Part 4 — I brought the mafia boss’s son to his house at night, but when he saw the object clutched in the boy’s hand, the color drained from his face

At John’s last words, all the doors of the house locked at the same time.

In the darkness, only the red embers of the fireplace gave light.

Noah clung to my leg.

“Mom, what is happening?”

“Nothing, my dear. You are with me.”

My voice sounded calm, but my knees were trembling. John knelt before Noah.

“Little man, you have to be quiet now. Can you?”

Noah pressed his lips together.

“If you protect Mom, I can.”

John’s gaze reached me.

“He is better than I am.”

A metallic sound came from outside. Someone violently shook the main door.

John signaled the guards to move us into the rear corridor. Mrs. Harper opened a door hidden in the wall. Behind it was a narrow passage smelling of dust and old wood.

“How many secrets does this house hide?” I asked.

“More than it should,” John replied.

Calls came one after another on his phone. First the lawyer, then the head of security, and finally his brother Edward.

John answered the third call.

“The boy is with me,” Edward said. “Do you know how expensive losing him will be for you?”

“You burned the car.”

“Your car. I have not yet earned your death.”

“Olivia and Noah are not involved in this.”

“They are at the center of this matter. The child changes everything.”

John recorded the voice so Edward could not see him. I realized only then that a small red mark had lit up on the phone screen.

“What do you want?” John asked.

“Signed documents by six in the morning. Control of the company. Otherwise the woman and child will never leave the city.”

“First you have to get to me.”

“I am already in your house.”

The call ended.

John squeezed the phone in his hand so hard that the veins bulged on his fist.

“Call the lawyer,” I said.

“My lawyer obeys Edward.”

“Then call someone else.”

He looked at me.

“Whom?”

“Someone who cares about the truth, not money.”

John smiled at me for the first time. Very faintly.

“Such people are rare.”

“But they exist.”

I remembered something I had noticed during three weeks of work: on the second floor of the house, beside the map hanging on the library wall, a small green light was always on. Mrs. Harper checked it every evening. Once she told me it was only an old security system.

Now we went there.

We found a recorder hidden behind the map. Edward’s voice had been recorded on it for years, because John suspected that his brother was betraying his people.

John turned on the recording.

In the silence Edward’s voice sounded:

“Tell the girl that John abandoned her. If the child is born, change the hospital record. This boy must never be found in the Walker family.”

My legs gave way.

Then I heard my own voice in the next recording. It was five years old and full of trembling.

“John, if you ever hear this, Noah is your son. I am not asking you for money. Just tell me once that the choice was yours, and not that you disappeared.”

My breathing stopped.

I had never written this letter, but the voice was mine.

Edward had made me record it secretly when I was sitting alone in the clinic corridor. Then he took my phone. I thought the recording had been deleted.

John lowered his head.

“You heard all of this yourself.”

“For the first time now.”

“Then it is time for the truth to work for us for the first time too.”

It was five in the morning when John’s independent lawyer, Marina Kapanadze, came to the house. She held a court order, and two investigators followed her.

Edward was brought out of the library.

His jacket was torn, but a smile was still written on his face.

“John, are you really doing this against your own family?” he asked.

John put the recorder on the table.

“Family is what you call the person you do not destroy.”

Edward’s smile disappeared.

The investigator turned on the recording. His own voice sounded in the room again.

“Tell the girl that John abandoned her…”

Edward froze.

He looked toward me.

“You know nothing about this man. One day he will abandon you too.”

For the first time I was no longer afraid of him.

“Maybe. But this time I will make the choice.”

Edward was taken away.

John stood by the window. It was slowly becoming light over the city.

“Is everything over now?” I asked.

“No. The consequences are only beginning.”

After that, everything happened quickly.

John transferred temporary control of the companies to an independent manager. He refused to settle the matter quietly with money. Three people who knew about changing my address and chose silence were dismissed from his office.

His lawyer spoke with me separately.

“You are not obliged to stay with him,” Marina told me.

“I know.”

“Nor does recognizing him as the child’s father mean that you must forgive him anything.”

“I know that too.”

John heard everything and, for the first time, did not resist.

That same evening he came to me while Noah was asleep.

“I don’t know how to repair five years,” he said.

“You can’t repair them.”

“I know.”

“But you can stop lying.”

“I won’t lie anymore.”

“And if Noah wants to be with you?”

“I will wait. I will not take away his choice.”

It was the first promise that did not sound like an order.

A week later, the former head of security went to the courtroom and officially handed the investigators a copy of the recording. The case against Edward grew: blackmail, forgery of documents, organizing an attack, and bribing people.

I did not wait for his punishment the way people wait for revenge.

I simply wanted his shadow to no longer exist in my life.

John later heard his own words.

The lawyer played the hearing recording. There he said: “If the woman and child are not here, I will lose everything.”

John stood in the corner of the room for a long time.

“Did I speak like that?” he asked.

“Yes,” I answered.

“It sounds as if I considered them property, not people.”

“Because for years the people around you spoke to you exactly that way.”

“But it was my voice.”

“That is why you can change it.”

He nodded.

In a few days Noah and I left the house.

John did not stop us.

Almost nothing remained in my room. The bed was empty. On the wardrobe door hung only one small drawing—three people drawn by Noah: himself, me, and John. Everyone held a yellow sun in their hands.

I found the copper-colored wooden whale under the pillow.

John had not taken it.

Or perhaps he knew that this object was more precious to us than to him.

Three months later I rented a small apartment in the northern part of the city. In the morning I worked at a library, and in the evening I helped the neighboring woman care for children. For the first time in my life I no longer had to fear losing my job, because at my door stood not armed guards but an ordinary neighbor.

Noah went to kindergarten.

One morning, when snow fell for the first time, he called me to the window.

“Mom, will we see John today?”

“If you want.”

“I do. But you should be alone too.”

His words stayed in my heart.

John came every week. In the first days Noah asked him questions: why he had so many cars, why he did not laugh often, and why grown men were afraid of him.

John answered every question.

Once Noah told him:

“If you are my father, then you must keep my drawings.”

John answered:

“All of them.”

And he kept them.

He sold his old mansion. He gave part of it to a children’s clinic, and with the other part bought a small lakeside house on Lake Michigan. There were no guards in the corners there, no silent rooms, and no doors that hid the truth from others.

John and I did not get back together at first.

First we learned how to be parents without Noah becoming trapped between our old pain.

Six months later, one evening, a message came to my phone from an unknown number.

“Olivia, I know that I lost very much. But now everything has changed. I want us to be a family again.”

Without John’s name, I knew who it was from.

He sent a second message too.

“Answer me, please.”

I held the phone in my hand for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“Family is no longer a place where one person waits for another. We have already built ours. If you want, you may enter it as a guest. But we will not return to our old life.”

The answer did not come immediately.

Only an hour later did the short words appear:

“I understand.”

This time his answer really meant what he was saying.

That night Noah sat on the floor in the living room and colored a drawing. Outside the window, snow was quietly falling over the city.

I placed the copper-colored wooden whale on the shelf. For years it had reminded me of the lost father, the deceived letter, and the man who had never returned.

Now it meant only one thing.

We survived.

Noah came to me and touched the whale.

“Mom, is this for John too?”

“No,” I said. “This is our beginning.”

Outside, the snow covered the entire street.

The small wooden whale stood on the shelf and, for the first time, no longer waited for anyone.

Missed the beginning?
