On My Birthday, My Daughter-in-Law Hit Me, but the Jewelry Hanging Around Her Neck Suddenly Drained the Color from Her Husband’s Face

My daughter-in-law hit me in the dining room of her own house, while my husband stared at his plate as if none of this concerned him at all. It was eight o’clock in the evening. Candles were burning on the table, wine gleamed in the crystal glasses, and the children were counting the minutes while waiting for the cake for our anniversary.

Chloe’s hand was still hanging in the air. My cheek was burning.

“You have forgotten where your place is in this family,” she told me.

My twelve-year-old son pushed his chair back.

“Mom, are you all right?”

My little daughter took the cake knife in both hands and began to cry quietly. I looked at Greg. He was sitting directly opposite me, his eyes lowered to the plate, while his finger was tracing the wet ring of the wineglass.

“Greg,” I said calmly, “do you have something to say?”

He cleared his throat.

“Nino, now is not the time for this.”

That answer proved more painful than the blow.

At that moment I noticed for the first time the old sapphire necklace hanging around Chloe’s neck. The stone, set in a silver-colored frame, sparkled in the candlelight. Three weeks earlier, exactly six thousand five hundred lari—not dollars—had disappeared from our joint account. Greg had told me that a friend needed urgent legal help.

“Where did you get that necklace?” I asked Chloe.

Chloe wrapped her fingers around the stone and smiled.

“It is a gift. Do not interfere in your affairs.”

Greg raised his head.

“Nino, be quiet.”

I picked up the fork lying on the table, moved it aside, and dried my hands on the white napkin. Then I approached Chloe.

“A husband who does not dare to defend his wife does not deserve to remain a husband,” I told Greg.

The smile disappeared from Chloe’s face.

“And a husband who gives the family’s money to his sister for expensive jewelry is simply a coward.”

The blood drained from Greg’s face. He knew that I had understood.

Chloe raised her hand again.

This time I was faster.

The sound of my hand rang through the room louder than the clinking of the glasses. Chloe’s head turned to the side, while the children screamed simultaneously. I was not happy. I only felt that for the first time in eleven years, I had defended the boundary of my own body myself.

“Mom, let’s go,” my son told me quietly.

Upstairs, ten minutes later, I took a suitcase. My hand accidentally touched the small copper whistle hanging on the door handle—the children had given it to me years earlier and told me, if you ever lose us, call us. It had always hung there.

!!!  Part 4 — My husband did not buy shoes for our son, but suddenly turned pale when talking about the money he spent on himself

“I will take the children,” I told Greg.

He was waiting for me at the door.

“This house is my family.”

“I paid for every one of its walls too.”

“Where will you go?”

“Where my children will no longer be afraid of your silence.”

I took the children by the hand and left the house. A cold wind was blowing in the street, while my anniversary dress had a small spot of cake cream on its sleeve. Before getting into the car, I looked back. Greg stood by the window. Chloe was visible behind him, and the sapphire was still around her neck.

Eleven days later I went to the lawyer Arthur. His office was on the third floor of an old building in the city. A heavy folder lay on the desk, and beside it was the extract for our house.

“What do you want us to protect first?” he asked me.

“The children. The house. And then every transfer that went out of our accounts.”

Arthur turned the monitor toward me. For four years, small sums, seemingly by chance, had been transferred to the same account.

“Before I tell you about the strange part of the house extract, you must see whose secret life your work was financing,” he told me.

He moved the cursor to the recipient field.

My fingers gripped the edge of the desk when Arthur pressed the file-opening button…

Arthur’s finger stopped on the mouse. One name appeared on the screen, then a second and a third. All the transfers were going to Chloe’s account.

“For four years?” I barely said.

“Four years, seven months, and twelve days,” Arthur replied.

He took receipts out of the folder: a jewelry store, a private clinic, apartment rent, a kindergarten.

“This is not only about money, Nino. Greg also submitted several documents with your signature.”

“With my signature?”

“The handwriting expert has already confirmed that it is forged.”

I went to the window. Cars were moving below, while I felt as if the entire city were crumbling beneath my feet.

“What is wrong with the house?”

Arthur turned the extract around.

“Officially, another person is also recorded as an owner. But the most dangerous thing is that this record is only the beginning.”

At that same moment his phone rang. Arthur listened, his face changed, and he ended the call.

“Who was it?”

“The notary. He said that Greg is at your house now and is signing something.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Me puse un vestido rojo para una cita, pero el jefe de la casa me miró y dejó de sonreír

I ran toward the door.

“If he signs today, we may lose everything.”

Arthur picked up his coat.

“No, if he does not yet know what is on the last page of this folder. But we must see it…”

At Arthur’s last words I ran down the stairs. It was six in the evening, rain had settled over the city, and drops of water were striking one another on the windows of the old building. In the car Arthur placed the folder on his knees, while I was leaving the children with a female friend and for the first time felt that I had to put fear before them.

“If Greg is transferring the house, call the police,” I said.

“First we must prove that the document is forged. Then we need a temporary court order,” Arthur replied.

“And if he has already managed it?”

Arthur gripped the steering wheel more tightly.

“Then he will think he has managed it.”

When we arrived at the house, the light was on in the living room. Greg’s shadow moved behind the curtains. The notary was sitting at the table, while Chloe stood beside him and nervously touched the sapphire necklace.

“You should not be here,” Greg told me.

“This is my house.”

Chloe chuckled.

“It is not anymore.”

Arthur put the folder on the table.

“Before anyone signs anything, listen to this audio recording.”

He switched on a small device. Greg’s voice sounded in the room, clear and calm.

“You must not tell Nino anything. I control the money. Let us transfer the house into our names, otherwise one day she will take everything from me.”

Chloe’s voice sounded in the recording.

“And if she finds out?”

“She will not find out. She has the children and work. And I know how to make her believe that she is overly jealous.”

The recording ended.

Greg’s face froze.

“This was recorded illegally,” he said.

“Perhaps, but the documents speak louder,” Arthur replied.

He unfolded the extract and put his finger on the last page.

“Four years ago, Greg added a secret co-owner to the house ownership. Chloe.”

The color left Chloe’s face.

“I knew nothing.”

“You knew,” Arthur said. “The money received in your account covered the installments on this property. Greg forged a signature in your name and gave the notary a false statement as if you had agreed.”

I clung to the chair. For four years, another woman had lived as a co-owner in the house I had paid for. This was no longer only betrayal. It was the slow theft of my life.

!!!  Mi esposa exigió que aceptara su noche de fiesta o la dejara, pero al recibir mi mensaje su sonrisa desapareció

Greg came toward me.

“Nino, I will explain everything.”

“You have already explained it. With your voice.”

“Chloe needed help.”

“And me? What did I need?”

He found no answer.

Arthur took out his phone.

“Now I am calling the police. Forgery, fraud, and an attempt to illegally dispose of joint property.”

Greg suddenly looked at Chloe.

“You told me this was safe.”

Chloe stepped back.

“You said your wife would not get in the way.”

Their blaming one another suddenly sounded very far away to me. As if I had been in the same room for years, but only now had I first stepped out of their lie.

Arthur’s phone rang. He listened, then looked at me.

“The court has issued a temporary prohibition. Greg no longer has the right to leave the house or dispose of the property.”

Greg moved his lips but could not make a sound.

I thought that everything was over.

That night, when I returned with the children to the safe apartment, Arthur called me again. His voice was lower this time.

“Nino, we found one more thing. The transfers to Chloe’s account were not made only with your money.”

“Whose money was it too?”

After a silence he told me:

“Greg also took out a loan in your name. And tomorrow morning it is supposed to become active at the bank…”
