Part 4 — My husband left our house with gifts, but when he returned, he found only a yellow envelope and his face immediately changed

That night I did not stay alone at home.

The investigator left two officers, while Evelyn decided to take Noah to her sister’s house. The boy stopped at the door and handed me the small copper compass.

“Mom, are you coming too?”

“In a little while. I have one thing to finish first.”

“Will you look at the north again?”

“Yes.”

He nodded, as if the answer were enough.

As soon as the car drove away, Daniel called twenty-one times.

I did not answer the first call.

Nor the second.

On the third, I received a message from his lawyer: if I did not return the house, the company, or the accounts, Daniel would apply to the court for custody.

Evelyn read the letter and smiled calmly.

“He still thinks a threat is control.”

“Can you stop him?”

“You have already stopped him. Now we are simply documenting it.”

At eleven at night Daniel’s lawyer called personally. His voice was no longer confident.

“Ms. Hart, perhaps both sides could settle this matter calmly?”

“Your client forged documents in the name of my client.”

“That has not yet been proven.”

“We have the video recording, the bank trail, and his own voice.”

He was silent for a long time.

“Daniel wants negotiations to take place.”

“I do not negotiate over my freedom.”

“Then the case will be painful for everyone.”

“The case begun by your client is already painful.”

Evelyn ended the call.

In the morning the investigators sealed Daniel’s office. Vanessa’s brother was found at his home and arrested. Marcus Vale was found hiding near the airport. Vanessa herself went to the investigator.

She asked to meet me.

“It is not necessary for you to meet her,” Evelyn told me.

“I want to know why she called me Mother.”

The meeting took place in a small investigation room. A plastic cup of water stood on the table, which Vanessa held with both hands as if she were trying to warm herself.

!!!  Soțul meu m-a alungat în ploaie după trei ani fără copii, dar când vecinul singuratic a făcut oferta, mama lui a amuțit

“Did you know my father?” I asked.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“My father worked as an accountant in that company. Your father discovered that Marcus was stealing state money. Daniel worked with him then.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“At that time he only suspected it. But your father wanted to go to the police. Marcus stopped everything.”

“How?”

Vanessa gripped the cup more tightly with her fingers.

“He told your father that if he revealed the truth, he would destroy your life. I was twenty years old at the time. Daniel came to me and said that he could help us.”

“Help us?”

“He deceived us. Your father kept silent, and Daniel took control of part of the company. Years later he used the same plan against you.”

“Why were you with him?”

Vanessa looked at me for the first time.

“At first I wanted revenge. Then money, power, and fear changed everything. But when I learned that he was planning to have you imprisoned in your own name, I realized that I would be next.”

“Is that why you called me Mother?”

“Your father always said that your family would survive if someone finally dared to tell the truth. You were not only his wife to him. You were his greatest mistake and the only person he was afraid of.”

I no longer knew whether I should hate or pity this woman. Because of her my marriage had collapsed, but she too had ended up in the same trap that Daniel had been building for years.

“I do not forgive you,” I told her.

“I know.”

“But I will still use your testimony.”

“That is exactly why I came.”

That same day Daniel’s words were heard in the official room.

In the recording he said: “Claire is so busy with the child that she will not notice anything.”

When the voice came from the speaker, Daniel was sitting at the table. For the first time he heard his own words from the outside.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi hija acusó a su hermano y lo expulsamos de casa; años después, su llegada al hospital hizo que mi marido palideciera

His face slowly turned pale.

“I did not mean it that way,” he said.

The investigator answered:

“But that is what you said.”

“I only…”

“Is that your voice?”

Daniel could not answer.

“Mr. Reed, the question is simple.”

He lowered his head.

“Yes. It is my voice.”

At that moment I realized for the first time that his defeat had not happened through my shouting. He simply had to remain alone with his own lies.

Within several weeks the company went into temporary administration. My share was returned to me. Daniel was charged with fraud, forgery of documents, and assisting in the appropriation of state funds. Vanessa’s brother confessed to the crime. Marcus Vale was awaiting trial.

I did not attend every day of the proceedings.

Sometimes I picked Noah up from school.

Sometimes I stayed late at the new office and signed, in my own name, documents that no one could use against me anymore.

One evening Noah drew a house on a sheet of paper. In front of it stood three small figures: me, him, and a copper-colored circle above them.

“What is this?” I asked.

“The compass. So we know where our home is.”

“Home is not the place of a building,” I said.

“I know. It is where you are not afraid.”

These words affected me more strongly than all the court verdicts.

Three months later we moved to another city. We rented a small apartment with wide windows. In the morning I took Noah to school, and in the afternoon I met clients of my new financial consulting business.

When I returned home, I brewed tea and checked Noah’s homework. His drawing hung on the wall. The first snow could be seen through the kitchen window.

Daniel wrote to me for the first time that day.

“Claire, I know I destroyed everything. I want only five minutes. For Noah.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich folgte meiner Haushälterin wegen 28 Dollar bis vor ihre Wohnungstür, doch als sie den Umschlag öffnete, erstarrte mein Anwalt

Before, every word of his determined my daily mood. Now it was simply text on a screen.

Evelyn told me that an answer was not necessary.

But I wrote to him:

“Noah will meet you only in the presence of a specialist and if he wishes. I will not return to your life.”

The answer came immediately.

“You are still my wife.”

“No,” I wrote. “I am the woman you lost when you were certain she would never leave.”

Then I blocked the number.

In the evening Noah took the compass from his bag and put it on the table.

“It still works,” he said.

I ran my hand over the object. The copper had worn slightly, but the tip of the needle was still looking exactly north.

Outside, snow was falling silently over the city.

This time we were not running away.

We were going home.

Missed the beginning?
