When I entered the house, I found my eight-year-old daughter on the floor, while my husband was holding a leather belt and was about to hit her again.
“Pay ten thousand dollars or both of you get out of this house!” Julian was shouting.
At his feet lay shreds of a green dress decorated with thousands of shining stones. Serena, the owner of the dress, stood at the door of our bedroom and dried her eyes with a dry handkerchief. Her face shone not from crying, but from satisfaction.
I saw a red mark on Lily’s back.
At that moment, every sound in the house disappeared. I heard only the ticking of the old wall clock and the clinking of the keys that fell from my hand onto the floor.
“Touch her one more time and I will call the police,” I told Julian.
He snorted.
“The police? You? You have no money, no family, and not even half of this house belongs to you.”
“Mommy…” Lily barely whispered.
I took off my jacket, wrapped it around her shoulders, and picked her up. Her small fingers clasped around my neck. Her skin was cold, despite the fact that a fireplace was burning in the room.
“This little monster attacked my dress in the hallway,” Serena said. “Julian, you must teach children about their actions.”
I entered Lily’s room and locked the door.
I brought ointment and water into the bathroom. As I treated her back, the child flinched at every touch, while I clenched my teeth so hard that my jaw hurt.
“I didn’t do it, Mom,” she said quietly. “I really didn’t do it.”
“I know, my life.”
“I was standing in the hallway. Serena was arguing with Dad. Then she grabbed your sewing scissors and cut the dress herself.”
The ointment froze in my hand.
“Are you sure?”
“She saw me. Then she told me that if I made a sound, Dad would punish me even more severely.”
There was such fear in Lily’s eyes that an eight-year-old child should not have known.
“Go to sleep,” I whispered and kissed her forehead.
When her breathing calmed, I went to the window. Julian’s black car stood in the yard, raindrops trembling on its hood. For nine years I had lived as if the past no longer existed. Julian thought I was a poor, orphaned, and completely helpless woman.
He was wrong.
In the corner of Lily’s room, under a wooden toy box, I had a small copper sewing case. It held not needles and threads, but an old satellite phone. Engraved on the phone’s cover was our family coat of arms — two intertwined oak branches and a black bird.
I had not touched it for nine years.
Five protected numbers lit up on the screen. My brothers.
The first had a financial empire, the second held a military rank, the third had such a reputation that people even avoided pronouncing his name, the fourth was a federal judge, and the fifth was the invisible ruler of technological networks.
By running away from them, I had given Lily an ordinary childhood.
Now Julian had destroyed that childhood with a belt.
I wrote only four words: “They touched our blood.”
I pressed my finger on the send button.
From below came the sound of a champagne bottle being opened. Julian and Serena were probably celebrating, because they thought I was still afraid of him.
The first reply appeared on the phone’s screen: “Where are you?”
The second: “Is the child safe?”
The third was not a word at all. Only coordinates.
Julian’s fist struck the door.
“Elena, come downstairs in ten minutes!” he roared. “Otherwise I will throw you out of Lily’s room too.”
I put the sewing case on the table. Just then, the sound of unfamiliar cars’ engines came from below, and blue light flashed by Lily’s window.
The phone lit up again.
“Do not open the door. We are already in the house.”
Julian’s steps stopped in the hallway. I turned toward the lock, because someone outside put a hand on the handle…
The handle slowly went down.
“Elena, open the door!” Julian shouted.
For the first time I heard fear in his voice, but I still did not open the door. Lily stood behind me, pressing her sleeping toy to her chest. One ear of her cotton rabbit was stained with blood.
A strange man calmly said from the other side:
“Mrs. Vance, we are your brothers’ people. The child is no longer in danger.”
Julian immediately began shouting:
“Nobody is coming in here! This is my house!”
“No,” I answered for the first time throughout the whole evening. “It isn’t anymore.”
I opened the door.
Three men dressed in black stood in the hallway. Behind them, Serena, in a white robe, had frozen. The champagne glass fell from her hand onto the floor and broke into tiny fragments.
One of the men looked at Lily.
“The doctor is waiting for you in the car. A police team is also on the way.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Do not interfere in my family matter!”
“Family matter?” I asked. “Repeat those words in court too.”
He waved his hand at me, but his guard grabbed his wrist.
My brothers’ messages kept arriving one after another. The company accounts had been frozen. A new restriction appeared in the real-estate registry under Julian’s name. However, this turned out to be only the beginning.
The doctor examined Lily’s back and quietly told me:
“The injuries are from blows. Everything must be documented.”
Serena turned her face away.
“The child made up this story herself.”
Lily lowered her head. I clasped her hand.
At that moment, the youngest bodyguard took out his phone.
“Ma’am, we found the camera recording. But there is one problem. The recording shows that Serena is not the only one.”
“Who else is there?” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me, although he had not started the video yet.
“The person who planned all this is going to leave this house together with your husband…”
The recording started on the screen, and everyone in the room held their breath.
The video showed the hallway. The time was seven forty-nine in the evening. Lily stood by the stairs, holding her cotton rabbit in her hand. A few seconds later Serena appeared. She took my heavy scissors from the sewing table, spread the dress on the bed, and cut it herself.
Serena stared at the screen.
“This is fabricated.”
“You have not heard the sound yet,” the bodyguard told her.
Serena’s voice was heard in the recording:
“Julian, if you do not throw this woman out of the house, I will tell everything.”
Julian entered the frame.
“What are you threatening me with?”
“Your financial accounts, Mr. Hales. And also the fact that I found Elena’s true identity.”
Julian stopped.
My heart struck hard once.
“Don’t you dare,” he said in the recording.
“Then put the blame on the child. You always lose your patience easily.”
Serena threw the dress onto the floor. Then she looked toward the camera and saw Lily.
“If you tell anyone, your father will punish you so that even your mother will no longer be able to help you.”
Silence fell over the room.
Julian looked at the screen, then at Lily.
“It was only a conversation.”
“And the belt?” I asked.
He could not answer.
The police officer played the recording again. This time, a voice recording taken from my phone was heard. Julian’s voice was clearly audible: “Thirty blows are too few. Ten thousand dollars must be in my account tomorrow morning.”
Serena stepped back.
“I did not know the cameras were working.”
“That is exactly your problem,” I told her. “You thought only I was listening to you in the house.”
Then Julian’s lawyer called him. He listened for several seconds and lost the color in his face.
“What are they saying?” Julian asked.
The lawyer answered in a cold voice:
“The purchase of your company has been completed. The buyer is the Vance Group.”
Julian slowly looked at me.
“The Vances… is that your family?”
For the first time, I did not hide the truth.
“Yes. And they are already on the way.”
At that moment, the sound of heavy cars came from the yard. I went to the window and saw five vehicles. In the middle, my eldest brother, Alexander, got out.
Julian leaned his hand against the wall.
“You told me that you were an orphan.”
“You never asked why I was afraid to mention my family.”
The police officer put handcuffs on Serena. Julian was still looking at me when I received a message from my brother: “Elena, this is no longer only a family matter. We found out why Serena wanted you to disappear.”
The next message was even shorter.
“Her plan also included kidnapping Lily…”
