Part 4 — My Sister Ruined the Wedding Photos with My Wheelchair and Sent Me to the Back Corner, but Jamal Stopped Smiling After a Few Minutes

…and that was when I understood why my father had a bag prepared for leaving.

Levan showed me the picture received on his phone. The document was a rental agreement for a truck. The signer was my father. The date was three days before the accident.

My breath caught.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

“We do not know exactly yet,” Levan replied. “But the truck driver has already confirmed that he knew your route.”

Noise broke out in the hall again.

My father looked toward the door.

“I would not have called anyone.”

“You rented the truck,” I said.

“To transport money.”

“Three days before my accident?”

He had no answer.

Levan signaled to the head of security.

“Lock the exits. The police are on their way.”

My father suddenly took a phone from his pocket and tapped the screen several times.

“I am calling my lawyer.”

“You have already called him,” Levan said. “And he told you that he no longer represents you.”

My father’s hand stopped.

“What are you saying?”

“He said that you hid information from him and were planning to flee this evening.”

My mother sank into a chair. The wedding ring on her fingers glittered; a few hours earlier it had been something to be proud of in front of everyone. Now it hung on her finger like a heavy lock.

Brittany looked at Jamal.

“Where were you going?”

“Nowhere.”

“They found your bag in the car.”

“I was only going to return the money.”

“Which money?”

For the first time Jamal saw that the woman standing before him was no longer a bride in love. Before him stood a woman who needed an answer.

“The money that your family was supposed to cover.”

Brittany closed her eyes.

“You knew the money was stolen.”

Jamal said nothing.

That silence turned out to be clearer than an answer.

The police arrived in fifteen minutes. They put handcuffs on my father while the guests were still standing in the hall. My mother did not resist, but kept repeating that she had done everything for the family.

“Nino, tell them that I am your mother.”

!!!  A gazdám egy régi matracot dobott elém negyvenkét év szolgálat után, de amikor felhasítottam, elsápadt

“I know,” I said.

“Then help me.”

“I helped you my whole life.”

Anger and hurt alternated in her eyes.

“Is this how you thank me for raising you?”

“Motherhood is not a debt that you pay me with a credit card during illness.”

That was the last thing I said to her that night.

Jamal was arrested later for financial fraud and using stolen money. Brittany spoke to the police in exchange for cooperation. She said that she knew only about the money needed for the wedding and had no idea of the true source of the loans.

I did not start defending her.

But I did not want her destruction either.

The next day, at the department, they played my father the recording. He sat in a small room, his hands on the table, wearing headphones.

He heard his own voice in the recording.

“In the end, she always pays.”

My father lowered his eyes.

Then my mother’s voice sounded:

“Do it quickly, before she hears anything from the hospital.”

My father removed the headphones.

“This was taken out of context.”

The investigator replied:

“You created the context yourselves.”

My father sat silently for a long time.

“I only wanted to save everything.”

“Whom were you trying to save?” I asked.

For the first time, he could not look at me.

“Your sister.”

“No. You were protecting Jamal’s lies, and Brittany sold my life because of them.”

My father ran his hand over his face.

“You were always the strongest.”

“That is why you decided I could be used.”

Again, he had no answer.

In the following weeks, the banks canceled the loan on my apartment. The credit accounts were closed. The court stopped the sale of my property. The professional board officially confirmed that my father’s statement against me was unfounded.

They could not take my career away.

But the most difficult moment came at a completely different time.

In the apartment I had returned to, I opened my bedroom door and saw an empty shelf. A family photograph had stood there before, in which all four of us were laughing. Now only a small trace of dust remained.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Acepté cuidar a un jefe herido cuando todos huyeron, pero al decirle que no, su expresión cambió por completo

The yellow plastic fastener, however, lay on the table.

I took it out of the folder and held it in my hand. Its corner was still cracked. That object did not give me my whole family back. But it left me the truth when everything else disappeared.

Three months later, I moved to another city.

I rented a small apartment whose window looked out on tram lines in the mornings. Four days a week I conducted financial checks for hospitals and small companies. On the fifth day I taught new employees how to recognize forged documents.

In the first weeks, I checked twice that the door was locked.

Then only once.

I no longer needed the brace on my leg, but I still used a cane when walking for a long time. I no longer hid it. If people were interested, I told them that recovery needed time.

One evening I spoke by video call with my little nephew, Luka. He was Brittany’s son. By then Brittany was living separately and trying to start working.

“Aunt Nino, where do you work now?” Luka asked.

“I help people so that numbers do not deceive them.”

He brought a sheet of paper to the camera. He had drawn a small house, and in front of it stood a woman with a yellow cane.

“That is you,” he told me. “You protect the house.”

A lump caught in my throat.

“It is a very beautiful drawing.”

“Will you come to us again?”

Outside the window, the first snow was beginning.

“If your mother invites me and if you are there too.”

“I will always be there.”

That answer comforted me more than any court decision.

Several weeks later, my mother sent me a letter. This time it was short.

“Nino, the trial will be soon. Father needs help. Can you speak to the lawyer? We are still family.”

I did not write a reply for a long time.

Then I sent only this:

“You already have a lawyer. I am no longer your solution.”

She called me immediately.

I did not answer.

She called once more the next day.

Not then either.

I was no longer punishing them. I simply no longer opened the door behind which they were always waiting for me with my guilt.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Tatăl meu m-a numit impostor la propria lui aniversare, dar când generalul a intrat, zâmbetul lui a dispărut

My father was ultimately sentenced to prison for forgery and fraud. My mother confessed and received a sentence by agreement. Jamal could not cover the list of debts, and Brittany canceled the wedding.

Brittany came to my new apartment once in person.

She stood on the stairs, holding a small frame with an old photograph.

“May I come in?” she asked.

I looked at her for a long time.

“Not today.”

“Ever?”

“Maybe. But not to bring back the old life.”

She nodded.

“You were right.”

“I know.”

That word sounded neither like victory nor revenge. It was simply the truth.

Brittany placed the frame by the door and left.

I did not pick up the photograph.

Instead, in the evening I placed the yellow plastic fastener on the table. Beside it I attached Luka’s drawing. The room was silent, but this silence no longer resembled the old apartment.

I went to the window.

Snow was slowly falling in the streetlights. The yellow fastener lay on the table and reflected the light.

That night, for the first time, I did not wait to see whether anyone would write to me.

The phone remained silent.

And I was free.

Missed the beginning?
