Part 4 — My Father’s Money Disappeared, and When My Daughter-in-Law Questioned My Mind, Jared Stopped Smiling for the First Time

Who had authority over that account, we found out that very night.

Nora opened a letter received from the bank’s legal department. The corner of the paper was slightly folded, as if someone had hurried to hide it.

“The account was opened with Diana’s life-insurance money,” she said. “Jared was named as the beneficiary. But three years ago Lauren was added as the authorized person.”

Jared leaned against the wall.

“I did not do this.”

“Neither did I,” I said.

Nora raised the last sheet.

“The addition was made through an electronic power of attorney. The document bears Jared’s digital signature, but the signature time is listed as a day when he was in another state. We also have the airport record.”

Lauren immediately picked up her phone.

“I will call my lawyer.”

“You already called him,” Nora answered. “He said he would no longer become involved in this case.”

It was as if the air left Lauren.

“What does it mean, he will no longer become involved?”

“It means that he knows how bad a position you are in.”

Jared’s phone rang several times in succession. It was the company’s financial director. Then the bank called him. Then the insurance company. The accounts in the company created by Lauren were frozen while the origin of the transfers was checked.

Lauren walked around the room and answered every call with the same words:

“This is a mistake.”

But no one believed her anymore.

The next day we went to the police station. Lauren sat away from me, with her hands folded on her knees. Her white coat no longer looked elegant. A seam near the collar had come undone, and a black thread showed from it.

The investigator placed the recording on the table.

“Mrs. Blake, is this your voice?”

Lauren looked at the screen.

“It was cut out of context.”

“Then let us listen to it in full.”

The recording began.

Her own voice sounded:

“When I get guardianship, no one will check me anymore. Jared will only sign.”

Lauren froze.

Her voice was sounding again in the room, but now she was hearing herself from outside. I saw on her face the moment when a person first understands that his own lie can no longer be remade.

!!!  The husband brought his mistress and newborn to the reading of the inheritance, but his face turned pale at the lawyer’s very first words

“I did not say it like that,” she whispered.

The investigator closed the interrogation record.

“You said it exactly like that.”

“Oscar, you know that I did everything for Jared.”

“No,” I answered calmly. “You did everything for your own control.”

Lauren looked at Jared.

“Are you really taking his side?”

Jared said nothing for a long time.

Then he answered:

“I am taking the side of the truth.”

A criminal investigation against her began. Part of the money was immediately accounted for, while some had already been spent. It turned out that Lauren had bought an expensive apartment, a car, and jewelry with the same transfers.

But I did not want to watch her being punished.

I wanted, finally, for my life no longer to depend on her name.

The court issued a temporary protective order. The guardianship request was rejected because an independent doctor confirmed that I fully possessed my mental abilities and the capacity to make decisions.

That same week I learned that my small apartment needed to be replaced. Jared offered me another place to live, but this time I did not refuse.

“I am not asking you to move in with me,” I told him. “I want to have my own place.”

“Then we will find the best place.”

“Not the best one. Just a warm one.”

We found a new apartment near the river. A tram line could be seen from the window. When I entered for the first time, the floor was warm and light came directly into the kitchen in the morning.

I took only a few things from the old apartment. Diana’s photograph. My notebook. And the copper tram-shaped keychain that I always remembered as her gift.

In the old kitchen remained an empty shelf where I had hidden the camera. And there was no longer a soup jar on the table.

Only one small circle remained on the wooden surface where the jar had stood for years.

I could not erase that circle.

Several weeks later Jared came every Saturday. Once he brought his seven-year-old daughter, Emma. The girl filled my new living room with colored pencils.

!!!  When My Husband Gave My Children No Place in His Home, His Smile Disappeared After My Calm Answer

“Grandpa, do you live here now?”

“Yes.”

“Are you not cold here anymore?”

“No longer.”

She sat me by the window and showed me a small drawing. On it I was standing, holding the sun in my hands. Beside me was a large yellow house.

“This is your house,” Emma told me. “Because there is light here.”

Jared stood in the kitchen and quietly watched us.

“Dad, can you forgive me?” he asked.

“For what?”

“For believing Lauren. For not coming even once and seeing with my own eyes how you were living.”

I sat beside him.

“You made a mistake. But your mistake ended when you saw the truth.”

“And if we start from the beginning?”

“Not from the beginning. More correctly.”

His eyes lit up, but we both knew that trust does not return after one conversation. It is built every day, like a house.

Two months later the court ordered Lauren to return the stolen funds. Part of her property was sold, and part remained frozen. She was also sentenced, but I went to the hearings only when my testimony was needed.

At one of the hearings she did not even look toward me.

It did not hurt me anymore.

I simply understood that the person whom I had once considered a member of my family now stood finally far from me.

Three months later, on a snowy morning, a letter arrived at my new apartment. The envelope was white, and my address was written on it in Lauren’s hand.

“Oscar, everything went too far. I was only afraid. Tell Jared that the family can still be saved. If you help me, I will explain everything to you.”

I read the letter several times.

Then I called Jared.

“I received a letter from Lauren.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing. I simply wanted you to know.”

“Do you want us to answer?”

I went to the window. A tram was moving slowly in the street, its bell disappearing into the snowy air.

“I have already answered.”

“What did you write to her?”

“That I will no longer be the protector of her fear.”

!!!  Part 4 — When I was forced to appear as a servant in my own house, I placed three silver covers on the table and my father lost color

Jared fell silent.

“Was that everything?”

“Everything that was necessary.”

That evening I attached Emma’s drawing to the refrigerator. The yellow house was slightly tilted, and the sun was larger than the sky above the roof.

Then I placed Diana’s photograph on the windowsill. Beside it I put the copper tram keychain.

For years this keychain reminded me of the past. But now, for the first time, it looked like the future—a road that was still ahead.

Jared stopped at the door before leaving.

“Dad, I will come for breakfast tomorrow morning.”

“Good.”

“And I will not bring you soup anymore.”

I laughed.

“Then at least bring bread.”

The door closed. Silence fell over the house, but it was no longer the old silence. There was no fear in it. Only the quiet sound of the heating and the bell of a tram coming from far away could be heard.

I sat at the table, took the keychain in my hand, and ran my finger over the letter “D”.

For the first time since Diana, I understood that being alone and being abandoned were not the same thing.

The first snow fell on the window.

I left the light on.

Missed the beginning?
