Part 4 — On Thanksgiving Day, My Brother’s Girlfriend Slapped My Child, and by Christmas Her Smile Suddenly Began to Disappear

After Father’s words, I could no longer enter the house.

I stopped in the hallway and saw only the small golden piece of the star in his hand.

“What didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

Father looked at Mother.

Mother lowered her eyes.

“One week before Noah’s death, he left a letter for you,” Father said. “We did not give it to Tessa. Somehow she found a copy of it.”

My knees gave way.

Noah’s letter was a sacred object to me. It contained only a few sentences because he could already barely write. He reminded me never to hide the truth from Elisi and that the child should know: a father’s love does not disappear with death.

“How did Tessa have it?”

“She found it on Ryan’s old computer,” Mother said. “Ryan once saved it there because he also had a copy of your letter.”

Ryan called me immediately.

“Camilla, I swear, I did not give it to Tessa.”

“But she found it in your house.”

“I know. And I cannot forgive myself for this.”

For the first time there was no self-justification in his voice. Only heaviness.

“We are going to the lawyer tomorrow,” I told him. “You will come too and tell everything.”

“I will come.”

“And you will no longer try to save Tessa.”

A long pause fell.

“Never again,” he said.

The next morning four of us sat in the lawyer’s office. On the table lay the urgent-care certificate, the doctor’s letter, the camera recording, printed pages of Tessa’s messages, and the golden piece saved by Father.

Tessa did not come.

Her lawyer appeared instead. He looked through the documents and his expression changed.

“I will no longer participate in this case,” he said.

Tessa, who was connected by video call, shouted:

“You do not have the right to do this!”

“I do when a client sends me contradictory lies and threatens that if I leave, she will harm my family too.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Después del nacimiento de mi bebé, me escondí bajo la cama y la enfermera que entró dejó de sonreír

Tessa’s face froze on the screen.

“I did not threaten anyone.”

The lawyer played the recording.

Tessa’s own voice was heard: “If Ryan does not come back today, I will tell everyone that he abandoned the child’s mother and stole money.”

Tessa watched her own words on the screen.

First she tried to laugh.

Then she shook her head.

Finally she fell silent.

It was the moment when a person hears their own voice through someone else’s ears for the first time. From her face I understood that for Tessa the hardest thing was neither the recording nor the lost engagement. The hardest thing was that this time she could no longer say: “I didn’t say that.”

The lawyer coldly explained that a complaint would be filed because of violence against a child and threats, and that she could approach us only through official procedure.

Tessa placed her hand on the screen.

“Camilla, please, don’t do this.”

I answered calmly:

“I am not doing anything to you. I am simply no longer protecting you from the consequences of your own decisions.”

That same evening the police went to Tessa’s home. I was not there. I did not want to watch her fear. I wanted only my child’s peace.

Ryan returned the ring he had bought for Tessa.

“This does not belong to you,” I said.

“I know. I just want there to be nothing left that takes us back to that day.”

I gave the ring back.

“Then sell it and use the money for Elisi’s therapy.”

He nodded.

Several days later I entered Father’s living room. The crystal angel intended for Tessa lay in a box. On the table stood a glass left after Christmas, with a faint lipstick mark still visible.

It was physical proof that she no longer existed in that room. No place, no ring, no expectation.

Most of all I remembered the empty space under the Christmas tree. Where Tessa’s gift should have stood, there was only Elisi’s drawing. Four people were in the drawing: me, Elisi, Grandpa, and Grandma. Noah was above, beside the star, with a small golden heart.

Three weeks later Elisi was drawing again.

For the first time she attached a drawing to the refrigerator of her own free will.

“Mom, is it allowed now?”

“It was always allowed.”

She looked at me.

“Then why did I think it wasn’t allowed?”

The answer to that question remained in my heart like a cold stone.

“Because one grown-up transferred her anger onto you. But it was never your fault.”

Elisi nodded and drew one more sun on the paper.

Two months later we moved to another neighborhood. It was a small apartment, but in the morning the river could be seen from the window. I began working at a library, and every evening I read at the same small table while Elisi arranged pencils by color.

The mark on her cheek was almost no longer visible.

But when someone knocked on the door, she still looked toward me first.

One morning the first snow came. Elisi put on her mittens and went outside into the yard. She made a small star from snow, although one of its points had collapsed.

“Can this also be beautiful?” she asked.

“That is exactly why it is beautiful.”

That same week Ryan sent me his last letter.

“I know that I will not return to Tessa. I know that I have lost your trust. If you ever think that I can simply be an uncle to Elisi, I will be ready. If not, I will accept that too.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Ryan was not guilty of the slap, but he was guilty of the silence that allowed Tessa to feel safe. I no longer wanted to punish him. I simply no longer wanted to take his fixing upon myself.

I replied:

“You can be in Elisi’s life only when you respect her boundaries. We need time first. This is not a rejection. This is protection.”

He sent me only one word:

!!!  I helped an injured man in an abandoned building, but after my six words, the smile disappeared from his face

“I understand.”

That evening I entered Elisi’s room. A new star hung by the window. This time it was made of white paper, with golden strips along the edges.

The old star lay beside it, repaired, cracked, but whole.

Elisi looked at me.

“Should we keep the old one?”

I took the golden piece and attached it to the center of the star.

“Yes,” I told her. “It knows how far we have come.”

Outside, snow quietly fell against the glass. In the house, for the first time in a long while, no one was afraid anymore.

The old star slowly turned by the window.

Light came out through the cracks.

Missed the beginning?
