Part 4 — When My Husband Gave His Lover the Code to My House, One Call from Her Changed Everything and Erased James’s Smile

Two investigators got out of the police car, and James tried to run for the first time.

“Rebecca, give me the car keys,” he said.

“Why?”

“I have to leave here.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere where we can sort all this out.”

His voice was still convincing, but his hands were trembling.

I took a step back.

“From now on, I will no longer sort out your problems.”

The police officers stopped by the stairs.

“James Hale?” one of them asked.

James fell silent.

“I am James Montgomery.”

“They know you by both names,” the investigator replied. “And we have warrants under both names.”

Amber stood against the wall with her hands over her face. A few hours earlier she had been only my husband’s lover to me. Now I knew that she was the one who had sent me the first message, the one who had recorded James’s conversation, and the one who had enough conscience to stop at the last moment.

James looked at Olivia.

“You were my lawyer.”

“No,” Olivia answered. “I am Rebecca’s lawyer.”

“Then find me another one.”

“I already called. He refused.”

“Who?”

“Three lawyers. They said they had a conflict of interest.”

“Everyone has a price!” James shouted.

“Maybe,” I said. “But not everyone wants to take your case.”

The investigator put handcuffs on him. James did not resist, but still carried himself as if he were the strongest person in the room.

“Rebecca, this is a mistake,” he told me.

“You used that word for too long.”

“I loved you.”

“You loved the life that existed in my name.”

“I did everything for you.”

“No. You did everything for yourself and hid behind my name.”

The next day, at eight in the morning, James heard his own voice in my firm’s old conference room.

A long wooden table stood in the room, and a large photograph of his and my wedding hung on the wall. James sat with lawyers. I was beside Olivia, while Daniel checked the audio-recording device.

!!!  Me dejaron afuera de mi propia casa con mi bebé recién nacida, pero una llamada hizo que mi esposo dejara de sonreír

The recording began.

“Rebecca will never find out.”

James raised his head.

“That is a stolen recording.”

“It is your voice,” Daniel said.

“It could be edited.”

His second sentence sounded in the recording.

“If she does, I will tell her she has clinical exhaustion.”

James pressed his fingers against the table.

“That is taken out of context.”

I watched him hear his own words from outside for the first time. His voice seemed much smaller in the room than in my memory. It was as if that man sat before him and he himself did not recognize him.

The recording continued.

“I will start guardianship proceedings and temporarily control her share in the firm as well.”

No one in the room moved.

James said to me:

“I did not mean this.”

“But you said it.”

“I was angry.”

“You planned it for six months.”

“You are not sick,” he told me, as if all of this were my fault. “You simply became too jealous.”

Olivia placed the medical records on the table.

“Forgery of a license, misleading patients, misappropriation of funds, financial fraud, and forged documents to begin guardianship proceedings. This is no longer a matter of jealousy.”

That week the court protected my property and froze the accounts. All assets in James’s name came under investigation. The bank took Amber’s red sports car because it had been bought with money James transferred from my accounts.

Amber came to court as a witness.

She admitted that at first she had been with him for money. Then she learned that James deceived women and hospital patients in the same way.

“Why did you help me?” I asked her in the hallway.

Amber did not look toward me.

“Because one day I realized that every person beside him was either a victim or a future victim.”

“Including you?”

“Especially me.”

James was finally charged. By court decision, my house, share in the firm, and family fund remained with me. Of the money the patients’ families had lost, some was recovered, and some would never return.

!!!  Soacra mea m-a umilit în noaptea numirii la comandă, iar când ușa s-a zguduit, soțul meu a încetat să zâmbească

I could not erase every consequence.

I could not save every person.

But there was no longer any place in my life for his lies.

Taking his things out of the house was the hardest part.

His closet was almost empty. Only a surgical watch remained on the shelf — silver, with thin hands and the letters “D.M.” engraved on the back.

Daniel Montgomery’s watch.

James had taken it from someone else’s life.

I put the watch in a box and handed it to the police.

In the other room I found his photograph. It was a picture from our wedding, with a broken corner on the frame. James was smiling, and I had my hand on his shoulder.

I took the photograph off the wall.

The room became larger.

Three months later I moved my office to a new location in Manhattan. It was smaller, but the river was visible from the window. In the morning I made my own coffee, and kept Daniel’s peppermint candies in a small glass jar in the hallway.

Our firm created a free legal-aid program for patients’ families. We did not call it advertising. We simply kept the doors open every Tuesday evening.

Olivia often told me:

“You still work too much.”

“At least now I know what for.”

The first snow came to Greenwich at the end of November. The pool was already covered, and a white protective cover had been stretched across the water’s surface. I was standing alone in the house when there was a knock at the door.

It was a letter from James.

No, from James Hale.

“Rebecca, I made mistakes. If you come even once, I will explain everything to you. I can still become the man you thought I was.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I forwarded it to Olivia.

“Should I answer?” she asked.

“I already answered.”

“What did you tell him?”

“Nothing.”

It was my calmest refusal.

Weeks passed.

One morning a little girl named Lily left me her drawing in the firm’s waiting room. That day she was supposed to come with her mother as a plaintiff. The drawing showed a house, a pool, and a large sun. Two people stood beside the house, but there was no high fence between them.

!!!  When the baby was born, the husband left the hospital, and one sentence from the nanny made him lose all color when he returned home

“Is this you?” I asked.

“Yes,” Lily told me. “No one lies to you here anymore.”

The child’s words outweighed any court decision.

That evening I returned home and took a small object from the safe — the dark violet protective strip that had remained from the laboratory specimen package. I had kept it in the drawer of my desk all this time.

At first it had been connected with fear.

Now it meant truth.

I put the strip in my diary, on the page where it said: “I am not obliged to save from someone else’s lie a person who chose that lie himself.”

Then I opened the window.

It was snowing outside.

White flakes fell on the pool cover, and everything looked clean, peaceful, and final.

James knew the code to my house.

But the door was no longer his.

Nor was my life.

Missed the beginning?
