Part 4 — They Broke Both of My Wife’s Legs and Everyone Called It an Accident, but My Question Made Her Relative’s Smile Disappear

…That same night, instead of returning home, I went directly to the federal investigative service.

Rain struck the car window like fine sand.

I read the message I had received from Laura to the female investigator.

“The mention of the children is not accidental,” she said. “We will find the author of the threat in the morning, but tonight all addresses must be protected.”

I called Mariana.

“Do not open the door to anyone. If you need anything, go to the neighbor.”

“Where are you?”

“Where the truth is protected.”

“Daniel, will Valeria survive?”

“She will survive.”

I still did not know that, but I needed to believe it.

At half past eleven the lawyer called me. For the first time I heard fear in his voice.

“Joaquin asked me to withdraw from the case.”

“And what did you answer?”

“I told him that I was no longer his lawyer.”

“Why?”

“Because today I saw with my own eyes how he tried to destroy evidence.”

It soon became clear that the threat sent from the unknown number belonged to Joaquin’s adviser, Raul Mendoza. He was the representative of one of the financiers of the new logistics park. The money transfers were connected precisely with his accounts.

At four in the morning the investigators sealed his office.

Joaquin still tried to regain control.

He called several city newspapers and said that I was acting out of personal revenge. Then he accused Valeria of supposedly stealing the company’s confidential information.

But it was already too late.

The recording was secured.

The original version of the report was secured.

The threat audio too.

In the small hospital conference room, Ivan heard his own voice for the first time.

The lawyer turned on the recording.

“Give me the computer.”

“First tell me whose account the money goes to.”

Then his voice was heard: “Father, she saw everything.”

Ivan sat motionless.

In the video his hand could be seen holding Valeria’s arm. His voice was heard again:

“Daniel is far away.”

On the screen Ivan looked at himself.

“I did not say it like that,” he said quietly.

“You said it yourself,” the investigator answered.

!!!  I drove my pregnant wife out of the house, and four years later I found her in a free-food line and froze at the sight of an unknown lawyer

“I was only frightening her.”

“Are you listening to the meaning of your own words for the first time now?”

Ivan lowered his eyes.

Joaquin, however, was no longer looking at the screen. He stood by the window and turned a thin, opened pen in his hand.

“This recording was obtained illegally,” he said.

“The owner of the vehicle handed it over voluntarily,” the investigator answered.

“You are arranging political persecution.”

“And you wrote an altered report.”

That day both of them were arrested. An investigation also began against Raul Mendoza. Robledo, who had altered the report, testified under an agreement. His sentence was reduced, but he lost his job and left the city.

I felt no joy from this story.

Only exhaustion.

In Valeria’s room her belongings were arranged in a small cardboard box. The phone, keys, one white scarf, and the empty cover of the brown folder that Ivan had left at the site.

I looked at the copper bookmark the longest.

The small bridge engraved on its surface had become covered with scratches. Valeria had given it to me on the first anniversary of our marriage.

“A way can always be found,” she told me then.

Now there was an empty chair in her room.

The flowers by the window were withering.

Valeria returned home six weeks later. At first she sat in an armchair, then leaned on a special cane. The doctors told us that walking would take months, but she still got up every morning.

One morning I saw seven-year-old Nicola in the kitchen. He was sitting at the table and drawing something with colored pencils.

“What is this?” I asked.

“A bridge.”

“Where does it go?”

“From here to there.”

“And who crosses?”

He turned the sheet over. On one side Mother was sitting in an armchair, and on the other I was standing. In the middle there was a bridge.

“Us,” he said. “Mother walks slowly, so the bridge must be wide.”

Valeria smiled quietly.

I lowered my head so that the child would not see my tears.

Two months later I changed jobs. I moved from state auditing to independent financial inspections, where no one anymore said that I was involved in a family matter.

!!!  Part 4 — Five Years Later, My Ex-Husband Humiliated Me at a Wedding, but the Sight of a Little Girl Suddenly Erased His Smile

We moved to a smaller apartment, in the part of the city where the smell of bread came from the neighbor’s bakery in the morning. I put pots of mint on the balcony for Valeria. She started working again, first for half an hour a day, then longer.

On the first day of winter Nicola drew a small bridge on the window with his finger.

“Dad, can one walk on snow?”

“When the ice becomes hard.”

“And when will Mother run?”

Valeria waved her hand to him.

“Not running yet. But I will still come to you.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

Some wounds remain on the body.

Some—in the voice.

Ivan sent me a letter from prison. It was three pages. He said that his father had forced everything, that he himself had only wanted to save the business, and that he wanted to speak with Valeria.

I read the letter several times.

Then I asked Valeria:

“Do you want me to answer?”

She thought for a long time.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. He should have wanted to speak with me when I was lying on the floor and waiting for help. Now his peace is no longer my obligation.”

I did not send the letter.

Several weeks later Joaquin’s lawyer called me.

“Your testimony is decisive for the case. Joaquin offers a deal. If you say publicly that everything was a family misunderstanding, he will fully cover Valeria’s treatment costs.”

I stood by the window. The first snowflakes were falling outside.

“No,” I told him.

“Think about it. This will be the easy way for everyone.”

“The easy way was already offered to us. It is exactly what brought us here.”

“The amount is large.”

“Valeria’s body belongs to no one as a debt.”

I ended the call.

The court found Joaquin and Ivan guilty. Ivan received a long prison sentence, while Joaquin was deprived of his position, part of his property, and his freedom. The injured landowners were given the right to review the transactions. Some returned to their own workshops. Some could not return, because everything had already turned into ruins.

I did not think of them as a victor.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Me dejaron con sesenta dólares tras mi graduación, pero trece años después mi llegada hizo que mi madre dejara de sonreír

I only knew that Valeria was alive.

One evening, months later, I came home and saw that she was standing independently in the corridor. She still moved slowly, but she was no longer holding the cane.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“To the kitchen.”

“Do you need help?”

“No.”

She took two steps.

Then the third.

I stopped where I was. I realized that the desire to help sometimes resembles love, but if you are not careful, it can also take away a person’s own strength.

Valeria stopped beside me.

“I am afraid,” she told me.

“Me too.”

“But I am still going.”

“I know.”

That night we attached Nicola’s drawing to the refrigerator. The child’s bridge was slightly crooked, and one side was much wider than the other.

Valeria put her hand into my coat pocket and took out the copper bookmark.

“You still carry this with you?”

“Always.”

She ran her finger over the small engraved bridge.

“Now you no longer need to find the way.”

“Why?”

“Because we have already built the way.”

It was snowing outside.

The small copper bridge grew warm in her palm.

This time we were no longer running away from the ruins.

We were standing on our own bridge.

Missed the beginning?
