I hired a man who had been left a widower, but after one question from him, Elias’s face suddenly turned pale

That day, when a strange rider stopped in front of my door, it had been two days since I had eaten only flour dissolved in water and held an empty rifle in my hands.

The rifle was old, its barrel covered with rust, and the cartridges had been sold by my husband long ago. Still, I did not put it down. Sometimes it is not a weapon but its weight that gives a person strength.

“Who are you?” I asked, leaving the door half open.

The rider dismounted. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and his black beard had clotted like frost. A leather bag hung from the horse’s saddle, and beside it was a long whip. Until he came, only the wind could be heard; now the animal’s heavy breathing filled the whole yard.

“Elias Baragan. I bought a ranch nearby. I need a cook.”

“There is no cook living here.”

“I know. A widow lives here.”

His answer made my cheeks burn.

“If you came to ask for charity, you are standing at the wrong door.”

“I did not bring charity. I have work. A roof, food, and ten pesos a month.”

“In exchange?”

“You will take care of the kitchen. I will see that no one bothers you.”

“No one will give me orders as if I were a hired woman in a tavern.”

Elias looked at me for several seconds. There was no pity in his eyes. That was exactly what stopped me.

“Then the agreement is simple,” he said. “You make the food, and I will teach my men not to enter your room without knocking.”

An hour later I locked my hut. Into a sack I put the heavy cast-iron pan left by my mother, a brown wool blanket, and a small notebook that Tomas had hidden until his death.

My husband had been dead for five months. Fever took him, but until his death he did not explain why the house had remained unfinished, the land was full of stones, and the debts were incomprehensible to everyone. In town they said Tomas had lost the money in gambling.

But I knew that he was hiding something from me.

Elias’s ranch, Iron Pine, looked like an abandoned cemetery. Broken fences, muddy floors, plates hardened with grease, and three workers who looked at me as if I were an unnecessary thing in their lives.

“A widow cannot endure for long,” Candelario chuckled when I put down my pan.

“I am a widow,” I answered. “I have not become weak yet.”

Within a week the kitchen changed. In the morning there was the smell of coffee and cornbread, and in the evening meat stew was ready. Elias ate silently when he returned from the bars and ravines, but every time he cleaned the empty plate completely.

On the eighth day Candelario came in with muddy boots. He walked across the freshly cleaned floor and struck the table with his fist.

“Bring me agave, woman. I do not eat dry food.”

“Take off your boots first.”

“I obey the owner, not a widow brought in from the forest.”

His hand touched my wrist. I took the pan and struck his fingers with it. Candelario fell to his knees, screaming.

Elias stood in the doorway. Snow lay on his shoulder.

“Take your things and leave my land before sunset,” he told him.

“I was doing nothing wrong!”

“Ask your hands what they were doing.”

Candelario looked over at me as if promising revenge, but he saw something in Elias’s eyes and fell silent.

I returned the pan to the stove.

“You did not need to drive him away.”

“I know,” Elias told me. “That is why I let him go. Anyone who cannot respect a hungry person cannot guard my back.”

That night I began looking through the ranch’s books for the first time. The numbers did not match. They paid too much for food and sold the cattle far too cheaply. For three weeks I redid the accounts and reduced the losses.

Then November came.

Snow closed the valleys. Elias left with Mateo and Jacinto to search for the missing cattle. He did not return for two nights.

On the third morning they appeared. They brought Elias draped over the saddle, with a deep horn wound in his thigh. For seven days I cleaned the blood and placed a wet cloth on his feverish forehead.

One night he did not open his eyes, but he pronounced two names several times.

“Tomas… Aurelio Croft…”

The spoon fell from my hand. Croft was the moneylender who had pursued Tomas until his death.

I knew about a locked drawer in Elias’s office. When I found its key, inside I found one contract, drawn up several weeks before his arrival at my hut. I reached my hand toward the folder, but a floorboard creaked behind the door and someone quietly said…

“…You must not read that paper.”

I turned around. Mateo stood in the doorway, holding a lamp. The wind struck the glass, and his shadow split in two on the wall.

“What are you doing here?”

“Elias wanted to protect you.”

“Protect or hide?”

Mateo lowered his eyes.

“Croft will come tomorrow. He thinks that you paid the debt and that he must take the land from you.”

“Was it my husband’s debt?”

“Not the kind they say in town.”

Cold entered the office. My hand was still on the folder, but now I knew that I was not alone.

“Did Elias know my husband?”

Mateo did not answer.

Outside, a horse whinnied. Then a second one. I went to the window and saw two riders in the snow. One had a silver badge on his chest, and the other had Croft’s black hat.

Mateo told me in a whisper:

“If you open this folder, there will be no going back.”

“My life is already not going back.”

I lifted the lock. At that same moment the door downstairs slammed, and a man’s voice roared:

“Ines Salgado! I have come to collect the debt!”

I took the first sheet from the folder and…

…found such a document in my hands that for several seconds I forgot to breathe.

“What is this?” I asked.

Mateo brought the lamp closer. On the paper it said that Elias Baragan had bought the land of Iron Pine in the name of Thomas Salgado and had taken over from Aurelio Croft the right to collect the debt.

“He bought it in my husband’s name?” I repeated.

“Yes.”

Below, Croft was shouting again. Jacinto locked the door, but the lock shook with every blow.

I found a second sheet in the folder. It was Tomas’s handwriting.

“If I die, tell Ines that I did not lose the money. Croft kept the papers to my land and tried to forge my signature. Elias promised me that he would protect my wife, but reveal the truth only when Croft comes to his door.”

I held the paper so tightly that my fingers turned white.

“Did Tomas know that he would die?”

“He wrote it during the fever,” Mateo told me. “Elias was his old companion. Together they transported cattle toward the border. Croft deceived him in one deal, and then wrote a debt against him.”

Elias, lying on the bed, suddenly opened his eyes.

“Enough, Mateo.”

His voice was weak, but the room immediately fell silent.

I went toward him.

“How long have you known me?”

“Twelve years.”

“Then why did you deceive me?”

Elias turned his face toward the wall.

“Because Tomas asked me to find you a peaceful home. If you knew that I had documents against Croft, that man would watch your every step.”

“You bought my land, paid my debt, and still gave me work as a stranger?”

“I did not want your pity.”

“But I wanted the truth!”

My own voice frightened me. Elias closed his eyes.

“The truth sometimes leaves a person more alone than a weapon.”

At that moment the door opened. Croft entered with two armed men. Snow lay on his hat, and in his hand he held a folded seizure order.

“This land is in my name,” he said. “The widow must leave by morning.”

I put Tomas’s letter on the table.

“Then read this too.”

Croft looked at the paper, and for the first time his face changed.

Elias tried to rise from the bed.

“Aurelio, this time you will not frighten anyone.”

Croft chuckled, but the laugh came out soundless.

“One letter means nothing.”

“Not the letter,” I told him. “This folder also contains your signature. And the town notary’s seal.”

Croft took a step backward. Just then the sound of a horn came from outside. Horses stopped in the ranch yard. Mateo rushed to the window, looked out, and his face changed.

“Ines, people have come from town. But another man is standing with them. He says he has a criminal case against Elias and…”
