Part 4 — I Came Across My Husband’s Signature at the Hospital, but When He Heard My Question, the Notary’s Face Changed

The police officers knocked on the door.

Sergei immediately slipped his phone into his pocket.

“Lyuda, do not say anything until the lawyer comes.”

Marina looked at him.

“Your lawyer has already refused.”

“What?”

“He called me. He said that he would no longer participate in the case.”

The color drained from Sergei’s face.

One of the investigators arranged the documents on the table.

“Mr. Sergei, you are accused of attempting to fraudulently transfer property, making threats, and forging someone else’s signature.”

“This is a family matter,” he shouted. “My mother signed voluntarily.”

“The recording says otherwise.”

Marina switched on the recorder.

Sergei’s voice sounded in the room again.

“We will tell Lyudmila that everything remains with Kostya. Then I will sell the apartment and pay off the debts.”

For the first time, hearing his own words, Sergei lowered his eyes.

As if the voice belonged to another man.

But it was his voice.

“Turn this off,” he said.

“No,” I answered.

He turned toward me.

“Lyuda, I was afraid.”

“You were afraid of the debts. And for twenty years I was afraid that one day I would wake up beside you and realize that you did not know me at all.”

“I will give everything back to you.”

“My trust is not a thing, Sergei.”

The police did not put handcuffs on him. They took him for questioning first, because the investigator needed to seize all the documents and examine them. But at that moment Sergei lost for the first time the confidence with which he had controlled others all his life.

Vera Nikolaevna sat on the bed and folded the white blanket with her fingers.

“Lyudmila,” she told me, “forgive me.”

I sat down beside her.

“Why did you not tell me from the beginning?”

“Because I was ashamed. I thought that if I protected my son, I would save the family too.”

!!!  Mi tractor desapareció mientras dormía, y cuando lo encontré junto a la sede vecinal, la sonrisa de su conductor empezó a temblar

“Sometimes it is not a lie but the truth that protects a family.”

She nodded.

That day I left the hospital alone.

My silver clasp still hung on the bag, but one corner of the crescent had broken. On the way I tried several times to straighten it with my hand, but I could not.

At home everything was in its place.

Sergei’s shoes stood by the door. His glass was in the kitchen. And in the study, an open notebook had remained on the desk, where the numbers of the debts looked like black lines intertwined with one another.

The next day he called me ten times.

The first time I did not answer.

The second time either.

The third time he sent me a message.

“Just listen to me once.”

Marina advised me to save every conversation.

And I wrote only one sentence:

“I have already heard everything.”

The bank’s examination confirmed that my signature had been digitally processed. A draft of the document was found on Sergei’s laptop, in which my consent had been inserted in advance. It was also established that the notary had been shown only several pages, while the appendices were to be replaced later.

Mother canceled the transfer of the property without going to court, because it became clear that she had received a strong sedative when signing the document and the doctor had not fully assessed her condition.

A case was opened against Sergei.

I did not shout against him in the courtroom.

I simply answered the questions.

“Were you familiar with this document?”

“No.”

“Is this your signature?”

“No.”

“Do you want the accused to be punished?”

I was silent for a long time.

“I want him to take responsibility for his own choice for the first time.”

Several weeks later Vera Nikolaevna left the hospital. She first moved in with me, because she found it difficult to be alone. The first night she could not sleep for a long time.

!!!  Minden este egy nehéz bőrönddel távozott a pékségből, aztán a tulajdonos hat alkalmazott előtt rászólt — és a mosolya eltűnt

“If you had not come that day, everything would have been over,” she told me.

“I would have come, regardless of everything.”

“Why?”

“Because kindness is not a reward for someone else’s secrets.”

The next day she smiled at me for the first time.

Sergei’s case continued for months. He admitted part of the debts, and the court established the rest. He could not sell the house, because an arrest had been placed on the property. Kostya still enrolled at the university, but his mother and I paid the tuition together.

One evening Kostya sat in my kitchen and ate a piece of khachapuri.

“Grandmother said that you saved the house,” he told me.

“Documents protect a house. Truth protects people.”

“Will my father go to prison?”

There was no anger in his voice. Only fear.

“Maybe,” I said. “But that is no longer my decision.”

“Do you still miss him?”

I went to the window. The first snow was falling in the yard.

“Sometimes I miss the person I thought he was.”

Kostya remained silent.

The following month I opened a small accounting office in the old part of the city. In the morning I put coffee on the windowsill, and in the evening I checked the clients’ accounts. For the first time in many years I had my own money, my own time, and my own decisions.

Vera Nikolaevna came to me every week. Sometimes she read old recipes to us. Sometimes she simply sat in silence.

A drawing by Kostya hung on the office wall. It showed a small house, with yellow light coming from its windows. Below it was written: “A house is where they do not lie to you.”

Three months later Sergei wrote to me again.

“I am serving my sentence. I am trying to change. If you can ever, come and see me.”

I did not delete the message for a long time.

!!!  Volví antes de mi misión y encontré a mi hija enferma y sola, pero al mencionar las cámaras mi marido dejó de sonreír

Then I calmly wrote to him:

“Change does not begin with returning to me. It begins with answering for yourself without me.”

And I blocked the number.

That evening I remained alone in the office. Outside, snow was quietly falling on the street. I took the silver clasp out of my bag. The broken crescent was still bent, but now I was no longer trying to straighten it.

It reminded me of the days when I thought I had to fix everything.

But now I knew: some cracks need not repair, but freedom.

I put the clasp on the windowsill.

And for the first time I slept completely peacefully in my home.

Missed the beginning?
