My Husband Put the Woman He Loved Among the Children on the Christmas Card, but a Call from the Printer Suddenly Changed His Face

A printing-house employee told me that another woman was listed as a family member on my husband’s Christmas card, while at that moment a twelve-foot Christmas tree was shining in my living room.

“Mrs. Carlisle, shall I read the names once more?” Marjorie from Whitman Printing asked me.

I stood barefoot on the marble floor and looked at the silver star that I had hung together with the children. My old surname was written on it — Ashford. For thirteen years, no one had called me by that surname aloud.

“Grant, Madison, Lily, and Noah,” Marjorie repeated quietly. “Do you really want that woman to be listed as family?”

The teacup in my hand froze as if winter had been poured inside it. It was no longer only Madison’s face that hurt. Lily’s hand in hers hurt, Noah’s scarf matching her clothes hurt, and the cutting of my name out of the family I had built hurt.

“Do not cancel the order,” I finally told her. “Print it exactly as Grant approved it.”

Marjorie fell silent.

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

That evening, at eleven forty-seven, Grant returned home. White lights, green garlands, and expensive silence made the war resemble a postcard. He straightened his tie and said:

“The calls with Dubai ran long.”

“Does Madison speak Arabic now too?”

I noticed only a small movement on his face. He poured a drink into the glass.

“I do not have the strength for this today.”

“You have strength for Madison. Just not for this.”

Grant looked at me as if I had accidentally entered a matter he had finished.

“The card was not supposed to be sent to you.”

That one sentence told me everything. He wanted everyone to see my replacement, only me — last.

“Maybe it is better this way,” he added. “Madison makes me happy. The children need stability.”

“Printing the beloved woman together with the children is stability?”

“She will be in their lives.”

Then he mentioned the prenuptial agreement, divorce, “reasonable behavior,” and a generous offer. Grant still thought obedience was my native language.

“Do not embarrass me, Vivian.”

I laughed, but only inside.

“I will not embarrass you, Grant. You have already done that yourself.”

The next morning Madison arrived in a white car with a red bow tied to its front. She was wearing my bracelet — the piece of jewelry that had disappeared from my husband’s safe.

“I need to speak to a woman as one woman,” she told me.

Then she looked at the children.

“Lily and Noah are adorable. We will soon be together often.”

Blood boiled in my ears, but I did not change my voice.

“Never speak about my children again.”

“Grant wants a future. Some stories simply end.”

Grant stood behind her and waited for me to shout. Instead, I placed the sample of the card on a silver tray.

“I think everyone should see what you call a family.”

When they left, I entered Grant’s office. In the bottom drawer of the old mahogany desk I found a folder that my lawyer had sent me six months earlier. Inside were bank statements, property records, travel expenses, and one page of our agreement — Grant had never understood it.

At the top of the page was the name of the company he trusted most: WinterSpring Capital.

And below stood a signature he could never have imagined seeing — mine…

I spread the folder’s papers across the desk. My hands were no longer trembling.

I thought WinterSpring Capital was Grant’s personal fund, but I had also signed on the day it was created. Only then had I failed to understand that legally not half of it, but the entire company, was in my name.

The telephone rang. It was my lawyer, Elene.

“Vivian, are you home?”

“In Grant’s office.”

“Do not touch anything. The court’s temporary order is coming now.”

“Does he know?”

“Not yet. And it must remain that way.”

The sound of car brakes came from outside the door. Grant had returned.

“Close the folder,” he told me when he entered the room. “This is my personal business.”

“Our marriage agreement is no longer personal.”

He snatched the paper from me. At that exact moment, someone knocked hard on the door.

Elene entered with two law-enforcement officers and a sealed folder in her hand.

For the first time, Grant lost his composure.

“What is this?”

Elene looked at me.

“Now you must tell him everything.”

I reached toward the folder, but Grant reached out too. Our fingers touched the sealed paper at the same time.

And then the telephone rang again. The number belonged to the director of the children’s school.

“Mrs. Ashford, someone met your children this morning. She told them that you would soon leave the house…”

The school director’s voice was still in my ear when I placed the sealed folder on the desk. It was ten in the morning, and in Grant’s office raindrops struck the windows as if someone outside were knocking with their fingers.

“Who went to the children?” I asked.

“Madison Bell,” the director replied. “She said she would soon become their new mother.”

Grant looked sharply at me.

“She was only calming the children.”

“No one will frighten my children in your place anymore,” I told him.

Elene opened the sealed folder. Inside were a certified copy of our marriage agreement, several bank documents, and one sheet on which Grant’s signature was clearly visible.

“Grant,” Elene said, “WinterSpring Capital was created with Vivian Ashford’s property. You were appointed manager, but she is the owner.”

Grant laughed. The laughter soon died.

“Impossible.”

“Possible,” I said. “The money from the sale of my father’s hotels went into this fund. You told me you were creating a family investment. I trusted you.”

“You only signed whatever I told you to sign!”

“That is exactly why you told me that everything meant nothing.”

Elene took out the second document.

“During the last three years, Grant paid for hotel apartments, jewelry, a car, and personal trips for Madison from the company’s accounts. These sums were designated as family expenses.”

Grant’s face turned pale.

“They were temporary loans.”

“A loan needs a repayment date and a contract,” Elene replied. “There is neither here.”

Madison, who was standing at the door, slowly entered.

“Grant, what does this mean?”

He looked toward her.

“Not now.”

“You told me everything was yours.”

“Everything will be mine.”

“It is no longer,” I said.

Such silence fell over the room that every tick of the wall clock could be heard. Grant picked up the card sample from the desk. The gold letters crumpled between his fingers.

“You will destroy this.”

“No. I simply will not protect you anymore.”

At that moment Elene’s phone rang. She listened, knitted her brows, and turned toward me.

“Vivian, the bank is calling me. Someone tried this morning to withdraw money from all of WinterSpring’s accounts.”

“Who?”

Elene looked at Grant.

“The order was accompanied by his electronic signature.”

Grant shook his head.

“I did not do it.”

Just then my phone lit up. The message from an unknown number contained only one sentence: “If you want to find out who gave the order, come alone to the Carlisle Hotel this evening…”
