My husband was marrying my sister when my nine-year-old daughter took the microphone at the ceremony and everyone fell silent

On the day my husband was marrying my younger sister, nine-year-old Amelia stood up in the church and took the microphone as if she had been preparing her whole life precisely for this moment.

Several hours earlier, my mother had come to my house. It was ten in the morning, raindrops were striking the kitchen window, and Amelia’s small purple bag lay on the table. Next to the bag hung an old copper bell, which jingled lightly with every movement. I had sewn that bell onto it when Amelia turned five.

Mother took hold of the bag and immediately said to me:

“I hope you will not spoil Amelia’s celebration today.”

“I am not going there, Mom. Amelia will go by herself.”

“That is exactly the problem. The family must stand together as one. And you are punishing everyone with your resentment.”

Her words still hurt me, but they no longer surprised me. In the past months my family had blamed me so many times that I had even forgotten how to explain my own pain.

When Mother put Amelia’s coat on her, the child looked at me silently.

“Mom, can I really go?”

“You can, if you want. Your father turned out to be a bad husband, but he is still your father.”

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

“You will not be angry?”

“Never at you.”

She hugged me. The little bell hanging from her bag rang again. That sound startled me strangely, as if something in the house were saying goodbye to me.

Mother looked back from the threshold.

“At least today try to behave normally, Anna.”

The door closed, and suddenly such silence fell over the house that it seemed every room had stopped breathing.

Three small children curled up beside me on the sofa. It was two in the afternoon. Their favorite cartoon was playing on the television, and their feet touched one another under the blanket. I was looking at the screen, but I could not see anything. I imagined Ryan at the altar. I imagined my sister, Leah, in a white dress. I imagined my mother, who was probably smiling proudly.

We had spent thirteen years together. We had raised four children. I was expecting the fifth when one evening I returned early from the store and heard Ryan’s voice.

“Darling, we will meet at the hotel at the usual time. I will find Anna one more reason. She believes everything. She is a complete idiot.”

I stood in the doorway and could not breathe.

When he saw me, he was not even frightened.

“Are you going to stand like that for long?” he asked me.

“Who were you talking to?”

He shrugged.

“Leah.”

At that time I still did not know that my life had ended at that same moment. I did not know either that in a few weeks I would lose my fifth child and then receive an invitation to their wedding.

The telephone rang. My cousin Nino’s name appeared on the screen. I immediately understood that something terrible had happened.

“Anna, you have to come here. Right now.”

“Is Amelia all right?”

“She is fine, but… she stopped the ceremony.”

I jumped up from the sofa.

“What did she do?”

Nino’s breathing quickened.

“She took the microphone. Ryan is frozen. Leah cannot speak. Everyone is looking at your daughter.”

“What did Amelia say?”

For several seconds silence fell on the other end of the line.

“I cannot explain this over the phone. Come and see for yourself. Now she is handing something to the priest, and Ryan is moving toward her…”

I ran toward the door when Nino’s voice suddenly cut off, and the only thing I heard at the end was:

“Anna, do not let him touch that box…”

Nino’s voice cut off, but her last words had already remained in my heart. I took the car keys from the table and ran down the stairs so quickly that I struck my foot twice.

“Mom, where are you going?” my six-year-old son asked.

“To Amelia.”

On the way to the church the phone rang again. It was Mother.

“Go back, Anna. Your coming will make everything more difficult.”

“Where is Amelia?”

“She is safe, but your cousin incited the child.”

“What are you hiding?”

Mother hung up immediately.

People were standing in the churchyard. I found the door open. Ryan’s voice could be heard from inside.

“Amelia, give me the bag and everything will be over.”

“No, Father.”

“You do not understand what you are doing.”

“I understand very well.”

I rushed in. Amelia was standing near the altar, holding a small wooden box in her hands. Her copper bell was trembling.

Leah stood pale, while Ryan was approaching the girl.

“Anna, take your daughter away,” he told me.

Amelia pressed the box to her chest.

“Mom, you must listen first.”

The priest looked toward me and asked in confusion:

“Madam, should this recording really be played?”

Ryan turned pale.

“Nobody needs to play anything.”

Nino said quietly beside me:

“Inside the box is what was recorded that day.”

Amelia put her hand on the lid. Just then the church’s back door opened and a woman in a police uniform entered. In her hand was a sealed folder.

“Mrs. Anna, you also need to know why we have come…”

Her next words were heard by everyone…

“This folder was supposed to be opened only for the court,” the policewoman said, “but before we came here, the girl contacted us herself.”

Heavy silence fell in the church. Outside, rain struck the roof, while inside the only sound was the jingling of the copper bell attached to Amelia’s bag.

Ryan raised his hand.

“This is nonsense. A child cannot decide such matters.”

“The child did not decide,” the woman replied. “She only gave us a recording.”

Amelia looked toward me.

“Mom, may I?”

I knelt beside her.

“If you are ready, yes.”

She opened the wooden box. Inside lay a small recorder with a date written on it in my own handwriting. It was the day I learned about Ryan’s betrayal. At the time I thought I was preparing to throw away the things left in the house, but Amelia had hidden the recorder in that room. The child did not know what she was keeping. Later Nino explained it to her.

Amelia pressed the button.

Ryan’s voice rang out through the church.

“Anna deserves nothing. If she loses the baby, the divorce will be easier. I will also talk to the doctor so that he says she caused it herself through stress.”

Then Leah’s voice sounded:

“And if she still does not leave?”

“We will blame everything on her. The family will not take her side. Mother already agrees.”

Leah’s face collapsed in one instant.

“Ryan, turn this off.”

“This voice has been edited!” he shouted.

The policewoman opened the folder.

“The recording was examined by experts. The voice belongs to you. In addition, the folder contains extracts from hotel cameras, messages, and money transfers with which a false medical statement against your wife was prepared.”

Mother covered her mouth with her hand.

“I knew nothing.”

Nino smiled bitterly.

“You knew that Anna was being blamed for losing the baby, yet that same night you wrote to Ryan: ‘Everything will be over soon.’”

Leah collapsed onto a chair.

“I am pregnant,” she said quietly. “Ryan told me that it would not matter for our family.”

I looked at her and for the first time I no longer felt jealousy. Only weariness remained.

“You also made me lose a child, Leah. These words will change nothing.”

The priest took the ring from the table and put it back.

“This wedding will not take place.”

Ryan turned toward me.

“Anna, please, at least help me for the children’s sake.”

“I helped you for years. And you turned my pain into a weapon.”

The policewoman handed him an official notice. Ryan looked at the document and lowered his hand.

At that moment I thought the hardest part was already over. But my phone rang. The number was unknown. A woman on the other end said only one sentence:

“Mrs. Anna, we found the medical file of your missing child, and there is a signature in it that no one here has mentioned today…”

I leaned against the wall. Ryan saw my face and understood for the first time that stopping the wedding was only the beginning…
