraid I would return hope to you and lose you again.”

“You still took my freedom away.”

“I know.”

It was the first answer in which he did not try to justify himself.

The hospital called me at seven in the morning. Noah’s condition was stable. Dr. Lena told me that his treatment plan would now also be financed by a state program, because the falsified documents had been confirmed in the investigation.

Grant called his own lawyer.

“Can Emily leave?” he asked.

The lawyer looked at him.

“She can. The check is canceled, but the treatment debt no longer exists.”

Grant nodded.

“Then write everything down. Today.”

“If she leaves, you will remain without your protection.”

“She was not born for my protection.”

Two days after Marcus’s arrest, the investigation sealed Grant’s old warehouse. There they found a room where Daniel had been hidden for years. Photographs hung on the walls: me, Noah, Mother. Marcus had watched us for longer than we had imagined.

!!!  Mi madre cumplía años cuando su novio volvió a irse antes del postre, pero al regresar mi hija, él palideció

Grant handed everything over to the police.

In one of the rooms he heard his own voice from the outside for the first time. The recording was from the night when he placed the check before me.

“You will not leave this house alive, Emily.”

His words sounded in the room again.

Grant buried his head in his hands.

“I thought I was giving a warning,” he said.

I stood at the door.

“Sometimes it does not matter what a person means. They hear only what you told them.”

He did not look at me.

“I know.”

Three weeks later the mansion was almost empty. The security employees left, Marcus’s room was locked, and the servants began speaking loudly to one another for the first time.

I moved my things from my room into a small apartment near the hospital. The walls were white, and from the kitchen window the same chestnut tree could be seen every day.

Daniel was undergoing rehabilitation. At first Noah did not go near him. But one time he handed him the plastic rocket cup.

“If you are my father, you must hold this,” he told him.

Daniel took the cup with both hands.

“Then I really am your father.”

Noah smiled.

It was the first day when the room began to resemble a home.

I began working in the hospital administration. In the mornings I checked patients’ documents, and in the evenings I visited Daniel. No one wanted to mention Grant’s name anymore, although a letter still came once a week.

The lawyer brought the first letter.

It contained only one sentence: If you ever need me, call me.

I did not answer.

In the second letter Grant wrote that after leaving the mansion, he had slept without a gun for the first time.

This time too I did not answer.

Noah opened the third letter.

“That man is writing to you again,” he told me.

“And what does he say?”

“He says that he is not asking you to return.”

“Then why does he write?”

Noah shrugged.

“Probably because some people learn to be silent much too late.”

On the first snow of winter, Daniel placed a small box on the kitchen table for me.

Inside lay my copper-colored hair clip. The chip had already been removed, but the clip had remained unchanged. In that object lived Mother’s hands, Father’s secret, and the years of my fear together.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine ehemalige Schwiegermutter nannte mich bei der Hochzeit ihres Sohnes einen Rest – dann zeigte meine Tochter auf die Tanzfläche und sie erbleichte

“You no longer need to wear this,” Daniel told me.

“I know.”

“Then why do you keep it?”

I placed the clip on my palm.

“Because now I know that fear too can be freed once.”

Noah was drawing with pencils in his room. When he brought me the picture, four people stood on a snowy street in it. Me, Noah, Daniel, and a tall man standing a little farther away.

“Is this Grant?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Why is he so far away?”

“Because you told him that he may not enter here.”

I looked at the drawing for a long time.

That evening Grant finally called me. His voice was tired.

“Emily, I want to speak with you only once.”

“We already spoke.”

“I know. I simply wanted to say that your brother’s treatment money is secured forever.”

“Is this gratitude or a debt?”

“Neither. It is my responsibility.”

I stood by the window. Outside, snow was falling silently on that chestnut tree.

“Then fulfill your responsibility and do not call me again.”

He was silent for a long time.

“You are right.”

“I know.”

The call ended.

I placed the copper-colored clip on the windowsill. In the morning a thin layer of snow lay on it, but for the first time I no longer wanted to fasten it in my hair.

For years I thought that survival required someone’s permission. Grant’s, my father’s, the doctor’s, any strong person’s.

But that night, when I picked up Mother’s clip in the snow, I understood that the door had been open for a long time.

I was simply afraid to walk toward it.

And for the first time I did not stop.

Missed the beginning?
