I secretly boarded my father’s flight, but his words from the speakers immediately erased my smile

At the moment when my husband’s voice sounded from the airplane speakers, seven-year-old Mason squeezed my hand so hard that his nails dug into my skin.

“That’s him, Mom,” he whispered to me. “It’s Dad.”

I was sitting in the seat and raised my phone to film his face. I had arranged this whole little secret precisely for that. Tyler had been a passenger-airplane pilot for almost nine years, but Mason had never flown on the airplane his father piloted.

Every time Tyler left the house, Mason followed him to the door.

“Are you flying a big airplane today?”
“Do the passengers know that you are my dad?”

Tyler laughed, kissed his forehead, and told him that one day he would definitely take him. That Saturday, he said he had a short flight to Chicago and would return before dinner.

I bought two tickets.

Mason turned this operation into a secret mission. He packed small headphones, jelly candies, and a picture he had drawn himself into the bag. Above the airplane wing, in large, curved letters, was written: “Dad is the best pilot.”

We put the picture into a transparent plastic folder. The folder had a red paper airplane-shaped clip that Mason had made at school. He checked from the bag the whole way to make sure it had not been lost.

At the airport we almost collided with Tyler. He was walking on the other side of the terminal, thirty steps away from us. Mason grabbed my arm.

“Mom, don’t look.”
“I already looked.”
“Then run.”

We rushed into the gift shop and stared at refrigerator magnets as if our lives depended on them. Mason’s cheeks reddened from holding back laughter. Tyler disappeared around the corner, and we survived.

On the airplane we chose the back rows. Until the door closed, Mason stood up and sat down again every minute.

“Do you think he knows?”
“No way.”
“Should I tell the flight attendant?”
“No.”
“Just one?”
“Mason.”

He put a finger to his lips and smiled.

A few minutes later, static sounded in the speakers. Tyler’s voice spread through the cabin. He mentioned the weather, the duration of the flight, and made his usual dull joke. Mason was glowing with happiness.

Then the voice stopped.

Several seconds stretched as if the airplane were already in the sky.

“Passengers,” Tyler said again, “today I want to do something I have never done on this flight. There is one special person here. A person who means everything to me.”

Mason turned his head quickly.

“He knows, Mom!”

For half a second I believed it too. Maybe he had seen us at the gate. Maybe the flight attendant had told him. I already imagined how he would say our names and how Mason would jump up.

I began to rise from my seat, but at that moment Tyler’s voice changed.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann nannte mich eine Lügnerin, doch als die Polizisten die Notaufnahme betraten, wich die Farbe aus seinem Gesicht

“I have not dared to see her for seven years. But today I must tell the truth…”

My hand froze on the back of the seat. Mason’s smile slowly disappeared.

The flight attendant approached our row and put a finger to her face.

“Please sit down,” she told me. “You are not supposed to hear this yet…”

“Why are we not supposed to hear it?” I asked the flight attendant when she stopped beside our row.

The woman held a small silver clip in her hand. Her fingers were trembling, although she tried to maintain professional calm on her face.

“Ma’am, please sit down. The captain will explain soon.”
“The captain is my husband.”
“I know.”

That word frightened me more than Tyler’s strange announcement. Mason sat beside me, his shoulders raised, clutching the headphones as if their plastic could protect us from the world.

Tyler’s voice sounded from the speakers again.

“Sophie, if you are on this airplane, please do not be afraid. Today I am saying this aloud for the first time. I am your father.”

Such silence fell over the cabin that the low hum of the engines became like a heartbeat.

I could not move.

“Mom, who is Sophie?” Mason asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Does Dad have another child?”

The answer stuck in my throat. I had lived with Tyler for seven years. I knew his favorite coffee, the grinding of his teeth while he slept, his habit of rubbing the thumb of his left hand over his ring before a flight. But I did not know Sophie.

Tyler continued.

“Sophie’s mother told me that the child no longer existed in my life. I believed her. Or told myself that I did. In truth, I was a coward. Today she is going to Chicago for treatment, and I can no longer hide it.”

A girl stood up from the back rows. She was about ten years old. She wore a yellow hat and held a small blue bag. An elderly woman sat beside her and clung to her arm.

“Sophie?” I said quietly.

The child raised her head.

“I am.”

Mason stared at her. Then he leaned toward me.

“Why didn’t Dad tell us this?”

This time I had an answer, but I could not say it: because I did not know.

The flight was stopped before takeoff. The flight attendants asked the passengers to remain in their seats. Tyler did not come out of the cockpit. Instead, his copilot, Daniel, entered the cabin.

“We need a technical inspection,” he said.
“Is this true?” I confronted him.
“Which part?”
“That Tyler is this child’s father.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I cannot answer you about that.”

Sophie’s grandmother came over to us. An old hospital bracelet hung from her bag.

“Are you Claire?” she asked me.
“How do you know my name?”
“From Tyler. He said that you should know everything before we arrived in Chicago.”

“Everything about what?”

The woman took a yellowing folder from her bag. It had the same red paper clip as the one I had put on Mason’s drawing. My stomach contracted.

“He has had this in his hands for years,” she told me. “But today he signed it for the first time.”

She placed the folder on my knees.

“What is in here?”
“The answer to why Tyler hid Sophie from you.”

Mason put his hand on mine.

“Don’t open it if you’re afraid.”
“I’m afraid,” I answered.
“Then let’s open it together.”

I lifted the folder’s first clasp. At that moment the cockpit door opened and Tyler appeared. His face was ash-gray.

“Claire,” he said, “before you read this, you should know that everything is not as you think…”

Behind him stood a man dressed in a police uniform, waving a document certified with a court seal in his hand…

The document certified with a court seal slipped from Tyler’s hand and fell to the floor.

The policeman picked it up.

“I am Inspector Harris,” he said. “Mr. Reed, for the safety of the passengers, we have several questions for you.”

“This flight should not have been stopped,” Tyler said tensely.
“You stopped it yourself,” Harris replied. “And that was a good decision.”

The folder was still on my knees. The red paper airplane-shaped clip scratched my fingers. Suddenly this small object became heavier than all the lies since the day of our wedding.

“Open it, Claire,” Sophie’s grandmother told me. “No one can postpone this any longer.”

Tyler shook his head.

“No. I must explain first.”
“You had nine years to explain,” I told him. “Now be quiet.”

Everyone in the cabin was looking at us. Mason sat beside me and rubbed his hands over his knees. He did exactly this when he was afraid.

I opened the folder.

The very first page said: “Genetic Paternity Conclusion.”

My eyes went dry.

“This…” I could not finish the word.

Sophie’s grandmother said quietly:

“Tyler submitted a sample two months ago.”

Tyler lowered his eyes.

“Is it positive?” I asked.

Harris took the page from me, looked it over, and answered me directly:

“Ninety-nine point nine percent. He is Sophie’s biological father.”

Sophie bit her lips. Her small hands clutched the blue bag.

“I always knew he was my father,” she said. “Mother said that he did not want me.”

“That is not true,” Tyler immediately replied.
“Then why didn’t you come?” Sophie asked.

Tyler lost his voice.

I looked at the second page. There were bank statements there. Every month, for almost seven years, the same amount had been transferred from our joint account to a Chicago clinic. The money we were saving for Mason’s heart operation.

My fingers went cold.

“Where did this money come from?” I asked.
“I would have returned it,” Tyler said.
“When? When Mason no longer needed an operation?”
“Sophie has leukemia.”

!!!  My dangerous boss asked me to play the role of his girlfriend at midnight, but after my first answer his face suddenly froze

Sophie lowered her head. A small yellow star was embroidered on her hat.

“I didn’t know,” I said quietly.
“I know,” Tyler answered me. “I wanted to protect you.”
“No. You wanted to protect yourself. From my choice. From the truth.”

Tyler’s voice had been heard by everyone through the speakers a few minutes earlier. Now the same man stood before me, but for the first time he looked like a stranger.

Harris took out a third document.

“This is another matter,” he said. “You signed that the money transferred to the clinic came from personal savings. In fact, part of the money came from the airline’s security fund.”

Tyler froze.

“It was only a temporary loan.”
“Money taken without the company’s consent.”

At that moment Tyler’s phone rang in the cockpit. The airline director’s name appeared on the screen. He answered.

“Tyler,” a stern voice said, “we already have the recording. You admitted everything yourself over the speakers. But the main problem is that this statement was not your idea at all. Harris tells us that someone pressured you.”

Tyler slowly turned toward Sophie’s grandmother.

The woman turned her face away.

“Who was threatening you?” I asked.

Tyler could not answer me. The phone rang again. This time it was an unknown number.

He looked at the screen, and trembling passed through his whole body.

“This man should not be alive,” he whispered.

Before he answered the call, one message appeared on the screen: “If you tell Claire everything, Sophie will not reach this clinic…”
