I Found My Silent Daughters Singing When I Came Home, but One Whisper Made My Protection Lose Its Color

That day, when I returned home, I found my three silent daughters singing in the kitchen — and their next whisper frightened me as much as a stranger’s weapon.

I returned six hours earlier than they expected. Someone else’s blood was drying on my coat sleeve, while the weapon hidden at my waist touched me with every step. People in my house lowered their voices when I entered. But that evening, children’s singing could be heard from the hallway.

“You are my sunshine…”

The voice was uneven, but real. I stopped. Then Nora continued with laughter:

“You make me happy when the sky is gray!”

It was as if my heart had been made to work in my chest for the first time.

It had been fourteen months since Olivia, Sophie, and Nora had stopped speaking. They did not mention their mother, hunger, or fear. Isabelle was killed in front of the kindergarten, on a bright Wednesday morning, when autumn leaves flew between the cars. And from that day I had been trying to rebuild life for my children.

I brought psychologists. I hired specialists. I filled the rooms with gifts, rented a seaside house, canceled meetings. Nothing worked.

Their silence proved stronger than me.

I stopped at the kitchen door. Olivia was sitting on the table and swinging her legs. Sophie’s hands disappeared inside a large apron. And Nora had climbed onto the shoulders of a young woman and was laughing, her curly hair falling onto her cheeks.

This was Grace Bennett, the new housekeeper who had come two months earlier. Twenty-nine years old, calm, observant, almost silent. I had spoken with her only seven times.

“Mr. Romano, you returned early,” she told me.

My bag fell onto the floor. The singing stopped immediately.

“What is this?”

Grace knitted her brows. Shame appeared in me for the first time: this woman had managed what I could not.

Nora immediately hid in her lap. The small movement passed through my heart like a bullet.

“Sophie told me something,” Grace said.

“What?”

Sophie clutched her hand. Grace bent down and did not demand an answer from the child. She simply waited.

I noticed the difference at once. Every specialist asked the children what they saw and what they felt. Grace left them the right to remain silent.

At last Sophie barely mumbled:

“That man is still in the house.”

The ticking of the clock sounded in the kitchen.

“Which man?” I asked.

Sophie did not answer me. Olivia went into the hallway, Nora followed her, and Grace looked at me as if she were seeing the real danger for the first time.

Isabelle’s picture hung in the library. Sophie went to the fireplace and took one frame from the shelf of photographs. It was Nora’s baptism photograph. I was standing beside Isabelle, and behind us were family members and my most trusted people.

Sophie pointed out one face.

Thomas Vescari.

For twenty-three years he had managed my money, companies, and property. He had stood at my wedding. He had come to the hospital at the birth of every daughter. He had the side-door code.

“He was there,” Sophie whispered.

“Where?”

“With Mother.”

“What did he do?”

Grace told me sternly:

“Mr. Romano, do not force the child.”

I knelt down. Men usually stood when they saw me; now I was speaking to my daughter from the level of her eyes.

“You do not have to say anything, Sophie. I swear.”

She watched me for a long time.

“He made Mother cry,” she said at last.

At that moment footsteps sounded beyond the door. Someone was coming toward the library. Grace took my hand and brought a finger to her lips. And I saw Olivia reach toward a thin folder hidden behind the shelf…

Olivia’s fingers touched the folder, but the door opened and Thomas Vescari entered.

“Dominic, you have returned?”

His usual smile sat on his face. He held a leather bag in his hand, while the watch given to him by Isabelle shone on his right wrist.

“Why are the children in the library?” he asked.

Grace hid the folder under her apron.

“Sophie says you were here on the day Isabelle died,” I told him.

!!!  Mi exmarido bloqueó la sala de partos con una petición inesperada, pero al ver quién entraba dejó de sonreír

Thomas’s smile did not leave him, but his eyes hardened.

“The child is traumatized. Do not attach significance to such words.”

“Sophie has been silent for seventeen months. Today she spoke for the first time.”

“And you believe her?”

“I don’t know yet. That is why I am waiting for an answer from you.”

Thomas looked at Grace.

“Who is this woman?”

“The person who returned my children’s voices,” I said.

Suddenly the sound of car brakes came from outside. Grace ran to the window and turned pale.

“It is not your security car,” she said.

She opened the folder. Inside lay one small memory card and a sheet written in Isabelle’s hand.

Only one sentence was written on the sheet: “If something happens to me, seek the truth with Grace.”

Thomas saw these words and lost his composure for the first time.

“Grace Bennett is not your real name,” he said.

Grace locked the door.

“Now it is time for everyone to understand why I came to this house…

“Grace Bennett is not my real name,” she said and placed a small device on the table.

Night had fallen outside. Rain struck the library windows, while the wood in the fireplace crackled as if someone were breaking down the door from inside.

Thomas took a step forward.

“Dominic, do not listen to this woman.”

“One more step and I will call security,” I said.

“My money built the security.”

“But the house is mine.”

Grace pressed the device. Isabelle’s voice sounded in the room. Weak, frightened, but clear.

“If you are listening to this, Dominic, I probably was unable to speak with you. Thomas found out that I discovered the withdrawal of money from his accounts. For years he had been transferring money from the companies into his own firms. When I threatened that I would tell you everything, he told me that the children would disappear together with me.”

My hands began to tremble.

In the recording, a door opened.

Thomas’s voice sounded:

“You know that Dominic has not believed the truth from any wife. He believes only the person who is afraid.”

Isabelle answered:

“One day he will still have to choose.”

Then there was a blow, the fall of a chair, and children crying. The recording stopped there.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Nach dem Abendessen wurde ich ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert – doch als mein Verlobter den Arzt anlog, erstarrte meine Schwester

No one was breathing in the library.

Thomas shook his head.

“This is edited.”

“No,” Grace said. “The original is with a forensic expert.”

“Who are you?”

“Elena Moretti. I was a federal investigator. Isabelle left documents with me and told me that if she died, I had to go to your children.”

Olivia ran to me. For the first time in fourteen months, she took my hand.

“Dad, Mother said Thomas is bad.”

Sophie was crying. Nora hugged Grace.

I looked at Thomas.

“Did you kill my wife?”

“I did not kill her. I only hired a driver to frighten her.”

“Intimidation with a weapon?”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Everything went out of control.”

At that moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered the call.

“Dominic,” a man said, “if you want to know who helped make Isabelle disappear, come to the old harbor in the morning. Alone.”

The call ended.

Grace looked at the device and said quietly:

“I recognized this voice. That man is still alive…
