My Pregnant Wife Was Made to Kneel on the Floor by My Mother, but After I Ran Away, the Smile Disappeared from Her Face for the First Time

Returning home at nine in the morning, I found my own wife collapsed at my mother’s feet, while the family doctor was preparing a syringe beside her.

First I saw Emily’s swollen hands, submerged in a silver basin. Then I noticed my mother’s bare foot pressed against her shoulder, as if my eight-month-pregnant wife were not a person but furniture.

Dr. Vance calmly tapped the glass syringe and expelled the air.

That morning I had wanted to surprise Emily by bringing her breakfast. I was still holding a bag of warm bread when I heard her sobbing in the vestibule. The sound struck the high ceiling and came back doubled.

“Scrub harder, parasite!” my mother, Eleanor, ordered. “This house is made of my blood, not yours.”

Emily’s maternity dress was soaked with water. Tears fell straight into the basin. My younger brother, Liam, stood by the stairs and filmed everything on his phone.

“Mother is teaching her how to be grateful before the doctor puts her to sleep,” he told me. “Don’t ruin this scene for us.”

My mother slowly turned around. The smile had not left her face.

“David, you’re back already?”

Emily looked up at me, but she showed no relief. She was afraid. It was the kind of fear that meant she had lost hope of my protection a long time ago.

That hurt more than any of my mother’s words.

The baby moved so strongly beneath the dress that the blow could be seen even from the door. Something inside me finally broke.

I crossed the vestibule, shoved the doctor in the chest, and slammed him against the wall. The syringe fell to the floor, spun, and stopped beside the edge of the carpet.

“Don’t touch me!” Vance shouted.

“Touch her one more time and you won’t be able to use this hand again,” I told him.

I removed my mother’s foot from Emily’s shoulder and helped Emily stand. Her fingers were cold as ice.

“Pack a suitcase,” I told her.

Eleanor chuckled.

“For her? The doctor can take her to an institution where unstable women are treated.”

“For us.”

Liam slowly lowered his phone.

“You’re choosing this fraudulent woman over your own family?”

I noticed red marks on Emily’s wrists. Then I looked at the syringe lying on the floor.

“I’m choosing my own family.”

For the first time, the smile disappeared from my mother’s face.

I took Emily into the bedroom and locked the door. While she changed clothes, I stood by the window and held my father’s old pocket watch. An oak leaf was engraved on its back. When I was a child, Father told me that a strong tree did not break in the wind if its roots were still alive.

Emily was trembling so badly that she could not even fasten a button.

“I have to show you something,” she whispered.

She pulled several crumpled sheets of paper from her pocket.

The first page looked like a medical certificate, but when I read the second paragraph, my breath caught. A huge loan had been taken out against our house. My signature was at the bottom.

It was an almost perfect forgery.

The next page said that the money would be transferred automatically at midnight.

A heavy blow sounded against the door.

“David, open up!” It was my mother’s voice. “It’s time for you to make a decision.”

Emily took my hand.

“If we stay here, everything will be taken from us.”

I looked at the watch. It was exactly nine. Fifteen hours remained until midnight.

I pressed the papers against my chest.

“You’re right, Mother,” I said through the door. “Someone really was careless in this house.”

Eleanor quietly chuckled, as if she were already celebrating my submission.

Emily and I took two suitcases and left through the back door. The morning dew still glittered on the grass in the yard. When I shut the car door, I saw Liam’s phone camera on the second floor of the house.

He was still filming us.

But none of them yet knew that I had taken more than just papers from the house. A tiny recorder hidden inside my father’s watch had recorded the entire morning’s conversation, and when the car passed through the gate, the first message arrived on my phone…

…The message was from the bank’s security department.

“Confirmation of the loan taken out in your name has been received. The final transfer will be carried out within twenty-four hours.”

Sitting beside Emily, I gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my fingers turned white. The baby’s faint movements could be heard in the car, as if still reminding me from inside the womb that we had no time left.

“David, don’t go back,” Emily told me.

“I’m not going back.”

“Your mother will say that I’m lying to you.”

“This time her words won’t change anything.”

At ten fifteen in the morning, we stopped in the underground parking lot of a small hotel in the city center. My old friend Niko worked there. I made only one call.

“Niko, I need a room with a camera and independent internet.”

“What happened?”

“My family doesn’t want to kill me, but they definitely want to take my life away from me.”

Niko came down a few minutes later. In his hand was a ring of iron keys with a small wooden bird hanging from it.

“The room is on the seventh floor. But you should call the police.”

“First I have to organize the evidence.”

I took Emily into the room. Artificial lavender stood on the windowsill, and for the first time that morning its smell seemed suffocating to me. She took off her shoes and sat on the bed.

“How long have they been doing this?” I asked.

Emily lowered her eyes.

“Your mother has been telling me for three months that the pregnancy is harming her family. At first it was only words. Then they locked the doors. Yesterday they took my phone away.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“When I called you, Liam answered. He told me you were at a meeting and laughing about me.”

The words struck me in the heart. I remembered the last months: my strange irritability, the missed calls, Emily’s short messages that always ended the same way—‘Everything is fine.’

It wasn’t fine.

I spread the papers across the small hotel table. The loan agreement was accompanied by a house ownership extract, my bank account number, and a temporary power of attorney. The most frightening page was the last one: a document according to which I had supposedly voluntarily handed over management of the business to Liam.

“This signature is forged too,” Niko said.

“I know.”

“But this alone won’t be enough in court.”

I placed my father’s pocket watch on the table. The back cover looked slightly bulged. Years earlier Father had told me never to open the watch unless I truly needed to.

“What’s inside?” Emily asked.

“I don’t know.”

I opened the tiny screw with my fingernail. Inside was a miniature recorder and a memory card. Niko lost his voice for a moment.

“Did your father leave this for you?”

“Probably. But why didn’t he tell me?”

We turned on the recorder.

First my mother’s voice was heard.

“The bank representative will come tomorrow morning. We’ll make David sign, or put him in such a condition that no one will believe him.”

Then Liam’s laughter.

“I already have the video ready. I’ll show everyone that his wife drove his brother crazy.”

Emily covered her mouth with her hand.

The recording continued.

“The house will be ours by midnight,” Vance said. “The sedative will confuse him for several hours. Then he’ll sign everything.”

Silence fell over the room.

“They weren’t trying to deceive you,” Niko said. “They were preparing evidence against your mind.”

The phone rang.

My mother’s number appeared on the screen.

“Don’t answer,” Emily told me.

But the call ended and a second one came immediately. This time it was an unknown number.

“If you don’t answer me now, your wife and child will be out on the street tomorrow morning,” a man’s voice said. “And the worst part is that the bank is already working against you.”

“Who are you?”

“A man who knows why your father really died.”

The call ended.

I picked up my father’s watch. The oak leaf stood out sharply on the cold metal.

My father had died of a heart attack five years earlier. That was what I had been told.

But the stranger knew something that turned my entire childhood into a lie.

At that very moment Niko looked toward the window.

“David, there’s a black car below. There are two men inside.”

Emily put her hand on her stomach.

“The baby is moving.”

I closed the curtains and played the recording again. In the final seconds there was a strange sound in the background—the opening of a metal box and the rustling of paper.

Then my father’s voice was heard, quiet and strained:

“If you are listening to this, David, know that Eleanor made my death look like an accident, but you have not yet seen the greatest betrayal…”

The recording stopped right there.

…The recording had stopped, but my father’s voice still seemed to circle between the walls of the room.

Niko played the memory card again. This time we heard the final seconds more clearly. In the background there was coughing, the sound of a glass being placed on a table, and my mother’s whisper.

“If David finds out that the boy is not his son, he will lose everything.”

Emily froze.

“What did she say?” she barely managed to utter.

My father’s voice returned on the recording.

“The child is David’s son. This is only a false story to turn my son against his wife. David is the true heir, while Eleanor is trying to steal his share of the company.”

I sank into a chair. The wall of the room seemed to move toward me.

“Father knew everything,” I said.

Niko stopped the recording.

“There’s more.”

My father’s voice was heard again.

“Sixty-five percent of the company belongs to David. Eleanor has only temporary guardianship until David turns thirty. His thirtieth birthday is tomorrow. That is exactly why they are trying to declare him mentally incompetent today.”

Emily looked at me.

“You turn thirty tomorrow.”

I nodded.

“My mother is doing everything today because tomorrow she will no longer have control.”

The phone rang again. This time Niko put the call on speaker.

“David, don’t call the police yet,” my mother said. “Dr. Vance is ready, and we can resolve all this calmly.”

“Did you put my wife to sleep?”

“She was hysterical.”

“Did you forge my signatures?”

Silence fell for several seconds.

“You can’t think clearly right now. A pregnant woman is controlling you.”

“And what does my father’s recording say?”

Her breathing suddenly lost its rhythm.

“Which recording?”

That was the confession.

Niko recorded the call. Emily closed her eyes, and for the first time I felt fear giving way to coldness.

!!!  Three years later he rejected me publicly, and I kissed the most dangerous boy — Adrian stopped smiling for the first time

“I advise you not to return home,” my mother said. “Your wife’s birth certificate, medical records, and the child’s future inheritance are in my hands.”

“Did Vance give you anything?”

“Tomorrow morning it will already be too late.”

The call ended.

Someone knocked twice on the hotel door. Niko looked through the camera and immediately stepped back.

“It’s the police. They have a lawyer with them.”

I opened the door. A woman holding a leather folder stood on the threshold.

“I am Ana Mkhedlishvili, the lawyer entrusted by your father,” she said. “For five years I tried to find you, but Eleanor hid every letter.”

“Why now?”

Ana opened the folder.

“Because this morning the bank activated the protection mechanism created by your father. He knew that before your thirtieth birthday your family would try to gain control.”

She placed one document on the table.

“This is proof of the company’s true ownership. There is also a video in which your mother and Liam force a bank employee to forge your signature.”

Emily covered her mouth with her hand.

“How did Father manage to hide this?”

“Because he knew Eleanor would read everything except what was hidden in the watch.”

Just then Ana’s phone rang. She listened, her face changed, and she turned toward me.

“The bank representative is already at your house. Eleanor told him that you were taken away against your will and that Emily is acting to steal the child.”

“Are they in the house?”

“Not only in the house. She filed a report with the police claiming that you attacked the doctor and kidnapped your wife.”

The door of the black car below the window opened.

Emily silently took my hand.

Ana pulled out the second sheet from the folder.

“This still isn’t the worst news. Eleanor signed an additional document yesterday. If we cannot prove by six this evening that you are capable of making decisions, she will also seek guardianship of your child.”

I looked at the watch. It was eleven forty-two.

Thirteen hours until midnight.

And just then a new message lit up on my phone screen: “David, if you tell the truth publicly, your child will not see this country.”

The sender’s number was not my mother’s.

But attached to the message was an ultrasound photograph of the baby, which only one person had taken…
