Part 4 — On the day of signing the divorce, my husband showed me the twins and said that he now had a real family — but his mother suddenly turned pale

The message from the unknown number was still flashing on the screen.

“If you reveal the truth about the children, a case will be opened against you.”

Below it was a photo of my office.

In the photo the door appeared closed, but my small copper ring hung on the handle. The ring that I removed only before important meetings.

Someone had been in my apartment.

“Call the police,” my lawyer, Nora, told me.

“Not yet.”

“Victoria, this is a threat.”

“I know. That is exactly why we must find out who is afraid.”

That same night I returned to the San Diego apartment. The hallway light was flickering. The door lock was not damaged from the outside, but inside, by the table, I found my folders scattered.

Bank statements were lying on the floor.

One sheet of paper had been torn in half.

Fortunately, I had stored the main documents somewhere else — in my parents’ old post office box, which only Nora and I opened.

The phone rang.

It was Christopher.

“Where are you?” he asked me.

“At home.”

“Mother ruined everything.”

“No, Christopher. You ruined everything when you forged my signature.”

His breath caught on the other side of the line.

“You do not know what you are saying.”

“Then tell the lawyer why the camera shows another woman signing a document in my name in your office.”

Silence.

“Victoria, let us settle this within the family.”

“You should have remembered family when you entered my home.”

“I did not enter.”

“Not you. But they were carrying out your order.”

He lowered his voice.

“Do not touch the children.”

“I am not touching the children. I am stopping the people who use them as inheritance objects.”

Christopher hung up.

Nora called me a few minutes later.

“The bank confirmed that the waiver document was submitted.”

“And?”

“The signature is forged. But this is still not the worst.”

“What else happened?”

“Millions of dollars have left the company accounts during the last six months. The money was transferred to a clinic, a private security company, and an offshore fund.”

I sat down on a chair.

!!!  PART 4 — I found my first love freezing in Central Park with three babies, and when my mother saw them, her smile vanished

I closed my copper ring in my palm.

“Who does the fund belong to?”

“Christopher’s father. Officially, however, to a company created one day before his death.”

The next morning Nora filed a statement with the investigative authorities. Evelyn handed over all the recordings. Daniel brought the testimony of a clinic employee, which said that Christopher’s father had been planning the birth of the twins for months and the transfer of the company shares to them.

Michelle initially refused to speak.

Then Nora told her:

“If you remain silent, it will not only be deception against you. Forgery of the children’s birth records will also be added.”

Michelle lowered her eyes.

“I wanted only one thing,” she said.

“Money?” I asked.

“Safety.”

“You took from me the person I trusted most.”

Pain passed over her face.

“I know.”

“No, you do not. You only know that now your lie has been exposed.”

An investigation began against Christopher. He was forbidden to access the bank, the company accounts were frozen, and his lawyer did not appear at the second meeting.

“I can no longer represent you in this case,” the lawyer told him when he left the office.

“I will pay you double.”

“It is no longer about money. You hid forged documents from me.”

“My family is falling apart!”

“Your family fell apart when you decided to write the truth on paper.”

The hardest day still came when Nora played me the recording prepared for the court.

Christopher’s voice sounded in the room.

“How good that Victoria has money. I will use her a little longer, and then I will tell everyone that she could not create a family.”

Then Michelle’s voice:

“If she cannot become pregnant, no one will accuse you of your betrayal.”

I heard my own marriage as if I were listening to someone else’s life.

But one phrase destroyed me most of all.

Christopher chuckled and said:

“She has nothing except papers.”

I stopped the recording.

“That is his voice,” I said.

Nora nodded.

“Yes.”

“And is all this enough?”

“It is enough so that no one can force you to carry their lie anymore.”

Several weeks later the court returned my company shares to me. The forged document was annulled. Christopher and Michelle were charged with financial fraud and document forgery. Daniel testified and took partial responsibility, but he did not give up on the children’s safety.

The twins temporarily stayed with Evelyn.

One morning she called me.

“Do you want to see the children?”

For the first time I could not answer.

“They are innocent of all this,” she told me.

“I know.”

That evening I went to her house. The boy still had the crescent-shaped mark on his left shoulder. The girl’s little fingers clasped my hand.

Christopher was not in that room.

Michelle was standing by the window.

“I will not be able to be a good mother for them,” she said.

“You do not yet know what kind of mother you will be.”

“Are you still speaking to me?”

“I am speaking to the children.”

For the first time she could not answer me anything.

Three months later I moved to San Francisco and opened a small consulting office. Now I helped other people’s companies so that they would not get lost in financial chaos. Every morning I heard the bell of the tram from the window and put coffee on the desk.

In the first weeks my hands trembled when signing.

Then they did not anymore.

Evelyn often sent me photos of the children. The boy was already trying to turn over, while the girl clung to everyone’s fingers. I no longer called them “Christopher’s children” or “his father’s children.”

They were simply children.

Their lives could still be built from truth and not from lies.

One evening, when the first snow fell outside, my phone rang again.

It was Christopher.

“Victoria,” he said, “I have lost everything.”

I stood by the window. Snow fell on the street lamps.

“I did not take this away.”

“You can say in court that it was a mistake at first.”

“It was not a mistake. These were decisions.”

“I still loved you.”

“Love does not force a person to forge someone else’s signature.”

!!!  Part 4 — My husband hit me six times and threw me out of the house, but when my father appeared, his face suddenly turned pale

He fell silent.

“Come at least once,” he asked me. “Just talk to me.”

“We have already talked.”

“And is that everything?”

“No. Everything is that now you will remain alone with your consequences.”

I hung up the phone.

Several days later Evelyn brought the children to me. The girl was holding a pencil, while the boy sat on the floor and drew strange, curved lines on a sheet of paper.

“What is that?” I asked.

He was still too small to answer, but he lifted the paper with both hands.

Three circles were drawn there and a large sun above them.

Evelyn smiled.

“It is probably his family.”

I put the paper on the table and looked at the old copper ring. It was still there, beside my new folders. Once I thought that I put this ring on my hand so that I would write important words correctly.

Now I understood that it reminded me of something else.

It does not matter how many times they convince you that your truth is nothing.

The trace left on paper still remains.

I put the ring on my finger.

Outside, snow was falling quietly.

This time I closed the door myself.

Missed the beginning?
