A Few Minutes Before the Operation, My Husband Asked Me to Save His Mistress, but One Question from Me Changed Everyone’s Face in the Room

The doors of the operating block were already closing when my husband fell to his knees and asked me to give my liver to his mistress.

Chris was wearing the gray coat I had given him for his birthday. The small copper leaf sewn onto the collar by my fingers glimmered. At the time, I thought this detail was a sign of love. That evening, for the first time, it seemed to me that someone else’s life had been wrapped around the coat.

“She will die, Audrey,” he said, handing me the consent form. “Only you are a compatible donor.”

His knees wrinkled against the white floor, but there was no regret in his eyes. There was only fear. Not because of my fear. Because of his secret.

“Do you understand what you are asking me?” I asked.

“She has no time left.”

Those words sounded so familiar, as if the last six years of our marriage had fit into one sentence. When I was preparing for partnership at a law firm, I left my job to save Chris’s young technology company. At night I wrote contracts, calmed investors, and sold my own apartment when his company needed money.

After every sacrifice, he told me the same thing.

“Thank you, Audrey.”

I took gratitude for love. Now he was asking for my body in the same calm tone.

“You owe her her life,” Chris told me.

“What do you owe me?” I asked.

His jaw tightened. He had no answer.

At that moment, a message appeared on his phone. Madison’s name was written at the top of the screen.

“Did she agree?”

The message had been sent three minutes earlier.

My stomach froze, but my voice did not change. I folded the consent form and put it in my bag.

“I’ll take it home and look it over.”

“This is not your legal case!” he shouted. “A woman is dying!”

“I know exactly what this is.”

A month earlier, my liver enzymes had been elevated in my tests. The doctor had ordered additional examinations. Now the hospital document said that I was completely healthy and ready for surgery.

“Who approved these results?” I asked.

Chris looked away.

“Dr. Evans.”

The doctor whose malpractice case Chris had quietly settled the previous year.

“Did you alter my medical records?”

Chris turned pale.

“I had no choice.”

That was the most terrible answer. Not regret. Justification.

I left the hospital in the rain and entered a small diner on Capitol Hill. I drank black coffee and searched on my laptop for what he had hoped I would never be able to find.

In five minutes I found three patents. They were the most valuable assets of Chris’s company—ideas in whose creation I had participated. Two months earlier they had been transferred to a fictitious company called “Madison Biotech.” The address was Madison’s apartment. The owner was her father.

Then I entered Chris’s personal cloud storage. There I found correspondence with Evans: “You need to adjust the tests a little.”

Among the files there was also an ultrasound image. On the back, in Madison’s handwriting, it said: “Chris, this is our baby.”

The noise of the diner disappeared.

My husband wanted me to sacrifice my life for the woman carrying his child. But the hardest part was still ahead.

The next morning I returned to the hospital. Chris and Evans were already waiting for me. The doctor opened the folder.

“All the indicators are normal,” he said.

“What is my alanine aminotransferase level?” I asked.

His smile hesitated for half a second.

“Forty-two.”

“The previous result was eighty-seven.”

Chris held his breath.

I took a sealed legal folder from my bag and placed it on the table.

“I requested the raw laboratory data. An examination is being conducted now.”

The color left Evans’s face. Chris no longer looked at me like a frightened wife. He was looking at an opposing attorney.

That same evening my expert called me. His voice sounded strangely changed.

“Audrey, sit down. We have also received the paternity test results…”

I pressed the phone to my ear and stopped by the window. The rain left long, curved lines on the glass.

“Tell me,” I asked.

“First you should know that we tested the samples in an independent laboratory.”

“Who is the father?”

He was silent for a long time.

“It isn’t Chris.”

I leaned my head against the wall. It was as if I already knew these words, but they still struck me.

“Are you sure?”

“We checked twice. The child’s biological father is Dr. Evans.”

Only the low hum of the refrigerator could be heard in the room.

Madison had not deceived Chris only about the pregnancy. She had involved two men in one secret, and used my body to cover that secret.

“Send me everything,” I said.

“Audrey, there is still one thing. We found another document in the patient file. Issued in your name.”

“What document?”

“You need to see it. I cannot explain it in words.”

Half an hour later I was standing in the hospital archive. The sharp smell of disinfectant filled the corridor. The expert handed me a thin folder.

“It looks like your signature,” he told me, “but you did not sign it.”

I opened the folder. On the very first page my name was written, and beneath it, consent dangerous to life.

Footsteps stopped beyond the door.

I heard Chris’s voice.

“Audrey, open the door. We need to talk…”

I slowly opened the door. Chris stood on the threshold, and Dr. Evans stood behind him. Both their faces were tense, as if they already knew that there was no escape route left.

“Give me the folder,” Chris said.

“Why? You have already taken everything you needed for your plan.”

Evans lowered his voice.

“Mrs. Foster, this is a misunderstanding. The question of the child’s father does not concern the operation.”

“It concerns my health. It concerns my signature. And it also concerns why you falsified my tests.”

Chris stepped forward.

“Madison is dying!”

“No, Chris. Madison is dying because you arranged all this with her and, without my consent, regarded my body as a medical resource.”

He struck the table with his hand. The thin folder fell to the floor and the papers scattered.

At that moment my lawyer, Mira Patel, entered the room. Behind her stood the laboratory expert.

“Now we can say it aloud,” Mira said. “The liver results were altered. The raw data confirms it.”

Evans shook his head.

“I only rechecked the numbers.”

“No,” I said. “You changed the numbers.”

Mira took out a second document.

“And now the paternity test. The samples belong to Madison’s unborn child and two alleged fathers.”

It was then that Chris looked at me for the first time.

“Audrey, this is impossible.”

“The result is simple,” the expert said. “Chris Foster is not the father. The biological father is Dr. Evans.”

Evans sank into a chair. His fingers began moving as if he were trying to hide the trembling.

!!!  I found my first love freezing in Central Park with three babies, and when my mother saw them, her smile vanished

Chris whispered:

“Madison told me the child was mine.”

“She made you believe it, and I was supposed to die to cover that lie,” I answered.

Mira placed another file on the table.

“It does not end here. The patents you transferred to ‘Madison Biotech’ legally belong to Audrey. Half of their financing came from the apartment she sold.”

Chris became pale.

“You knew this?”

“I knew you were hiding something. Now I know how you made me lose everything.”

At that moment Mira’s phone rang. She listened, then her face changed.

“The bank has frozen the account,” she said. “But there is a problem. Madison’s father tried to sell the patents urgently this morning.”

Chris took out his phone. A new message appeared on the screen.

“If I go down, I’ll take you down with me.”

The sender was Madison.

Chris stared at the message for a long time. Then an unknown number lit up on his second phone.

He answered.

“Chris,” Madison’s tired voice sounded, “they don’t know that that night you yourself signed my file…”
