Part 4 — For five years they told me that I was living in the house for free, but after one answer from me, my husband’s smile froze on his face

The lawyer ended the call and looked at the silence that had settled over the room.

“The document is a preliminary contract for the sale of an apartment,” she said. “In Marina’s name. As if she had given up her own land and savings to cover Oleg’s debt.”

“This is not my signature,” I said.

“We know. The signature was copied from an old bank application.”

Oleg picked up the phone.

“This is a misunderstanding. I will call my accountant.”

“We have already called him,” the lawyer answered. “He said that he received all instructions from you.”

Oleg dialed another number.

“Mother, tell me that you knew nothing.”

Galina Petrovna lowered her eyes.

“Enough, Oleg.”

“Now you have decided to keep silent?”

“I was silent for five years. I cannot anymore.”

Irina slipped toward the door. The lawyer blocked her way.

“Madam, you will stay here. This recording concerns everyone.”

“I did nothing!”

“You are on the recording.”

The color drained from Irina’s face.

The police came forty minutes later. It was raining outside, and water stood in puddles in front of the house. Oleg tried to call people who had stood beside him for five years, but not one of them even answered.

His lawyer finally deigned to come. He looked through the folder, listened to the recording, and took Oleg aside.

“I cannot defend this,” he told him.

“What does ‘you cannot defend me’ mean?”

“It means you must sign a statement and stop threatening everyone.”

For the first time Oleg heard himself through someone else’s mouth.

“Marina will pay anyway,” came from the recording.

The lawyer switched off the device.

“These are your words. You said them yourself.”

Oleg lowered his eyes. It was as if, for the first time after five years, he had seen the man who lived in the mirror.

I handed all the documents to the police. An investigation began into fraud and forged signatures. Oleg and Irina were taken for questioning, while Galina remained to give a statement.

That night I did not go upstairs to the second floor anymore.

My room was empty. I left only one jacket in the wardrobe. On the table lay my copper key, with its chipped piece of orange enamel.

In the morning I put it in my bag.

I took only three bags from the apartment. Over the years I had many belongings, but almost no life of my own.

Two weeks later I bought a small apartment at the other end of the city. It had a sunny kitchen, a narrow balcony, and trees visible from the window. For the first time I myself hung a rack on the wall.

I hung the key on it.

The workshop share was returned to me by court decision. The land money also remained safe. The forged-document case continued separately, while Galina Petrovna admitted everything in court. I did not restore my relationship with her, but I did not hate her.

I simply could no longer live at the price of someone else’s fear.

Three months later I started working at an accounting firm. In the mornings I brought my own coffee. During the break I sat by the window and did not ask anyone whether I was allowed to be there.

One evening Irina wrote to me.

“Let’s talk. Everything was not as it seemed.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“You may be right. But my life is no longer a place where you can prove it.”

Oleg called me the next day.

“Marina, I am losing the house. The trial is not finished yet. Help me and then I will explain everything.”

“You have nothing left to explain.”

“But we were together for five years.”

“That is exactly why I know that this call is not a request for help, but an attempt to bring back the old life.”

!!!  A férjem hálószobánkban vallotta be, miért vett el, de reggel egyetlen üzenettől elsápadt

“Do you still love me?”

I knew the answer to the question, but saying it aloud was difficult.

“I loved you once. But now I choose myself.”

I ended the call.

Six months later the first snow of winter came. In the kitchen of my small apartment, the walls shone white. A new accounting book lay on the table, and basil had grown in a pot on the windowsill.

My neighbor’s daughter, little Nino, who had come to visit me, drew a house on a sheet of paper. The house had a large yellow door, and beside it stood a little woman.

“Is this you?” I asked.

“No, this is the woman who returned home,” Nino answered.

Her words remained in my heart more deeply than any verdict.

That evening I took the key down from the rack. I held it in my hand and stood by the window. The streetlamps were disappearing into the snow. For the first time in five years I was not afraid that someone would open my door and tell me how much I deserved.

This door was mine.

This silence was mine too.

And when the small piece of orange enamel flashed in the light of the snow, I realized that at last I had found the right lock for the key.

This time the door opened only for me.

Missed the beginning?
