I only asked to see my grandchildren, but after one decision of mine, Rachel’s smile disappeared from her face forever

“Do not involve the children in this conversation,” I told Rachel, but for several seconds I heard only her irritated breathing on the other end.

It was Tuesday, six o’clock in the evening, in the communal dining room of my new residence. Helen’s brought cake was still lying on the table, and by the window lay a small copper key with a sunflower-shaped head. This key belonged to the back door of my old house, and I could not bring myself to throw it away.

“You are turning their mother against me,” Rachel said.

“I only told them not to interfere in your problems.”

“You are the problem yourself, Mom.”

The word struck my heart as if someone had driven a cold spoon into my chest. Several years earlier, Rachel had sat in my lap at her father’s funeral and told me that I was all she had. Now my existence was only an inconvenience to her.

“Tell the children the truth,” I said quietly. “Do not tell them that I left without love.”

“That is exactly how you act. You leave, sell our house, and abandon everyone.”

“It was my house.”

“No, Mom. It was the family home.”

Mark’s voice came from the background:

“Rachel, tell her that we are going to a lawyer.”

“Do you hear?” she continued. “We simply will not allow an old woman to make such a decision and take the children’s future away.”

I wrapped my fingers around the copper key. Its edges had become smooth over the years because I always carried it in my pocket when I visited my husband David at the workshop. At that moment I felt for the first time that this key belonged not only to a door, but also to my past.

“Go to a lawyer,” I answered. “I have a lawyer too.”

“You do not know at all what you are doing,” Mark shouted.

“For the first time, I know exactly.”

I ended the call, although my hands continued trembling for a long time. Helen came over to me and sat down on a chair.

“Are they trying to make you feel guilty again?”

“Maybe I really am guilty.”

Helen picked up the key and placed it in my palm.

“Marina, the guilty one is not the person who takes her life back.”

That night I could not sleep. At two in the morning the phone rang. It was an unknown number.

“Mrs. Marina, I am Attorney Levan,” a man said. “I found a document connected with your husband. This paper does not concern the sold house, but it may change everything.”

I sat up in bed.

“David’s document?”

“Yes. And one more thing. Mark called our office today. He said that you might have lost the ability to make decisions.”

The lamp in the room flickered. The key lay on my knees.

“What do they want?”

“Come tomorrow morning. Alone. And please do not tell anyone that we found this document.”

The next morning, at eight forty, I went to Levan’s office. An old clock ticked loudly on the wall, while a sealed dark-green folder lay in the corner of his desk.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi hija señaló el vientre de mi madrastra en plena fiesta y, cuando todos se rieron, su sonrisa desapareció

Levan locked the door.

“Before you open it, you need to know,” he told me, “this paper is not only about an inheritance.”

His hand moved toward the folder, and I held my breath…

Levan’s fingers touched the sealed folder, but then someone knocked hard on his door.

“Do not open it,” I told him immediately.

Levan nodded. Mark’s voice came from outside:

“Mrs. Marina, I know you are here. This is no longer funny.”

Cold spread down my neck. How had he found me? Levan put the folder in a drawer and turned the key.

“How did he enter this building?” I asked.

“He probably called someone at your residence. But he has no right to enter here.”

“Open the door,” Mark shouted. “We are talking about a family matter!”

Levan picked up the phone and contacted security.

“There is a back exit here,” he told me. “There is a staircase in the corridor.”

“I do not want to run away.”

“This is not running away. It is protecting your boundaries.”

As I was going down the stairs, a small voice recorder lying on Levan’s desk caught my eye. Its green light was blinking.

“Was the whole conversation being recorded?”

“Yes. With your permission.”

It was raining outside. I got into a taxi at the street corner and only breathed out when the car had left the office behind.

That same day, at noon, Rachel called me again.

“Mom, Mark said you were at a lawyer’s.”

“That is true.”

“Why are you hiding everything from us?”

“Because when I tell you something, you use it against me.”

“We simply want to know what you have left.”

Suddenly I realized that her voice was no longer the frightened voice of a daughter. It was the voice of a person afraid that she would not receive something.

“You have not lost anything, Rachel.”

“Then why are you being so secretive?”

“Because for the first time my life is no longer public property.”

Mark snickered on the other end.

“Tell her that soon we will prove in court that pressure was put on her.”

“Who put pressure on her?” I asked.

“Probably the people you are living with now.”

“They are my friends.”

“You do not need friends, Mom. You need family.”

For the first time I no longer felt the desire to explain anything to her.

“I remember family when I am alone. But you remember me when you need a house.”

Rachel held her breath.

“That is unfair.”

“It was unfair when for years you came only when you needed something, and I still waited for you.”

The call ended.

That evening I sat with Helen in the small room of the library. Raindrops hit the glass outside, and my husband’s old notebook lay on the table. Levan told me that he had found it among David’s workshop belongings when the buyers began repairing the house wall.

“What are you waiting for?” Helen asked me.

“I am afraid that it says something there that I should have known long ago.”

“Sometimes the truth comes late, but it is still better than living on a lie.”

!!!  Me excluyeron de la boda de lujo de mi cuñado y, cuando sonó el teléfono, Ethan dejó de respirar

That night I spoke with my grandson Nika. His voice was quiet.

“Grandma, Mom said that you will take our house away from us.”

“Nika, this house was never yours.”

“But my room was there.”

“I know, dear. A room can change. Our love cannot.”

“Will you come back to us?”

My eyes burned.

“I have not gone anywhere. I simply moved to a place where people are happy that I am here.”

The next morning Levan called me.

“We are opening the folder today,” he told me. “But there is still one issue. The person named in the document is not only you.”

“Who is it?”

“Your grandchildren.”

My hand seized the same copper key again. Levan told me that Rachel and Mark had already filed an application to temporarily restrict my financial decisions.

“They will say that you are confused,” he continued. “Therefore tomorrow everything must be said truthfully.”

“And what if my truth hurts them?”

Levan looked at me for a long time.

“Mrs. Marina, you do not yet know the most important truth.”

He opened the folder. He took out the first sheet. David’s handwriting was visible in its upper corner, and below was one sentence that I was about to read…

“If you are reading this letter, Marina, it means that at last you have learned to choose yourself.”

Such silence fell in Levan’s office that I could hear every tick of the wall clock. The paper trembled in my hand.

“This is David’s handwriting,” I said.

“Yes,” Levan answered. “He wrote the letter eleven years ago and left it with a notary.”

“Why did I not know?”

“Because he promised that the letter would be given to you only when you sold the house or when someone tried to interfere in your decisions because of it.”

Rachel and Mark appeared in the doorway. With them was a young woman who was presumably their lawyer.

“This is all ridiculous,” Mark said. “Your mother is emotionally unstable.”

Levan looked at him calmly.

“Mrs. Marina fully possesses her property, finances, and decision-making ability. This is confirmed by a doctor’s certificate, bank statements, and all signatures from the last three years.”

Rachel sank into a chair.

“I only wanted to help.”

“Help is when you ask a person how she is,” I told her. “Not when you ask what she will leave you.”

Levan took out a second document.

“David transferred part of his life-insurance money into a special fund. The fund belongs to Marina, and its purpose is the children’s education, only if she herself entrusts the money to them.”

Mark’s face changed.

“How much is it?” he asked.

“Enough to finance higher education for both children,” Levan answered. “But Rachel and Mark have no access to this money.”

Rachel raised her head.

“Dad left this for us.”

“No,” I said. “He left it for the children. For you he left only responsibility.”

Levan opened the notebook. Inside were notes written in David’s hand, recording how Mark took money from me for various reasons. Car repairs. Paying off a debt. Expenses after Rachel was dismissed from her job.

!!!  Mi esposo me dejó sola durante una emergencia y volvió con flores; al ver la sala vacía, su sonrisa desapareció

“You knew this?” I asked Rachel.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“He told me that you helped us willingly.”

“I helped you willingly because I thought I loved my daughter. I did not know that you were using my love as an account.”

Mark stood up.

“You obtained all this illegally.”

“They are my own notes,” Levan said. “And your statements today were recorded on my voice recorder.”

Mark froze.

“You trapped us?”

“No,” I answered. “You simply heard yourselves through someone else’s ears for the first time.”

Rachel was crying.

“Mom, I did not want to lose you.”

“Then why did you treat me as if I no longer existed?”

She had no answer.

Levan handed me the last sheet. David’s letter said that if loneliness in my life ever became greater than the house, I should sell the house and use the money for something that would bring people closer to one another.

“That is why I moved here,” I told them. “And not only because you hurt me.”

That same evening Helen told me that the head of our residence was looking for someone who would meet the new residents and create a circle of friendship for them. This was what David’s letter said: a room where lonely people would no longer wait for one another.

But then Levan looked at his phone. His face suddenly became tense.

“Mrs. Marina, the police called me. Mark has filed a new complaint against you. This time he says that you intend to transfer money from the children’s fund and that the children are in danger.”

I went to the window. Helen’s flowers swayed in the wind in the yard.

“And what are they expecting now?”

Levan answered:

“They will come to you tomorrow morning. But Mark does not yet know that we have already found his signed application at the bank…”
