My ex-wife came to our eldest daughter’s wedding in an expensive dress, but when the box was opened, her smile disappeared

Adel turned on her mother’s voice through the microphone at the moment Maia was about to accuse me in front of all the guests, and such silence fell over the hall as if everyone had stopped breathing at once.

The wedding hall was full of sunlight on Sunday morning, at half past eleven. Golden light flickered in the crystal lamps hanging from the ceiling, while on the tables, together with white roses, lemon slices lay in small glass jars. I was standing beside Adel and straightening her veil when my phone trembled.

The message was from Maia.

“I will definitely come to our daughter’s wedding. What will I tell my new family if I miss such an important day? I will be there.”

Even after fifteen years, seeing her words made my hands freeze. It was as if at that very moment I was standing again in the hallway of our old apartment, holding nine-month-old Nina in my arms, while Maia was throwing clothes into suitcases.

“You cannot give me the life I want,” she told me then. “Harry can. He bought me a new car and took me to the Maldives. I deserve this life.”

“Maia, we have six children. Where are you going?”

She gripped the door handle and did not look into my eyes even once.

“You are poor, Luka. It is your fault that I am suffocating here.”

Harry was her boss. The man with whom she had already been cheating for several months. I still hear the sound of the door closing.

After that day I stayed. I worked double shifts in a warehouse, and at night I cooked dinner for the girls. I learned to distinguish ten different shades of pink, to braid hair, to wash school uniforms, and also how to hide my exhaustion when a child missed her mother.

I did not miss a single school performance.

When I told Adel about Maia’s coming, I thought her face would change. But she simply smiled.

“Invite her, Dad.”

“Are you sure?”

“Very. I have prepared a special welcome for her.”

Now, at the entrance to the hall, Maia really was standing there. She was wearing a sparkling green dress, holding an expensive bag, and smiling with such confidence as if she had spent fifteen years as one long weekend.

She hugged Adel.

“My darling, at last we are together,” she whispered. Then she added loudly: “You must understand, my child, back then everything was your father’s fault. He was poor and could give me nothing. And I deserved more.”

Words stuck in my throat. All six daughters were standing behind me. Nina was still holding the little silver hair clip that I used to fasten in her hair when she was a child and whose loss she had always feared.

Adel looked at her mother. There was a smile on her face, but her eyes were cold and calm.

“Mother, of course I understand,” she said. “I also have a gift for you. I prepared it especially for your coming.”

Maia hung the bag on her elbow.

“Darling, you didn’t have to.”

“I know,” Adel replied. “That is why it is not expensive.”

Two waiters brought an enormous wooden box in through the back door of the hall. On the lid of the box was visible the burned seal of my old workshop—the thing I had thought I had lost in the trash fifteen years ago.

!!!  Part 4 — My father threw me out of the house when I was fourteen, but a stranger who came to the hospital suddenly turned pale.

For the first time, Maia’s smile changed.

“What is this?” she asked.

Adel opened the lock. All the guests turned around. One hundred and fifty people were looking at the box.

Maia took one step backward.

“Adel, don’t you dare…”

My daughter reached toward the lid, and at that very moment the hall doors locked…

Adel raised the lid all the way, and the smell of old papers, childhood perfume, and dried lavender came out of the wooden box. On top, carefully arranged, lay six small folders. The daughters’ names were written on each one.

All color disappeared from Maia’s face.

“Close this box,” she said. “Now.”

“Why?” Adel asked calmly. “The guests are supposed to meet my family.”

“This is a family matter.”

“For fifteen years you have not touched the family matter at all.”

Someone in the hall put down a fork. Its sharp sound seemed so loud to me that my heart contracted. I looked toward Adel, but she nodded slightly. As if she were telling me: “Dad, do not back down now.”

She opened the first folder. Inside were Nina’s tiny baby sock, Kira’s first drawing, and the bracelet from the hospital where I went with all six girls when Maia finally left us.

“You kept all this?” Maia gave a small laugh, but her voice was trembling. “What drama. The children grew up. What is the point of digging up the past?”

Adel took one sheet of paper from the folder.

“The past matters when someone changes it.”

“I did not change anything.”

“Then why did you tell everyone that Dad forbade us to meet you?”

Maia looked toward me.

“Because that is how it was.”

She said this lie so naturally, as if it were the only truth in the room. I had waited fifteen years for these words, and still an old pain woke up in my body. I clenched my hands into fists, but I did not say a word.

Adel opened the second folder.

“Dad wrote to you every month. Six letters. Every one of them.”

Maia’s lips froze.

“I did not receive them.”

“You did,” Kira, my second daughter, said quietly. “An employee of the post office gave us all the returned envelopes when I turned eighteen.”

Maia shook her head.

“That is impossible.”

“No, Mother. What was impossible was for a man whom you declared unfit in front of everyone to raise six children alone.”

One of the guests covered his eyes with his hand. The other guests silently glanced at one another. Harry, who had come with Maia, showed irritation on his face.

“Maia, don’t do this here,” he told her. “We are guests.”

Adel turned her head toward him.

“You are not guests. You are part of this story.”

Harry touched his nose.

“I did not know anything then.”

“Really?” Adel took the third folder. “Then you will not know this either.”

She took a small recorder from the box. The device’s red light came on. I recognized it immediately. It was my old workshop recorder, with which I used to record the fairy tales I told the girls before sleep.

!!!  Part 4 — I Went to the Cemetery with Five Children, and My Ex-Husband’s Gaze Suddenly Froze

Maia grabbed the chair.

“Adel, enough.”

“No. It is only the beginning.”

The waiter removed the curtain from the screen attached to the wall. The lights in the hall went out. A date appeared on the screen, indicating the summer fifteen years earlier.

I stared at the screen. My heart was beating so hard that I thought every guest could hear it.

Maia said to me quietly:

“If you play this, you will lose your own mother.”

In response, Adel pressed only one button.

Her old voice sounded through the hall. The voice that had remained behind the wall that night and that I had thought had disappeared forever.

“Harry, we only have to make Luka believe one thing—that he abandoned the children himself. Then everything will remain ours.”

Harry stiffened in an instant.

“That is not my voice,” he said.

But the recording continued.

“If the girls ever find out that I signed away custody, they will never trust me again. So we need silence.”

The first page of the document then appeared on the screen, while Maia shouted and reached toward the power button. At that same moment, an unknown man stood up at the back of the hall and held out a folder toward me.

“Luka, before these people learn everything, you must know who is behind this recording…”

The unknown man slowly came toward me. He held a black folder with both hands, and a small copper badge gleamed on his chest.

“I am Otar Meladze,” he said. “Fifteen years ago I handled your case at a notary’s office.”

Maia turned her head so quickly that her earring struck her cheek.

“What are you doing here?”

“To bring the truth,” Otar replied.

The lights in the hall came on again. A copy of the document remained on the screen. Maia’s signature was clearly visible on it. The heading said that she voluntarily renounced custody of all six daughters and even temporarily forbade contact with them.

My legs grew heavy.

“This is forged,” Maia said. “Luka arranged everything.”

Otar opened the folder.

“This is a certified copy of the original. The signature was made in my presence, before two witnesses. On the same day, Mrs. Maia received money transferred from Harry’s company.”

Harry became pale.

“From my company?”

Maia looked at him.

“Harry, be quiet.”

“You told me that I was helping you escape from Luka. You did not tell me that you were signing away the children.”

Adel gripped the recorder.

“Now you will learn everything.”

Maia’s voice sounded from the recording.

“Harry, if I do not leave them, I cannot go with you. Luka cannot raise them, people will pity him, and in the end they will turn against me again.”

Then Harry’s young voice sounded.

“The main thing is that you do not return to them. I will pay the money, as long as everything remains quiet.”

Maia covered her face with her hands.

“This conversation was recorded illegally!”

“You turned on the recorder yourself,” Adel said. “That night Dad was reading us a fairy tale at home, and you were talking to Harry in the next room. The recorder was accidentally left on.”

I looked at Adel.

“When did you find it?”

“Three months ago. While clearing out the old workshop building. Dad, you did not even know about this recording.”

!!!  Part 4 — I was unfairly fired from my job, and that same night I found myself in the mafia boss’s bedroom, and his reaction amazed me

I lowered my head. At that moment what hurt me most was that my daughters had carried this truth before I did.

Nina took a step forward in front of Maia.

“Why did you not come even once?”

Maia’s eyes filled with tears, but none of us believed these tears anymore.

“I was afraid.”

“No,” Nina said. “You were ashamed that returning to us no longer had a price.”

Maia reached out her hand toward Adel.

“Child, I am your mother.”

Adel stepped back.

“Motherhood is not only giving birth.”

Otar took out another sheet of paper.

“There is one last document as well. You must definitely be able to see it, Luka.”

The paper bore the seal of Harry’s company. It said that the money paid to Maia was in exchange for custody of the children, but another clause also appeared in the same contract—if any daughter became an adult, she had to report the company’s financial fraud.

Harry saw the paper and stepped back.

“That is impossible.”

Otar answered calmly:

“Adel is already an adult. And her name is also written in the documents.”

At that moment Harry’s phone rang. He looked at the screen and his face changed.

“Who is it?” Maia asked quietly.

Harry did not answer. The call came a second time. Then he picked up the phone and brought it to his ear.

“Yes, this is me… what? No, that is impossible… no, the bank has no right…”

We were all watching him. After the call ended, Harry looked at Maia.

“They froze everything,” he said. “But this is only the beginning. The police are already at our office…”

Maia looked toward me, for the first time looking at a person who needed help.

“Luka, please. You can still stop this.”

I was about to answer when my phone rang too. The lawyer’s number appeared on the screen. After his first words I realized that Harry had not yet heard the worst news…
