Part 4 — At dinner my husband mocked me again, but when I caught his mother in the kitchen, the smile disappeared from his face

The second recording was going not to me, but to the police.

I learned this that same evening, when I stood at the station door and held the laboratory report as if it were my last support.

“Tell me everything once more,” Investigator David said.

On the table before him lay the red packet, my phone, the recording, and the sheet bearing my forged signature.

I began from the start.

The soup.

The containers.

Raisa Sergeyevna’s key.

The recorder in the cupboard.

Oleg’s threat.

David listened carefully and finally asked:

“Who submitted the substance for examination?”

“I did.”

“And do you have a witness?”

“My neighbor Marina.”

Marina sat beside me and constantly rubbed her hands. Her small silver bracelet touched the table with every movement.

“I saw everything,” she said. “The packet, the food, and how Mrs. Raisa tried to take it away.”

David nodded.

“Then do not try to return home alone.”

“Is it no longer my home?” I asked.

“It is your home. It simply will not be safe to return there now.”

That night I spent in a small hotel room. Rain ran down the window, and on the table stood the red packet that the police had temporarily returned to me as evidence. Its bright color could be seen even in the darkness.

In the morning Oleg called me sixteen times.

I did not answer the first call.

Nor the second.

On the fifth he sent me a message: “Mother went too far, but you know what a difficult period she was having.”

I put the phone on the table.

By the tenth call he was calling me differently.

“Larisa, let us talk,” Oleg said. “Everything can be fixed.”

“What needs to be fixed?”

“The apartment, the family, our life.”

“You forged my signature.”

“Mother thought of it.”

“You recorded the conversation.”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Were you afraid of me?”

A long silence followed.

“I was afraid of losing you,” he said at last.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Minha sogra interrompeu a ceia para me acusar diante de todos, mas quando meu marido ouviu uma pergunta, parou de sorrir

For the first time I thought how easy it would be to believe those words if I had not seen his face that day when he handed me the paper. Love is sometimes the most convenient lie, because old memories take part in it.

Three days later David called me.

“Oleg and Raisa Sergeyevna are being questioned. The recording you provided is clear enough against them. It was additionally discovered that during the last two weeks they had been looking for a buyer for the apartment.”

“And now?”

“Now they will have to explain why they tried to take your property and why they put a dangerous substance in the food.”

I was not happy.

Nor did I breathe out with relief as I had imagined.

I was simply very tired.

A week later the investigator summoned me to the station so that Oleg could hand over his things. In the small room he sat opposite me. For the first time I saw a person who resembled my husband, but whom I no longer knew.

“I did not want you to become ill,” he told me.

“Then why did you add this to the food?”

“Mother said that only the taste would change.”

“And why did you record my voice?”

“I wanted everyone to believe that I was nervous.”

David put the recorder on the table and pressed the button.

Oleg’s own voice sounded in the room.

“If Larisa does not leave the house, I will convince the doctors that she cannot control herself. Then we will sell the apartment and Mother will move in with me.”

Oleg lowered his head.

Hearing one’s own words is like looking into a mirror, except that the mirror no longer forgives a lie.

“Enough,” he said.

“No,” David replied. “You said this.”

Oleg’s lawyer considered the case hopeless the next day. He refused to defend the forged signature and advised him to think about confessing to the crime. Raisa, meanwhile, continued repeating that she had done everything to save the family.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — M-au concediat după douăzeci de ani pentru că eram „inutilă”, iar când am ieșit din clădire, directorul a încetat să zâmbească

The trial continued for several months. Each time I saw a photograph of the same red packet in the evidence folder. I did not want to remember it, but for me it was no longer only a sign of poison. It was the boundary that I finally stopped crossing myself.

Oleg received a suspended sentence, a large fine, and a ban on approaching me. Raisa Sergeyevna served her sentence under house arrest because of her health, but ultimately lost the right to sell the apartment. The notary restored my share, while the forged-signature case remained separate.

When the judge read the decision, I felt only one thing—for the first time I was no longer afraid in the room.

On the day I returned to the apartment, the kitchen seemed strangely empty. Oleg’s glass was no longer on the shelf. I put Raisa’s containers in the trash. On the refrigerator door I found her only remaining photograph: Oleg as a child in his mother’s arms, both of them smiling as if their love could harm nothing in the world.

I did not tear up the photograph.

I simply put it in a drawer.

The clean walls were more peaceful than I had expected.

Several weeks later I installed new shelves in the kitchen. I still got up early in the morning, but now I needed only one pot. I moved to full-time work, and in the evenings my neighbor Marina came to my place for tea.

Once she asked me:

“Do you no longer cook soup at all?”

“I do,” I smiled. “I just taste it myself first.”

The first winter snow came at the end of December. It laid a white layer on the windowsill and made the city quiet for several hours.

I stood in the kitchen, holding a wooden spoon and stirring chicken broth. The smell of parsley and carrots filled the room. No one told me that I cooked badly. No one was waiting in the corner with a hidden packet.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich fand ein hartes schwarzes Plättchen hinter dem Ohr meines Sohnes, und als die Polizei eintraf, erstarrte der Beamte

There was only me.

And that was enough.

Four months later I received a letter from Oleg. It said that he regretted believing his mother and that if I gave him one more chance, we would start everything again.

I read the letter to the end.

Then I wrote a reply.

“I do not want to start again. I want to continue where I first trusted myself. Please do not contact me again.”

I put the sheet into an envelope and sent it back.

That evening I put the red packet, which the police returned to me after the case ended, on the kitchen shelf. I no longer hid it or looked at it with fear. I simply wanted to remember how long I had tried to prove my truth to someone else.

Then I threw the packet into the trash.

Steam rose from the pot. Snow fell against the window. I put the spoon into the clean broth, tasted it, and smiled peacefully for the first time in a long while.

The soup was normal.

So was my life.

Missed the beginning?
