On my birthday, my husband struck me thirty times while fifty guests silently watched me and his lover smiled in front of me.
The last blow clung to my shoulders like burning iron. My breath caught, but I did not scream. Vanessa Hart stood beneath the chandelier and straightened the torn part of her silver dress with her fingers, as if her expensive fabric were more important than I was.
Adrian Cole slowly lowered the whip.
“Will you at least learn now where your place is?”
There was laughter in his voice.
At that moment I realized for the first time that this man, whom I had called my husband for eight years, was already a complete stranger to me.
My wrists were tied above my head to the decorative wooden beam of the ballroom. The rope was wrapped so tightly around me that my fingers had gone numb. A small copper bell hanging from the beam rang with every movement I made. I had brought that bell from my grandmother’s house, and since childhood it had meant the sound of peace.
That night its sound resembled the counting of torture.
“Apologize,” Adrian ordered me.
No one moved in the hall. Some guests looked at the floor, others fiddled with their glasses. My husband’s mother, Margaret Cole, stood beside the champagne pyramid and smiled with satisfaction.
“The girl came from nothing,” she said. “She should be grateful that we let her into our family.”
Vanessa tilted her head slightly.
“Elena, just say that you deliberately ruined my dress.”
Three weeks earlier I had discovered their affair. It had lasted eight months. The messages found on the phone, hotel bookings, and their photographs were already saved in a separate folder. Adrian did not know that I knew everything. Neither did Vanessa.
He considered my silence a defeat.
“I’m sorry,” I said quietly.
Vanessa’s smile widened.
Then I looked into her eyes.
“I’m sorry that you think this ends here.”
The hall fell silent.
Adrian came toward me and grabbed me by the chin.
“Do you still want to pretend to be an important person?”
“Let go of me,” I said.
“Or what?”
His breath smelled of expensive alcohol and mint. Earlier, that smell had meant returning home to me. Now it made me nauseous.
At last, one frightened employee found scissors and cut the rope. When I stood up, my knees buckled, but I put my hand against the wall and held myself up. The copper bell rang once more.
Adrian raised his glass.
“The party is over.”
“No,” I answered calmly.
I went to the table and picked up my phone. My hands were trembling, but I dialed the number correctly.
Dominic answered on the first ring.
“Elena?”
I looked at Adrian, Vanessa, Margaret, and Richard Cole. Richard had spent the whole evening boasting about their billion-dollar construction empire.
“Brother,” I said, “I want the Cole family to learn today what it means to beg for mercy.”
Silence fell over the line for several seconds.
“What did he do?”
“When you come, I’ll explain.”
At that very moment, the enormous palace gates closed. Outside, along the driveway, the headlights of black cars lit up. The smile disappeared from Adrian’s face.
I took my coat.
“You told me to learn my place.”
The sharp light of the headlights illuminated the ballroom windows. Dominic’s car stopped at the gates, while Lukas opened the rear door and held a leather folder in his hand. He came toward me, placed the folder on the table, and reached toward the lock to open it…
The folder’s lock opened beneath Lukas’s fingers, but first he looked at my bound wrists. His face was as calm as always in the courtroom, though something dangerous stood in his eyes.
“First, a doctor,” he said.
“First, the truth.”
“Elena, you’re bleeding.”
“I’ve been waiting for the truth for three weeks. Now it’s time for it.”
Dominic stood beside me. His black coat smelled of rain. Two more brothers came in behind him: Mateo locked the doors, while Niko surveyed every corner of the hall. Gabriel carefully took my phone and turned off the screen.
Adrian stepped back.
“What kind of performance is this?” he asked. “You broke into my house by force.”
“Your house?” Niko chuckled. “Interesting. Why are you so certain?”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Leave this place immediately. I’ll call security.”
Mateo looked at his watch.
“Security is already outside. They’re simply no longer on your side.”
Vanessa grabbed Adrian by the arm.
“Tell them to leave.”
“Be quiet,” he answered her for the first time.
His tone silenced Vanessa, but I saw his jaw tense. Adrian was trying to remain the same man who had been swinging the whip a few minutes earlier. Yet now five men stood before him, men whose names made bankers cancel meetings.
Dominic opened the folder.
“Elena, you didn’t say they beat you with a whip.”
“I didn’t ask who wanted to protect me. I asked whether you could get into the Coles’ financial accounts.”
Gabriel placed a small memory card on the table.
“Not just the accounts. We got into everything.”
Richard Cole, who had stood silently until then, lost color.
“This is illegal.”
“Your network of fictitious companies is illegal,” Gabriel replied. “Our investigation was only reading documents.”
Adrian shifted his gaze to me.
“You did this?”
“I only saw what you were hiding.”
“You didn’t leave the house three weeks ago because of this?”
“No. I wanted to find out whether you were only Vanessa, or whether there was something else too.”
His lips froze.
Lukas took several sheets of paper from the folder.
“Here are the loans signed by you that disappeared from your wife’s family fund. Here are transfers in Vanessa’s name. And here is a recording in which you tell an employee that Elena will never find out because ‘she is only a quiet wife.’”
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is impossible.”
Niko turned on the phone. Adrian’s voice rang through the hall.
“Elena can do nothing. Her brothers are only noisy names. The money has already been transferred.”
The voice of my own husband returned from the walls. Something broke inside my heart, but this time the pain gave me strength.
Adrian came toward me.
“This recording has been taken out of context.”
“Then let’s hear the context too,” Niko said.
A recording from a hotel corridor appeared on the hall screen. I and Vanessa were not there. Adrian could be seen handing a black bag to an unknown man and telling him that the money was from “Moretti’s account.”
Margaret sank into an armchair.
“Richard, what have you done?”
Richard looked at his son.
“You told me everything was under control.”
Adrian clenched his teeth.
“Elena, if you stop all this now, I’ll return the money to you.”
“This is not my money,” I said. “This is the money of the people to whom you promised homes with your construction projects and left empty foundations.”
Dominic’s phone rang. He listened, then turned toward me.
“The conversation with the police is over. But one problem remains.”
“What problem?”
Dominic placed the phone on the table.
“Apparently Adrian has already taken the final step. A document sent in your name was registered this morning…”
And when Lukas turned the screen toward me, my signature was visible there—on a document I had never signed in my life…
My name was written on the screen. Below it, the signature almost exactly repeated mine, but it had a small, strange angle in the letter “m.” Only Gabriel and I knew about that angle, because after breaking my arm in childhood I learned to write differently.
“This is forged,” I said.
“That is exactly why you must open this envelope,” Gabriel said.
He took a sealed envelope from the folder’s inner pocket. My full name and a date three weeks earlier were written on it. The day when I discovered Adrian and Vanessa’s affair.
Adrian took a step forward.
“Don’t open it.”
For the first time, his voice did not sound like an order. It held fear.
“Why?” I asked. “Is there more of my nonexistent nonsense inside?”
“Elena, listen to me. You don’t know what you’ll do.”
Lukas placed the sealed envelope on the table.
“Permission to open it must be given by Elena herself.”
“I give it,” I said.
The tip of his knife cut the paper. Inside lay three documents and a small voice recorder. Gabriel turned on the device.
At the very first voice, Adrian lowered his head.
“The money transferred to Cole’s company from the Moretti fund does not belong to it,” Gabriel’s voice said in the recording. “The money was stolen.”
Then my voice was heard.
“If you are hearing this, it means Adrian has already begun putting pressure on me. I did not run away because I still needed proof that he had not taken money only from my family.”
Vanessa covered her mouth with her hand.
Richard whispered:
“She knew.”
In the recording I was speaking again.
“Twenty years ago, when my father died, the controlling share of the Moretti International Foundation passed into my name. I was not a poor girl whom the Cole family sheltered. I was the owner whose trust Adrian used.”
It seemed as if the air disappeared from the hall.
Adrian raised his head.
“This is impossible. You told me the foundation was only a charitable organization.”
“You believed that because you wanted to believe it.”
Lukas raised the second document.
“This morning the foundation redeemed all the outstanding debts of Cole’s construction group. Then it froze the controlling block of shares. You are no longer the director, Adrian.”
Margaret jumped up.
“Have we lost our house?”
“Not yet,” Gabriel replied. “But the bank has already demanded that the property be frozen.”
Adrian came to me and lowered his voice.
“Elena, we are husband and wife. You cannot take all this from me like this.”
“You could not take from me what never belonged to you.”
“I loved you.”
“Love does not tie a person to the ceiling.”
Niko stopped the recording. Everyone was looking at me. The years in which I had presented myself as a quiet, grateful wife collapsed in one moment.
Suddenly Lukas’s phone rang. He listened and his expression changed.
“Elena, the police are on their way. But Adrian has already sent another file.”
“Where?”
“To the prosecutor’s office. It says that you are the organizer of the entire fraud.”
Adrian smiled for the first time.
“While you are celebrating the truth here, everyone outside will think this was your plan.”
Dominic looked toward the window. Red and blue flashing lights appeared in the distance.
And I looked at the voice recorder and realized that the hardest battle was only beginning…
