Part 4 — When My Parents Gave My Sister Eighty Thousand Dollars, Leaving Me Nothing, My Father Smiled Strangely

And he began taking a sheet of paper out of the box.

The clock in Gela’s office showed ten in the morning. There was dust on the windowsill, and the smell of old paper and wax came from the wooden cabinet.

I sat motionless on the chair.

Gela placed the sheet on the table.

“This is an addition to your grandfather’s will,” he said. “Officially registered, but deliberately hidden.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew what your father was doing.”

Grandfather’s signature was visible on the sheet. Below it was written that RTKO’s controlling share was to be transferred equally to both grandchildren only if financial transparency was maintained in the company’s management. If any governing family member concealed funds, his right would immediately pass to an independent trusteeship fund, while you, as the only real creator of the company’s technological and administrative systems, would be given the right to choose a new manager.

I read the final paragraph several times.

“Grandfather knew about my work?”

“He knew everything,” Gela replied. “He also secretly invested in your company. Then, when he realized that your father was making money disappear, he decided that the truth should be revealed to you only when you were able to defend yourself.”

The telephone rang.

It was Irakli.

“Nino, your father is trying to stop the audit. His lawyer says that he is psychologically incapable and cannot make decisions.”

“And what should we do?”

“We have already done it. We filed Gela’s document with the court. The investigators have also frozen the accounts.”

I went to the window. Buses moved along the street, while people went on with their ordinary lives. At the same time, my family was falling apart from fear.

Father called me ten times.

The first time he shouted.

“You are destroying everything!”

The second time his voice became calmer.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine Mutter wollte meine Frau und Töchter aus dem neuen Haus werfen – doch als sie den Brief sah, verlor sie plötzlich die Farbe

“Let us make an agreement.”

The third time he told me almost in a whisper:

“I am your father.”

I answered none of the calls.

Two days later a hearing took place in court. Father sat in the courtroom, and Amy sat beside him. Her face was tired, but this time she no longer avoided looking at me.

The judge played the recording. It was a hidden audio recording of the dinner from four years earlier, which had accidentally remained in an old device on my desk.

Father’s voice rang out in the courtroom.

“Not even one dollar from RTKO will come from you.”

Mother’s voice followed:

“Amy needs the future, and you should look after yourself.”

Then we heard my voice.

“When I worked for free, I was family. But when it came to money, I was not anymore?”

The courtroom fell silent.

Father lowered his head. For the first time he heard his own words as I had heard them then—cold, ruthless, and final.

The judge approved the audit report, the transfers, the forged records, and Grandfather’s additional will. Father was deprived of the right to manage RTKO. The company passed into independent management. The investigation continued in the criminal direction, while Amy became obligated to return the money because her signature was also on the documents.

Amy took my hand outside the courthouse.

“Nino, forgive me.”

I looked at her hand.

“Then why did you say nothing?”

“I was afraid that I would lose everything.”

“I lost everything too. I simply realized afterward that what remained was mine.”

I did not want revenge. I wanted each person to feel the consequences of their own decisions themselves.

Father lost his lawyer within several weeks. The lawyer refused because even his fee was being paid from the company’s hidden account. Mother left the city and moved into a small apartment. Amy could no longer return to Paris, but for the first time she began working in her own name, without the family’s money.

!!!  Part 4 — They buried my husband, and that same evening my brother demanded that I give him the car, while one move by my father put everyone in their place

An old family photograph remained in one room of my house. In it, Amy and I were children, and we held Grandfather’s small wooden boat in our hands. I did not throw the photograph away. I simply left an empty place beside it on the wall.

Three months passed.

My company moved into a new office. In the morning I made coffee for the employees, and in the evening I looked at the city through the large windows. I was no longer afraid that someone would suddenly come in and tell me that my life actually belonged to them.

One Sunday Amy’s little daughter, Lea, came to me. She was eight years old and held a colorful sheet of paper.

“Aunt Nino, I drew this for you.”

A large house was visible on the sheet, with trees around it and a black gate. A small boat was drawn by the gate, with a red crack through its middle.

“Why does the boat have a crack?” I asked.

Lea shrugged.

“Because broken things float too.”

Her words pressed something inside my heart.

“It is a very beautiful drawing.”

“Can I stay here when Mother is working?”

“Always.”

That evening I realized for the first time that my house was no longer only proof of victory. It had become a place where a child would no longer have to earn love.

Four months later Father sent me a letter. It contained only two sentences: “I understand everything. Let us start again. This house is still part of our family.”

I held the letter in my hand for several minutes.

Then I sent it back.

In reply I wrote: “Starting again without the truth is impossible. This house is part of my family, but now I decide who enters it.”

It rained that night.

I went out onto the terrace and took the copper key from my pocket. The thin crack still ran through the small boat engraved on its handle. For years I thought that this crack was a sign of defeat.

!!!  Mi esposo me exigió que dejara de llamar mientras yo salía del hospital, pero una llamada hizo que su sonrisa desapareciera

Now I knew that it was not so.

Sometimes a door opens precisely where you once broke.

And the key remained in my hand.

Missed the beginning?
