Everyone avoided the small sharp-toothed creature because it was not a dog — until the shelter door suddenly locked

That morning I found a small sharp-toothed creature in the shelter yard, trembling as if the whole city had united against it.

The rain began at six in the morning. I was distributing cat food behind the old station, near the garbage containers, when I heard a thin mewing-like sound from an iron pipe. At first I thought it was a puppy. That was exactly why I ran.

I knelt by the pipe and shone my phone light inside.

Two shining eyes stared at me.

The small creature was huddled in the corner. Its ears were large, and its tail was so fluffy that it looked like a dark brush spread across the wet asphalt. It opened its mouth and showed me such thin but amazingly sharp teeth that I instinctively pulled my hand back.

Then it whimpered softly and curled up again.

“All right, little sharp-toothed one, don’t be afraid,” I said quietly. “I didn’t come to eat you.”

It tilted its head, as if it understood what I said.

I took off my jacket and carefully wrapped it. Its wet fur clung to my wrist. It was so light that I was afraid it might fall apart in my hands. At that moment I did not understand that I was holding a fox cub. I only knew that it was a living creature and needed help.

At the shelter, at half past seven in the morning, the veterinarian David put it on the table. An old metal scale stood at the edge of the table, its needle moving nervously.

“This is not a dog,” David said.

“I know. But it is still alive.”

“Elene, this is a fox. Probably three weeks old. Its mother was hit by a car or killed by hunters. A fox cannot be kept in the city.”

“And where should we take it?”

David looked out the window. Outside, beyond the bars, rain flowed down the roofs like a river.

“We’ll call the wild-animal center. But they have no places.”

That same day I posted its photo on the shelter’s page. A small sharp-toothed face could be seen wrapped in my jacket. I wrote: “It urgently needs a temporary home and treatment.”

Photos of dogs received hundreds of comments. This small creature received only one like in an hour. Then even that disappeared.

In the evening the owner, Mr. Irakli, came in empty-handed. Mud dripped from his shoes onto the floor.

“This has to leave here,” he said.

“They cannot take it yet. It is weak.”

“If it were a dog, the whole city would come. It’s a fox. People are afraid.”

“It is afraid too, Irakli. More than we are.”

He looked at the cage. The cub immediately opened its mouth and showed its teeth. Irakli took a step back.

“You see? It is dangerous.”

!!!  Ich wartete acht Jahre auf den Sohn, den mein Mann verlangte – doch im Kreißsaal verschwand plötzlich sein Lächeln

“No. It was simply left alone.”

That night I did not go home. Wrapped in an old blanket, I fed the cub with a small milk bottle. Every time I brought the bottle close, it clung to the nipple with its teeth and closed its eyes. Its breathing was so faint that every few seconds I checked whether it was still breathing.

At two in the morning the phone rang. Irakli’s name lit up on the screen.

“Elene, an inspection is coming in the morning,” he told me. “If that animal is here, they will close the shelter.”

“I can’t move it by morning.”

“Then you take it.”

“Where?”

Instead of an answer, silence fell.

Then Irakli added in a low voice:

“And one more thing. Today someone asked me why you hid that an animal had been brought here. Someone sent a photo.”

I looked at the cage. The cub was asleep, its nose hidden in the sleeve of my old jacket.

“Who sent it?”

“You’ll find out in the morning.”

Exactly then the sound of car brakes rang out outside the shelter. The doors opened. Heavy footsteps approached along the corridor, and someone reached toward the iron cage…

The door handle went down, but I stood in front of the cage.

“Step back,” I said.

Two men stood in the corridor. One wore a dark green jacket, and the other held a plastic box.

“We are from Animal Control,” the first one said. “We received a report about a dangerous fox.”

“Dangerous? It cannot even weigh half a kilogram.”

“We make the decision.”

David blocked their way.

“First you must see the veterinary report.”

The other man held out a document to me.

“Sign the transfer.”

The corner of the paper was bent from dampness. I read it and my blood froze: it said that the cub was aggressive, attacked people, and needed immediate isolation.

“That is a lie,” I said.

“It has teeth, doesn’t it?”

Just then the cub opened its eyes. It moved toward me and stuck a small paw through the opening in the mesh.

“It is simply afraid,” I whispered.

The man in the green jacket shrugged.

“Fear sometimes ends in a bite.”

I gripped my phone in my pocket. The camera was already on.

“If you come even one step closer, I’ll go live.”

For the first time the man looked at me attentively.

“Do you think anyone is watching? If it were a dog, maybe. This one does not even have a comment.”

Those words hurt me more than the threat.

But exactly then David saw the sleeve of my jacket in my hand, and his face changed.

“Elene, where did you find this?”

“Why are you asking me?”

He examined a small metal tag attached to the seam of the sleeve. A barely noticeable number was written on it.

!!!  A menyem kulcsot követelt az új házamhoz, de amikor elővettem a régi dossziét, a fiam elnémult

“This cub did not get here by accident.”

Outside, a car door closed again. Someone said on the phone, “Take the documents first.”

David lowered his voice.

“If this is that animal, I think its mother was not killed. Someone deliberately brought it here.”

“Who?”

He did not answer me. He only touched the metal tag and said:

“I have already seen this number. And that story is much worse than a little fox being lost…”

❤️ Thank you for reading! The continuation is in the first comment 👇

David carefully removed the metal tag and placed it on the table. Only the sound of rain and the cub’s thin breathing could be heard in the room.

“This tag belongs to a private breeding center,” he said. “The number was assigned to an animal that was declared canceled three years ago.”

The man in the green jacket stretched out his hand.

“This is no longer our business. Hand over the cub.”

“No,” I answered.

There was such firmness in my voice that even I was surprised.

David turned on the computer. The cold light of the screen fell across his face. He tapped on the keyboard for several minutes, then suddenly stopped.

“Elene, come here.”

An old photograph appeared on the screen. I saw the same fluffy tail, the same white spot on the neck, and the same dark eyes. Under the photograph it said: “Female fox named Nera. Declared missing two years ago.”

“Is this its mother?” I asked.

“Yes. Look at the edge of the ear.”

The tip of Nera’s left ear drooped slightly. The cub had the same small scratch.

David opened an old record. A date and several lines appeared on the screen: Nera was released in one of the protected forests, but two weeks later she was recaptured from the breeding center. Officially—for scientific observation. In reality, four cubs were taken from her.

“That is impossible,” said the second man.

“No,” David replied calmly. “What is impossible is that your service did not notice this tag.”

I looked at the cub. It pressed its nose to the mesh and closed its eyes.

“Why did they want to take it?”

David opened a new file.

“Three cubs were sold to private collectors. The fourth disappeared. This could be it.”

A heavy silence fell over the room.

The man in the green jacket suddenly locked the door.

“Now it is more important that this information does not get outside.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

He took a card from his pocket and dropped it on the table.

“A representative of the service.”

David looked at the card and laughed. It did not resemble laughter at all.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi exesposa abandonó a nuestras seis hijas y apareció en la boda de la mayor; entonces abrió el regalo y palideció

“This card was canceled four years ago.”

The man’s face tightened.

I turned the camera on again.

“Everything is recorded.”

“Turn it off.”

“No.”

Suddenly the sound of a siren came from outside. The two men looked at each other. A few seconds later the door opened and a policeman entered. Behind him stood a tall woman holding a folder.

“Elene Meladze?” she asked me.

“Yes.”

“I am Mariam Kavtaradze, an investigator from the prosecutor’s office. We received your video ten minutes ago.”

The man in the green jacket stepped back.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

“Then you will easily explain why you were trying to take a wild animal marked with an old tag and why you presented a canceled certificate.”

The man opened his mouth but could not find a word.

Mariam opened the folder.

“We also found the breeding center’s latest transfers. Your name is written in them.”

David lowered his eyes. And for the first time I felt that the little cub was not waiting only to survive. It was exposing something.

Mariam took the phone from me and checked the recording.

“Good. Now the cub must be moved to a safe clinic. But before we go, there is one thing you should know.”

She took a photograph from the folder.

In the photograph Nera stood in the forest. Two people were beside her, and I knew one of them.

My breath stopped.

Mariam told me quietly:

“This is the owner of your shelter. And this morning he himself called us so that they would find the cub…”
