Part 4 — The Sheriff Crushed Both of My Son’s Knees, and Then One Word from Me Wiped the Smile Off His Face at the Hospital

After Harold’s last words, the phone disconnected.

For one second I could not move.

Sarah.

Tyler.

The hospital corridor.

Everything came together at one point.

“Who is the woman?” I asked Harold when I called again.

“Tyler only says that she was wearing a red scarf. Sarah is in the waiting room now. A woman has been sitting beside her for a full ten minutes.”

I was already running up the stairs.

Nino and Lasha followed me. Barnes and his two deputies remained in the basement, but Nino locked the door from outside and sent the recording that was streaming live to several journalists.

On the third floor of the hospital Sarah stood by the window. A woman sat beside her, a red scarf wrapped around her neck.

The woman immediately stood up.

“Dennis,” Sarah said, “this is Marina. She says she is the mother of Tyler’s classmate.”

Marina smiled.

“I just came to see him.”

I looked at her shoes. Wet earth was stuck to the heel, while the asphalt by the hospital entrance was dry.

“Why didn’t you go into the ward to see Tyler?”

“The doctor did not let me in.”

“You were in Barnes’s car.”

Her smile disappeared.

Sarah turned toward me.

“Dennis, what are you saying?”

Marina stepped back.

“He is crazy. He cleans floors all night and now he is playing detective.”

“You are on camera,” I told her. “And you already know that a recording exists.”

She tried to escape. Nino blocked her way. Security guards arrived within several seconds because Nino had pressed the alarm button.

Marina was not guilty of the shooting, but she had informed Barnes about Tyler’s movements. Her phone contained messages stating what time Tyler would leave practice and with whom he would go home.

Sarah looked at the phone and lost the color in her face.

“She was our neighbor.”

“And the mother of Barnes’s nephew,” Nino added.

That same night Barnes’s lawyer called me.

“My client is ready for an agreement.”

!!!  My husband hit me six times and threw me out of the house, but when my father appeared, his face suddenly turned pale

“No.”

“You cannot win against the county.”

“I am not fighting the county. I am leaving the truth where no one will be able to erase it.”

“Dennis, you also have a past. If the investigation touches your activities, everything will come out.”

“Let it come out.”

For the first time in my life my old name no longer frightened me.

In the morning I entered Tyler’s ward. His eyes were open. A basketball lay beside the bed, but it was already covered with dust.

“Dad, did you find that woman?”

“I found her.”

“And Barnes?”

“They will find him too.”

Tyler looked at the ceiling.

“Will I play again?”

I sat on the chair and took his hand.

“Maybe differently. Maybe not as you dreamed before. But two bullets will not write your life.”

Three days later the county investigative team came to the hospital. They took possession of the video, audio, messages, and Barnes’s signed falsified report.

Barnes was still trying to regain control.

“I was maintaining order,” he said in front of the cameras.

But that same evening everyone heard his own voice.

Nino played the video in the large hearing hall. On the screen Barnes could be seen saying to Tyler: “Don’t look me in the eyes, boy.” Then a shot was heard. Then his laughter.

More than one hundred people sat in the hall.

Barnes stood in the back row and watched himself.

“Turn this off,” he said.

“That is your voice,” the prosecutor replied.

“It is edited.”

Nino turned on the second recording.

Then the third.

For the first time Barnes heard his own laughter the way others heard it.

His face became gray.

“I was only frightening the boy,” he whispered.

Silence fell in the hall.

The lawyer slowly closed the folder.

“Do not repeat those words.”

“But it is the truth.”

“That is exactly why you must be silent.”

That evening Barnes was arrested on charges of abuse of power, falsification of evidence, and intentional serious injury. Judge Cole also resigned when his signed orders were traced.

!!!  Part 4 — Every day they bathed me in the palace, until I raised my hand at the emperor’s next words and his smile lost its color

Marina confessed that Barnes had blackmailed her by threatening to reopen an old case against her son. She handed all the messages over to the police.

I was not happy about their fear.

I only wanted no one ever again to call Tyler’s pain a mistake.

Six weeks later Tyler returned home. Crutches stood beside the bed in his room. The basketball jersey hanging on the wall no longer meant the old life; now it was a sign of survival.

One evening he asked me:

“Dad, were you really Raven?”

The first snow fell against the window glass.

“I was.”

“And who are you now?”

“Your father.”

He looked at me for a long time.

“That must have been harder, right?”

I smiled.

“Much harder.”

After leaving the hospital we moved to a small town. Sarah began working in a library. I no longer continued cleaning courthouse floors. I opened a small workshop where I made sports equipment for children with disabilities.

Tyler practiced every day. At first he took only a few steps with a special support. Then five. Then ten.

After the first ten steps he grew tired and sat down on a chair.

“This is not a victory,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because nobody watched me.”

I knelt before him.

“I was watching you.”

“You always watch me.”

“That is exactly why we both survived.”

Months later Tyler created a basketball group for small children. He could not run on the court himself, but he taught every trick of the game. The children sat around him and listened to his voice the way his coach had once listened to him.

One morning my phone rang again.

It was Barnes’s number.

I did not answer.

Several minutes later I received a message: “I want to talk. I have understood everything differently. Your family can receive money if you change your statement.”

Tyler sat beside me and slowly stretched an exercise band with his leg.

!!!  Am fost acuzată după ce fiica lui a căzut la masă, dar când am indicat paharul, zâmbetul avocatului a dispărut

“Who is it?” he asked.

“The past.”

“Will you answer?”

I turned the phone over in my hand.

“No.”

I deleted the message.

I was left with neither hatred nor the desire to take Barnes’s life into my hands. He had spoken his own words himself, left his own laughter himself, and locked his own door himself.

In the evening I opened the box of old things. Inside was the small copper whistle Tyler had given me when he was six.

That night, when he was afraid of being lost, this whistle had been cold as ice in my hand.

Now Tyler took it from the table.

“Can I hang this on my bag?”

“Why?”

“If I ever get lost, you will find me again.”

I attached the whistle to his bag. A ray of sunlight drew a small bright stripe across the copper surface.

Tyler opened the door and slowly went outside.

I followed behind him, but this time not to protect him.

To walk beside him.

The copper whistle rang lightly in the wind.

Tyler was no longer lost.

Missed the beginning?
