I Found My Ex-Wife in the Rain with Three Children, but When She Heard My Question, the Color Left Her Face

At the moment when I saw my ex-wife with three small children in the Chicago rain, I had an engagement ring in my pocket and another woman was waiting for an answer from me.

I was walking along Michigan Avenue. It was seven o’clock in the evening, and the cold October rain was striking the sidewalk as if all the windows of the city had shattered at once. Amelia was waiting for me at the restaurant. Candles had been lit on the table, and for a whole week I had been preparing the words with which I would propose marriage to her.

Then I saw Grace beside a cracked bus shelter.

Her thin black coat was completely soaked. Three small children stood at her feet, all three wearing identical red raincoats. Grace was holding them so tightly to her, as if she was afraid someone would take them away.

I suddenly stopped, and a man coming from behind collided with my shoulder.

“Excuse me,” he said to me, but I could no longer hear his voice.

Grace turned around.

“Ryan…”

She pronounced my name as if all three years of fear stood behind it.

She pulled the children closer. Then the boy raised his head.

He had my eyes.

No, eyes that merely resembled mine. Exactly my gray-blue eyes. The same slightly slanted gaze that I had seen in the mirror for thirty-eight years.

The girl on the left had Grace’s soft features. But the second girl smiled as stubbornly as my father did in photographs from his youth.

My hand found the small velvet box in my coat pocket by itself.

“How old are they?” I asked.

Grace looked at the street.

“Three.”

That one word stopped my breathing. It had been almost exactly three years since our divorce.

Suddenly I remembered her tired face, the nights when she cried and I blamed it on work stress, her request that I not leave on another business trip.

I went anyway.

Every time.

“Grace, are they mine?”

Her fingers tightened around the boy’s raincoat.

“Now is not the time.”

“Where were they for three years?”

“You didn’t ask.”

That answer pierced my heart like a knife.

“I thought we didn’t have children.”

“You thought many things, Ryan.”

The bus appeared from around the corner. The screech of its brakes exceeded the sound of the rain.

“We have to go,” she said.

“No. Explain first.”

Grace looked at me for the first time. There was no anger in her eyes. Only exhaustion and the kind of fear a person carries when they have already had to run away too many times.

!!!  Mi abogado anunció que mi esposa ya no era mi esposa, y cuando pregunté dónde estaba, dejó de mirarme

“I have already lost too much.”

The boy climbed the steps, but stopped on the last one. He turned around and looked at me again.

My eyes.

The bus door closed. I did not strike the window with my fist. I simply stood and watched the red raincoats move away behind the curtain of rain.

My phone vibrated.

Amelia was asking where I was. Everyone was already waiting for her.

I took out the ring box and placed it on my palm. A few minutes earlier it had been a symbol of my future. Now it looked like a foreign object.

Amelia was no longer the main thing. The restaurant no longer existed. Before me stood only one question: why had Grace hidden her own children?

I ran to the car and followed the bus. Several streets later it stopped at a children’s medical center.

Grace went inside with the children.

And then I realized that the existence of three children was not even her greatest secret.

I approached the glass doors. Inside, Grace was speaking with a woman in a white coat, while the boy sat in a chair with a small plastic bracelet on his chest. Just then a familiar voice sounded behind me.

“You shouldn’t have come here, Ryan.”

I turned around. My father’s lawyer was holding a brown folder. He opened the clasp and reached to take out the first sheet…

The edge of the folder trembled between his fingers. I had never seen the lawyer, Daniel Hart, so frightened.

“You knew?” I asked.

“I only bring documents.”

“Are the three children mine?”

Daniel did not answer me. That silence made everything heavier.

Behind the glass, Grace was talking to the doctor. The little boy was holding his chest and counting his breathing. The girls sat silently on either side of him.

“Did my father send you?” I asked.

Daniel pressed the brown folder to his chest.

“Your father told me you would not come here.”

“Why?”

“Because if you saw the children, his plan would collapse.”

“Which plan?”

He opened the door, but stood in my way.

“You must hear this first. After that, you will no longer be able to return to the life that is waiting for you at the restaurant.”

My phone vibrated again. It was Amelia.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Answer it,” he told me. “And tell her you will not come today.”

“I will decide for myself.”

“No, Ryan. Three years ago, others decided instead of you too.”

He opened the folder. My signature was visible on the papers, but I had never signed it.

A doctor came out into the hallway.

“Mr. Mercer, are you the child’s father?”

Grace lowered her eyes.

Daniel locked the door and said quietly:

“Before you answer, you need to know who took them from you…”

Daniel’s last words were still hanging in the air when I opened the door and looked at the doctor.

“Yes,” I said. “If these children are mine, I am their father.”

Grace closed her eyes. As if she had been waiting three years for this answer and was still afraid to hear it.

The doctor took us into a small room. Drawings of colorful animals hung on the wall, and a plastic cup full of candies stood on the table. The boy, Luka, sat on the bed. The girls stood beside him and held each other’s hands.

“The test results have arrived,” the doctor said. “Genetic testing confirms that you are the father of all three children.”

I heard the words, but the room seemed to move far away.

“All three?” I asked.

“All three.”

Grace grabbed the chair.

“I wanted him to know,” she said. “But your family did everything so that you would not find out.”

“My family?”

Daniel took a second sheet from the folder and placed it on the table.

“This is a letter that was sent in your name three years ago. As if you had abandoned Grace, refused the children, and did not want contact with them.”

I looked at my signature. The letters were mine, but I immediately noticed one small detail: in my surname, the last letter always leaned to the right. Here it stood to the left.

“I did not write this.”

“I know,” Daniel said. “Your mother admitted to forging the signature.”

Grace smiled bitterly.

“She told me that if I tried to return to your life, she would take the children away from me. She said that you were already creating another family and that I was only an embarrassing past.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I did. I left twenty-nine messages.”

Daniel handed me the phone. Old emails appeared on the screen. All of them were marked as read in my accounts, but I was seeing them for the first time.

“Did my father delete them?” I asked.

“Your father and mother did. Then Grace contacted the hospital lawyers, because Luka was diagnosed with a rare heart disease. The doctors needed genetic information, but she refused to look for you because she had received threats from the family.”

Luka raised his head.

“Are you my father?” he asked.

Those two words struck me more powerfully than any court verdict.

I knelt before him.

“If you let me, I will be.”

The boy held out his hand to me. His fingers were cold.

“Mother said you have good eyes.”

Grace began to cry. I looked toward her, but she shook her head.

“Do not forgive me yet,” she told me. “First learn everything.”

Daniel placed a small memory device at the bottom of the folder.

“I took this from your father’s office. It is a recording of a conversation. It says why he hid the children and why he left you unaware of all this.”

We connected the device to the computer. After a few seconds, my father’s voice sounded.

“Ryan will never return to her. If Grace fights, we will use the children against her.”

Then I heard my mother’s voice.

“The main thing is that he sign the divorce. We will take care of the rest.”

My knees gave way.

At that same moment, the phone rang. My father’s number appeared on the screen.

“Do not answer,” Daniel said.

But the call ended and a new message arrived: “If you saw the children, Grace will be in prison tomorrow morning.”

Grace turned pale.

Daniel photographed the message, then went to the window and looked outside.

“This is already a threat,” he said. “But they do not yet know that the second copy of the recording reached the police before them…”
