Part 4 — My Father Pushed Me at My Wedding and Mocked Me, but When Unknown Cars Stopped, His Smile Disappeared

I arrived in the hospital corridor when the nighttime hour had passed eleven. The white lights hurt my eyes, and the sharp smell of disinfectant stood on the floor.

Blake walked beside me. Daniel followed behind us and was already answering several calls on the phone.

“The prosecutor’s office received the materials,” he said. “Richard is trying to present everything as a family dispute.”

“And can he?” I asked.

“If there had been no camera recording, perhaps. But now, no longer.”

My mother lay in the ward. She had a small stitch on her forehead and a transparent medical bracelet on her wrist. As soon as she saw me, she lowered her eyes.

“I was told that I fell on the stairs,” I said.

“Richard pushed me,” she said quietly. “I tried to stop him all evening, but I was afraid again.”

This was the first complete truth I had heard from my mother about him.

“Where is the safe?”

Elizabeth slipped her hand under the pillow and took out a small brass key. On the head of the key, a swallow was painted with dark green enamel.

“In the old office,” she said. “Under your father’s office floor. He kept there everything he did not want us to know.”

That same night we went to the Sterling company building with the security group. My father’s heavy oak desk still stood in the office. Under the carpet, by the wall, a marble tile moved slightly.

Blake knelt and lifted the tile.

A small metal safe appeared below.

The key fit exactly.

There was no money inside. There were bank statements, false contracts, two passports, and a small recording device. Daniel picked up the last item.

“We will hand this over to the investigators today.”

We turned on the recorder.

My father’s voice sounded in the room.

“Claire will never cope with the company. If I cannot cover the debt, I will convince her that everything is her fault. People always believe words spoken against a weak woman.”

Then his laughter was heard.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Soțul meu mi-a cumpărat șase rochii, iar eu le-am returnat pe toate — până când zâmbetul unei femei a dispărut brusc

He was talking about my own life as if I were an object in the room.

Blake took my hand, but I did not cry. For the first time I heard what I had felt for years.

The recording continued.

“If necessary, I will silence Elizabeth too. She knows where the first money came from.”

My mother’s warning was hidden in this one sentence.

The next day, at seven in the morning, Richard sent a lawyer. He demanded that I renounce control of the company and return all the records.

The lawyer placed the documents on the table.

“Your father is ready for reconciliation,” he said.

“What does reconciliation mean to him?”

“You will sign that the statements were caused by an emotional condition.”

Daniel looked at him calmly.

“We will not sign this document.”

The lawyer cleared his throat.

“Then I cannot participate further in this case. I no longer trust my client.”

That same day Richard’s accounts were frozen. The company’s board of directors removed him from office, and the prosecutor’s office began an official investigation into financial fraud and violence.

His arrest took place three days later, not in the hotel garden, but in his own office. He was standing by the window and still giving orders on the phone when the investigators opened the door.

“Tell Claire that all of this is her fault,” he shouted.

I was there at that time.

I stood on the other side of the corridor and heard his words for the first time as a stranger would hear them. They no longer sounded powerful. It was only an empty, tired voice.

“I did nothing against you, Father,” I said.

He looked at me.

“You took my company away from me.”

“No. I saved what you took away from everyone.”

He could not find an answer.

Several weeks later Penelope wanted to see me. I met her in a small café where raindrops fell against the windows.

“I did not dare to defend you,” she said.

“I know.”

“Julian left.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich ließ meine Familie an Heiligabend wegen eines angeblichen Geschäftstermins allein, doch am Morgen verschwand jedes Lächeln aus meinem Gesicht

“I know.”

“Do you hate me?”

I slowly stirred the teaspoon in the cup.

“No. I simply will not wait for you anymore.”

My mother recovered and moved into a small apartment in the northern part of the city. For the first time she had her own key, which obeyed no one.

I took over the company, but my first decision was not to increase profits. I organized the debts, paid the employees’ salaries, and called the builders whom Father had deceived for months.

Blake left one room of his office for me. And every day I went to work at eight in the morning, drank black coffee, and watched the city rooftops from the window.

Our house was several streets away from the sea. On Sundays Blake prepared breakfast, while I watered the potted basil on the windowsill. Life did not become noisy.

It simply became mine for the first time.

Three months later the first snow came, although it was rare in the city. The streets were covered in white. That day my mother’s little grandson, four-year-old Luka, came to our house and drew me a picture on a sheet of paper.

In the picture, Blake and I stood by a house. Above us was a large sun, and beside us a small silver bag.

“Why did you draw this?” I asked.

Luka shrugged his shoulders.

“Because you are no longer afraid when you have the bag with you.”

It was a foolish sentence. Still, it struck me in the heart.

That same evening I received a letter from Richard. It was not sent from prison; it came from his lawyer’s office. On one page it said that he wanted to meet me.

“I am still your father,” it said at the end.

Blake held the letter in his hand.

“Do you want us to send an answer?”

I stood by the window. Outside, snow was quietly falling on the street.

“Yes.”

“What will you write?”

I took a pen and wrote only one sentence.

“You were my father, but I am no longer your solution.”

!!!  Part 4 — In the supermarket, my son pointed at an unknown woman and said that she had been playing in our bedroom — the woman’s smile disappeared

I sent the letter back.

I did not meet him.

Not when he wrote to me a second time either.

Not when Penelope told me that Father was ill and wanted to see me.

Some doors should open for forgiveness. And some should close so that the fear left inside can no longer get out.

One year later I returned to the garden of the same hotel. This time a small celebration for the company employees was being held there. The white roses were still there, but a new railing had been added around the fountain.

I had the silver bag with me.

On its corner, the small scratch left by the water that evening was still visible. For years I had planned to throw it away, but I could not get rid of it. It was no longer a mark of shame.

It was proof that I had come out of the water that night.

Blake held out his hand to me.

“Shall we go?”

I closed the bag and smiled.

“Now, yes.”

The water in the fountain sparkled under the sun.

I no longer looked back.

I came out of the water and took my life with me.

Missed the beginning?
