Part 4 — At the Engagement Dinner, My Mother Was Humiliated with Wine, but When the Manager Asked for the Camera Footage, Her Smile Disappeared

When I read the message, the air in the room seemed to grow heavier.

Father snatched the phone from my hand.

“Marcos, lock every exit.”

“They are already locked,” he answered.

Mateo looked toward his mother, but Elvira was already being led away by the investigators. The sound of her heels could be heard in the corridor. Even. Fast. Then it disappeared.

Daniel called a second time.

Father answered the call and turned on the speaker.

“Where is the file?” he asked.

Silence fell in the phone for several seconds.

“Do you think Elvira controlled everything?” Daniel’s voice came through. “She only drew your attention.”

“Hide from me if you want, but a threat will have an answer,” Father said.

“You should not ask Sofia what her father did ten years ago.”

My breath caught.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Daniel chuckled.

“Ask him why his first partner disappeared from the company’s documents.”

Father turned his face away.

“Daniel, this is the final warning.”

“The main file is in the old wine cellar. If you want Sofia to remain alive, come alone.”

The call ended.

Mateo looked at Father.

“Is he threatening to kill Sofia?”

“The police are already on their way,” Marcos said.

“I am going to that cellar,” I said.

Father stopped me immediately.

“No.”

“All this began because of me.”

“No,” he answered sternly. “All this began because of the people who thought your fear could be a means of control.”

The next hour passed amid the sounds of telephones, doors, and quick footsteps. A police group surrounded the building. Elvira’s lawyer called and demanded that his client be released immediately.

Marcos listened to the call silently.

“No,” he said at last. “There are recordings, there is a bank trail, and there are witnesses. I cannot protect your client from her own words.”

The lawyer angrily hung up.

!!!  Part 4 — Four months later, when she returned home, she found a strange woman’s shoes in the bedroom, while the smile suddenly disappeared from her husband’s face

Later the investigators played the recording made in the corridor. There Elvira herself said that Sofia was a “simple waitress” and that she would put her mother in “her own place.” For the first time I heard her words from the outside.

It was her voice.

Her laughter.

Her contempt.

Elvira was sitting on the other side of the room and listening to herself. Her face slowly became tense.

“I did not mean it this way,” she whispered.

“But this is what you said,” Mateo answered.

That was the first moment when Elvira could no longer hide behind her own words.

Daniel was arrested at the old cellar that same night. There they found a laptop, false documents, and a recording confirming that Elvira’s nephew had been stealing money from the restaurant accounts for months. The main file was there too.

It said that Elvira and Daniel had together planned to cancel the wedding, shift the accusation of theft onto me, and take control of a share in Father’s company. They thought that if they attached the name of a “scandalous waitress” to me, Mateo’s family would believe everything.

But they failed to calculate one thing.

Recordings are not ashamed of their own truth.

The next day Father canceled our wedding-organizing company. Mateo ended his relationship with his mother, but he did not begin revenge. He made only one statement for the investigators and left the rest to the court.

Several weeks later I saw Elvira in the courthouse corridor. She was no longer wearing the expensive bracelet. In her hand she held a simple plastic folder.

“Sofia,” she called to me.

I stopped.

“It is all over. Please withdraw the statement.”

“Why?”

“Mateo’s life is falling apart.”

“You attacked not Mateo’s life, but my life.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I thought you stood below us.”

“Now you know that a person is measured neither by the name of their job nor by their surname.”

!!!  Me dispararon en la gala de mi esposo, pero cuando todos buscaron mi cuerpo, la expresión de Vincent cambió por completo

“You can get everything back. The wedding, the family, Mateo…”

I shook my head.

“I did not lose Mateo. I only saw what a person becomes when the truth stands before him.”

Elvira’s eyes lit up, but I did not stop anymore.

Three months later, a small wooden sewing table still stood in my mother’s room. The cream-colored shirt stained with wine that evening hung there, washed, but a faint shadow of the stain could still be seen.

Mother did not throw it away.

“Why do you keep it?” I asked.

“Because that night I did not remain silent for the first time,” she answered.

My father and I created a new program for the employees at “Senador.” Every person could learn another direction besides their own work. We sent waiters to financial courses, taught cooks management, and those who worked invisibly had a voice in decision-making for the first time.

I became the restaurant’s managing director, but at least once a week I still put on a white apron and worked in the hall. I wanted never to forget how difficult it is to collect glasses from someone else’s table and smile at the same time as if tiredness did not exist.

Mateo wrote to me once.

“I know that an apology cannot change everything. If you ever want to talk, I will be here.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I sent only one answer.

“I hope you will be well. But I am not going back.”

This was not cruelty.

It was a door that finally opened for me too.

In winter, when the first snow came to Madrid, Mother attached a small drawing to the wall of my new office. Four people stood in front of a restaurant in it: Mother, Father, me, and a little girl holding a white napkin.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Your future daughter,” Mother laughed. “Or simply you, when you still believed you could save everyone.”

!!!  Eltemettem a férjemet és a lányomat, aztán a szüleim negyvenezer dollárt követeltek tőlem — anyám mosolya eltűnt

I looked at the drawing and laughed.

That evening I remained alone in the hall. I extinguished the candles. Clean glasses stood on the tables, and the smell of cinnamon and freshly baked bread came from the kitchen.

I had folded my mother’s cream-colored shirt in the cupboard. The faint stain was still visible, but now it was no longer a sign of humiliation.

It was a reminder.

That dignity can be doused with wine, can be insulted loudly, someone can humiliate you in front of cameras.

But if you do not give yourself up, one day light will fall on that same stain.

I went to the window and looked at the city’s white roofs.

Then I hung the shirt on the hanger.

I no longer hid the stain.

Missed the beginning?
