Part 4 — Fourteen years later, my son invited his biological father to the final, but Daniel lost color upon hearing his first words

Patricia’s voice was almost lost in the noise of the stadium, but I still heard it.

An old adhesive label was stuck to the folder. The ink had faded at the corners, while in the middle, in Mariana’s handwriting, it said: “For Mateo, when he is ready.”

Daniel froze in place.

“This should not be here,” he said.

Patricia looked at him.

“It should have been exactly here. You simply did not ask about it for years.”

Daniel brought the phone to his ear.

“Irakli, come to the stadium right now. No, I no longer care about the meeting. This matter must be settled urgently.”

He listened for several seconds, then his face changed.

“What do you mean, you refuse?”

We could not all hear the answer, but we could hear Daniel’s voice.

“I pay you to solve my problem!”

He ended the call and looked at the stands. The cameras in the hands of the people were still directed toward him.

“You all understood it incorrectly,” he said. “I was simply in a difficult period.”

Mateo answered calmly:

“In a difficult period, your mother died and I was four years old. And you left.”

Daniel fell silent.

Patricia opened the folder. The papers smelled of old dust and lavender. A notary’s seal could be seen on one sheet.

“Mariana wrote this statement two weeks before her death,” she said. “She knew that her health could worsen at any moment.”

Mateo lowered the microphone.

“Mother knew?”

“She knew that Daniel had already once tried to refuse custody of you. But she also knew that Luis was the safest person for you.”

I could barely produce my voice.

“What does the document say?”

Patricia handed me the sheet.

Mariana wrote that Daniel did not want to raise his son and that if anything happened to her, she asked me to become Mateo’s legal guardian. She also wrote that Daniel sought the child only when his own reputation or money was in danger.

Mateo closed his eyes.

“Mother knew all this?”

“Your mother was trying to protect you,” I told him.

Daniel stepped forward.

“This means nothing. I am his father.”

“No,” Patricia said. “This document means that you yourself signed a refusal of custody.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Eu carregava um anel para pedir outra mulher em casamento quando encontrei minha ex com três crianças, e o sorriso dela desapareceu

The color disappeared from Daniel’s face.

Patricia took out a second sheet and showed everyone his signature. Below it was clearly written that he could not fulfill the child’s duties even temporarily and that in the future he would have the right to get him back only by a court decision.

Mateo looked at the document.

“You signed this?”

Daniel could not answer.

“Tell me,” Mateo said. “Did you really sign it?”

“I was ill then.”

“I was four years old.”

“I did not know what I was doing.”

“But I knew who I was with.”

At that moment two security guards came from the stadium administration. They told Daniel that he had to leave the area because the recordings made after the match were already spreading publicly and fights were beginning among teachers and parents.

Daniel tried to approach me.

“Luis, we should have talked alone. I can explain everything to you.”

“You had fourteen years to explain.”

“I’ll give you money. For Mateo too. I’ll get him into university.”

“We have already gotten in. By our own efforts.”

“You will regret this.”

“Maybe. But I no longer carry your threats on my back.”

He left, although ten minutes later his lawyer called me.

“Mr. Luis, my client demands that the recording be deleted.”

“No.”

“Otherwise we will meet in court.”

“Then we will meet there.”

“You do not understand whom you are fighting.”

“No,” I answered. “This time you do not understand whom you are defending.”

The next morning, the employees of Daniel’s company sent a statement to journalists. A few hours later Mateo’s recording spread. For the first time people heard Daniel’s real voice, the voice of the man who said that he needed his son for his own reputation.

That evening Daniel was forced to attend a meeting of his company’s board of directors. I was not there, but later we listened to a recording of that meeting on Mateo’s phone.

Daniel was saying:

“I was only trying to get my son back.”

Then the chairman of the board played the audio.

“I’ll take the boy to the final, take two photos, and we’ll see how we can use this.”

!!!  La șase luni după înmormântarea soțului meu, l-am găsit lângă mormânt, iar când m-a văzut a făcut un pas spre mine

His own voice returned to the room.

Daniel was silent for a long time.

“Did I say this?” he asked.

“Yes,” the chairman answered. “You.”

There, for the first time, he heard himself through someone else’s ears. He no longer had a friend’s voice trying to justify him. He no longer had a camera to pose for. There were only his words and the silence hanging in the room.

That same week the board removed him from his position. The company’s accounts were sent for inspection, and a financial fraud case was opened against Daniel. I watched it from a distance and was not happy about his downfall even once.

When a person avoids his own decisions for years, he eventually collides with them anyway.

That week we also left our old apartment for the first time.

In Mateo’s room, his first jersey still hung on the wall. On top of the wardrobe lay the small wooden moon, his old night-light. The bulb was burned out, but Mateo told me that he could not leave it behind.

“I had this when I moved in with you,” he said.

“I know.”

“You lit it for me every night.”

“Until you were sure that you were at home.”

He placed the night-light in my hands.

“Now I want to know that you are at home.”

We moved to a new city, where I opened a small branch of my workshop. In the morning I heard the sound of car engines, and in the evening Mateo worked on his university applications. In the kitchen I prepared lunch for him for the first time, although I burned the rice slightly.

“It’s still delicious, Dad,” he told me.

“You’re lying.”

“You also lied when you said my first drawing was beautiful.”

I laughed.

Six weeks after the final, Mateo received an athletic scholarship to university. We stuck the letter to the kitchen refrigerator. Beneath it we left a small childish drawing that he had drawn for me when he was four: two men, one large sun, and a house whose window contained a yellow spot.

On the first snow of winter we went outside together. Mateo was already taller than me, but he still threw a snowball at me just as he had in childhood.

!!!  Mi esposo murió lejos de casa y mi hija insistió en controlar cada detalle, pero al verme entrar dejó de sonreír

“Dad, do you remember what you promised me that morning?”

“That I would not leave you alone.”

“You kept it.”

I could not answer.

That same evening I received a message from Daniel.

“Luis, I have lost everything. I have only Mateo left. Please give me one chance. I intend to apologize to him.”

I did not need Mateo’s permission. He saw the message himself, because my phone was lying on the table.

“Do you want to answer?” I asked.

He thought for a long time.

“Not now. Maybe someday, when the apology is for him and not for his own rescue.”

I did not delete the message. I did not send an answer either. Sometimes silence is not cruelty. Sometimes it is the only way not to take someone else’s consequences upon yourself again.

That night I placed the small wooden moon in the new room. I changed the bulb and switched it on. A yellow arc appeared on the ceiling again.

Mateo poked his head through the doorway.

“Dad, turn it off if you want.”

“No,” I told him. “Let it stay on.”

Snow was falling outside the window. And inside the house, for the first time, no one was afraid of the morning.

The wooden moon was shining.

We were at home.
