My Night Shift Was Canceled and I Returned Home Unexpectedly, but the Words I Heard Behind the Door Silenced Them Both

My night shift was canceled at nine twenty in the evening, and I returned home with sweet bread and a bottle of non-alcoholic wine to make my husband happy. When I opened the door, first I heard Paula’s laughter, and then her quiet voice.

“Every time you find a new way to make me feel special,” my best friend was saying.

Esteban laughed.

“I think about you even when I am with her. You are the life I should have chosen.”

I leaned against the wall. The bottle of wine I was holding weighed down my fingers as if all seven years of my marriage had been poured inside it. Then the sound of a kiss was heard.

I did not enter the room. I did not cry either. I put the keys on the small wooden shelf in the hallway and quietly went outside. It was raining. And I thought about only one thing: they knew all my shifts.

I was a doctor, and Paula worked in the hospital administration. Esteban was an anesthesiologist. Only a few people could change my schedule. Their relationship had not been accidental. It had been built around my working hours.

That night I could not sleep until dawn on an iron bed in the hospital rest room. In the morning I wrote to the chief doctor that I needed time, then I returned to the apartment when Esteban was at work. I took two bags: clothes, documents, and my small medical bag, with a yellow wooden bead hanging from its handle. My mother had given me this bead before my first shift.

I took nothing else.

I went by bus to San Jacinto del Río, into the mountains, where Aunt Leonor had left a small clay house. Almost no one knew the address. The house had a leaning lemon tree, an old tile roof, and dust that had settled in the rooms.

For the first days I only cleaned and slept. My neighbor, Mrs. Mercedes, brought me beans.

“I will not ask you anything, child,” she told me. “When you want, you will tell me yourself.”

This simple kindness made me cry more than any sympathy.

Two weeks later, shortly before dawn, Mercedes knocked on the door.

“My granddaughter has been vomiting for hours. She is very pale. Please, do something.”

I looked at the medical bag. The yellow wooden bead swayed quietly on the handle. I no longer wanted to be a doctor here. But the girl’s abdomen was hard, her fever was high, and the pain was on the right side.

“It is appendicitis. We must go to the hospital immediately.”

The road was blocked by the storm. Then Gabriel Navarro appeared, a widowed carpenter who drove the village’s shared vehicle.

“I will take her by the canyon road,” he told me. “It is a long road, but it is still open.”

In the car I gave the child an intravenous infusion, while Gabriel drove the whole way silently, gripping the steering wheel with both hands. We arrived in Jalpan in time. The doctors said that if we had been delayed a little longer, the child would not have survived.

On the way back Gabriel pointed to a locked building near the square.

“This was the village clinic. They have had no doctor for eight months.”

“I am not planning to stay.”

“I did not ask you to stay. I simply showed you the door.”

That evening six people were waiting at my house. One had an infected wound, another had high blood pressure, and a pregnant woman had not heard the baby’s heartbeat for several weeks. I wanted to say that I could not.

But I opened the medical bag.

Three months later the light came on again in the village clinic. The municipality offered me a six-month contract, and I agreed. Every day I became calmer, until one evening three sharp knocks sounded on the door.

Gabriel, who was standing with me at that moment, looked out the window and his face changed.

“Mariana, they are outside.”

“Who?”

He did not answer me. A black car stopped by the door. Its rear door opened and Esteban got out, holding a brown folder.

“Mariana!” he called. “Give me five minutes. If you do not sign, everything will be over…”

I could still hear Esteban’s voice, but I did not dare open the door. Gabriel took his place in front of me.

“You cannot force her to speak with you here,” he told him.

“This is a matter between husband and wife,” Esteban answered. “Do not interfere.”

Paula also got out of the car. In her hand I saw my hospital pass.

“Mariana, you only have to sign one statement,” she said. “You write that you left work that night of your own will and that the patient’s condition was not connected with your mistake.”

A coldness poured into my heart.

“Which patient?”

Esteban looked away.

“Do not complicate things. If you do not sign, the hospital will say that you abandoned your shift. You will lose your license.”

“My shift was canceled.”

“Can you prove that?” Paula smiled.

At that moment I understood why she knew my new address. This was not only betrayal. They were trying to protect my name from someone else’s crime.

“What is in the folder?” I asked.

For the first time Esteban looked at me.

“Only what can save you.”

I opened the door.

“Then come in and read it aloud.”

Paula put the folder on the table. Her fingers were trembling. When she opened the lock, I saw a small memory card among the papers…

The small card lay on the table under the yellow lamp. I immediately recognized the hospital archive mark. Esteban’s face became tense.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

“Sign the statement first,” Paula said.

“No. The truth first.”

Gabriel stood by the door, his hands clenched into fists. Esteban took a deep breath and sank into a chair.

“That night the patient was Otar Menabde,” he said. “After the operation he developed a strong reaction. I changed the medication dose, but in the record I used your doctor’s code.”

It was as if the air disappeared from the room.

“Why did you use my code?”

“Paula told me that you were on duty at that time. Everything seemed simple.”

“I was not there.”

“I know.”

His answer destroyed me more than hearing about the betrayal.

Paula covered her face with her hands.

“Otar survived,” she said quietly. “But the family filed a complaint. If the hospital learns that Esteban used your code, he will lose his license. And the administration will be hit by a scandal.”

“That is why you wanted me to sign, as if I had abandoned my shift?”

Esteban lowered his voice.

“I wanted both of us to survive.”

“No,” I told him. “You wanted yourself to survive.”

I put the card into the laptop. A hospital corridor appeared on the screen. The time was visible: nine twenty. I was coming out of the administration room, holding precisely that bag with the yellow bead. Then Esteban appeared on the screen. He entered my office, typed my password, and entered my code in the record.

Paula lowered her eyes.

“The camera was not supposed to remain in the archive,” she whispered.

“But it remained,” I said.

Esteban jumped up.

“You do not know what you are doing! If this spreads, everything will collapse.”

“You already destroyed everything when you used my name.”

At that moment my phone, whose number only two people had, rang. The name of the hospital director appeared on the screen. He briefly told me that Otar Menabde’s family had received new evidence and that in the morning they were beginning an official investigation.

But then the director added:

“Mariana, there is one more thing. We found a second record in the patient’s file. It is signed by a person who was not in the hospital at all that night. This person is not Paula.”

The color drained from Esteban’s face.

“Who is it?” I asked.

The director was silent for several seconds.

“Your husband’s father. And this morning he transferred all his property to a new foundation whose owner is you…”
