My ex-husband told me loudly enough for everyone in the wedding hall to hear that leaving me had been the smartest decision of his life, but half a minute later a little girl ended up in my arms and his face turned white as ash.
The luxurious hotel hall near Boston glittered beneath crystal chandeliers. I was hugging and congratulating my cousin when I heard a familiar, overly confident laugh behind me.
Marcus.
Five years had passed since our divorce, but he still looked exactly as I remembered him: an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, an expensive watch, and that expression that made a person feel as though they were always guilty before him.
And beside him stood Chloe.
The woman whom I had found barefoot in my kitchen five years earlier—dressed in Marcus’s shirt.
Chloe looked at me and lifted the corner of her mouth.
“Look who survived.”
“Good evening, Chloe,” I replied.
Marcus looked over my simple dark-blue dress and chuckled quietly.
“I heard you disappeared somewhere after the divorce.”
“I moved away.”
“Same thing.”
Chloe placed her hand on his chest.
“Marcus was afraid you would never get out of that state.”
I almost laughed. During our marriage, he controlled the money, while I quietly worked as a financial-law specialist. When I discovered his infidelity, he emptied the joint account and filed for divorce that same week. He was certain that I would be so devastated that I would be unable to fight.
I did not fight.
I left with only my professional license, my name, and a small copper-colored memory card on which I had stored copies of the financial records. I carried the card for years in an old leather wallet. Marcus had no idea that I had copied everything from his company’s accounts.
Sometimes leaving is not surrender.
Sometimes it is simply giving time to those who are preparing a rope for themselves.
Marcus came closer to me.
“You know what is funny, Evelyn? Chloe and I bought a house in Weston. My company is growing. Everything turned out the way I wanted.”
“I’m glad.”
Irritation appeared on his face. He needed my anger, but I was no longer giving it to him.
Then he smiled and uttered the phrase he had probably been saving for five years.
“Leaving you was the smartest decision of my life.”
Chloe giggled.
At that moment, the quick sound of little shoes rang across the marble floor.
“Mommy!”
A four-year-old girl with curly dark hair and silver shoes darted through the guests and flew straight into my arms.
“Emma, slowly,” I told her with a laugh.
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
“Daddy and I were looking for you everywhere!”
The noise in the hall immediately fell silent.
Marcus first looked at Emma, then at me, and then watched the tall man approaching behind me. The man held Emma’s little shoes in one hand.
Julian Rhodes.
Everyone in Boston’s financial world knew him. His investment company was negotiating the purchase of Marcus’s business.
Julian kissed me on the forehead.
“So you’re here.”
The glass trembled between Marcus’s fingers.
“Evelyn… you married Julian Rhodes?”
I settled Emma on my hip and looked at the man who had once told me that I would be nothing without him.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Marcus’s smile disappeared.
But this was only the beginning. Julian took a small black folder from his pocket and looked toward Marcus. Chloe immediately noticed the change in his face and grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, what’s happening?”
Julian said calmly:
“There is one matter we need to clarify this evening.”
The folder’s clasp opened, while my hand, pressed against the memory card hidden in the old leather wallet, involuntarily went cold. Julian still had one document to take out and was already reaching toward it when…
Julian’s hand stopped inside the folder.
“Not here,” I said quietly.
“Why?” Marcus immediately exploded. “Does this woman want to create drama again?”
“Lower your voice,” I told him.
Chloe looked around. The guests were no longer dancing. Emma’s head rested on my shoulder, and her silver shoes touched my dress.
Julian closed the folder.
“We will meet in my office tomorrow morning, Marcus. There, no one will escape answering.”
“You are buying my company and now using my ex-wife?” he roared.
“I am using no one,” Julian answered calmly. “You simply do not know whom you are facing.”
Marcus bent toward me.
“What do you have?”
The smell of wine and fear mingled in his breath.
“What you left behind five years ago,” I said.
That night, in the empty hotel corridor, Julian explained everything to me. His audit team had discovered unusual outflows of money in Marcus’s company. The funds were connected to the same accounts whose copies I had.
“Marcus does not know that the records are with you?” Julian asked me.
“No.”
“Then tomorrow he will find out for the first time.”
When I entered the office in the morning, the secretary handed me a white envelope. On it was written only one sentence: “This account is in your name, but the child will no longer remain on your side.”
Below lay a copy of a four-year-old child’s birth certificate.
I stared at the sheet.
The father’s field on Emma’s birth certificate was blank. But someone already knew this truth…
The copy of the birth certificate slipped from my hand and fell onto the marble floor. It was nine in the morning in Julian’s office. Beyond the windows, the Boston sky was filling with heavy rain, while the coffee cup on the table trembled as though my hand were still touching it.
“Who sent this?” I asked.
The secretary shook her head.
“A courier left it. His face is not visible on the cameras.”
Julian picked up the envelope with a glove.
“Marcus could not have gotten this far. Someone wants us to suspect each other.”
At that very moment, the door opened. Marcus, Chloe, and his lawyer entered the room. Marcus no longer had the previous night’s arrogance. His tie was loosened, and dark circles had appeared beneath his eyes.
“You will never talk about Emma again,” he told me.
“You brought up this subject yourself,” I replied.
Chloe looked at me awkwardly.
“Marcus said the child is yours and Julian’s, but you were hiding her from everyone.”
“That is only half the truth,” Julian said.
He switched on the screen mounted on the wall. Marcus’s company tax records, bank transfers, and forged signatures made in my name appeared there.
Marcus grabbed the chair.
“This is forged.”
“Then here is the original,” I said, taking the copper-colored memory card from the old leather wallet.
Silence fell over the room.
Five years earlier, when I found Chloe in the kitchen, Marcus had transferred part of the company’s money to other accounts that same night. I saw everything because his computer had been left open. On the card I had stored not only the transfers, but also his voice messages.
Julian played the recording.
Marcus’s voice sounded:
“Evelyn understands nothing. Let’s empty the joint account, then I’ll say in court that she squandered the money herself. After having a child, her career will be over anyway.”
Chloe covered her face with her hand.
“You told me this?” she asked in a whisper.
“This is taken out of context,” Marcus shouted.
“Shall we listen to more?” I asked.
In the second recording, he told Chloe that after leaving me he would delete all documents about Emma and, if necessary, use the child against me.
I was sitting on the chair, but inside it was as though the cold kitchen from years ago had come alive again. There was only one difference: this time I was no longer alone.
Marcus lunged toward Julian.
“You cannot use this. I will take your company to court.”
“You can try,” Julian replied. “But first look at this.”
The final audit conclusion appeared on the screen. Money was being transferred from Marcus’s company into Chloe’s name. Among it was the money with which they had bought their house.
Chloe looked at Marcus.
“You told me it was a bonus.”
For the first time, Marcus could say nothing.
That day the truth was revealed, but Julian’s phone immediately rang. He listened for several seconds, and his face changed.
“The police found the person who sent this envelope,” he said.
“Who?” I asked.
Julian looked at Marcus.
“Your father. And he says he has another file from Marcus, one that was hidden before Emma’s birth…”
