The widowed cleaner in my house asked for help, but when the lawyer appeared Adrian’s face suddenly turned pale

That morning, in the kitchen of my house, the widowed cleaner called her mother and quietly asked her for twenty-eight dollars for baby formula, while I froze by the door.

Rain beat against the windows. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and wet wool stood in the kitchen. Marisa Keen stood at the table, holding a phone in one hand and turning the cap of a baby bottle with the other.

“Mother, I know I’ve already asked you many times, but… could you lend me twenty-eight dollars?”

I could not hear the answer, although everything was written on her face.

“Owen’s formula is almost gone. I was supposed to make it last until Friday, but I counted this morning and have only two feedings left. No, please, don’t take it from your grocery money. If you can’t, I’ll find another way.”

I’ll find another way.

Those words struck me as if someone had thrown the accounts of millions lying in my office into a fire. The previous week, during one dinner in Boston, I had paid thirty-two dollars for a drink without even checking the receipt. Marisa, meanwhile, was looking for twenty-eight dollars for her baby.

I quietly moved away. I did not want her to know that I had heard.

I entered the office, closed the door, and sat down at the desk. Numbers from construction projects flashed on the screen, but for the first time in my life every number seemed useless to me. I searched online for the prices of formula, diapers, rent, transportation, and electricity. Then I took out Marisa’s pay slip.

I calculated the account twice.

Both times I got the same result: after her salary, she had almost nothing left.

At noon Marisa entered my study. She held a white cloth in her hand and wiped dust from the shelves.

“Marisa, there is something I have to ask you,” I said carefully.

She immediately stopped moving.

“If I did something wrong, tell me.”

“No. Just… do you have to take care of the child alone?”

Her fingers tightened around the cloth.

“Owen’s father died.”

“I know. Forgive me, I should not have asked.”

“It’s nothing. I have had to answer that for four years.”

Four years.

That number was strangely familiar. Four years ago, a conversation had taken place in my family’s house that I still could not drive from my mind. My father, my mother, and our family lawyer Henry Blake had been standing in the library. As soon as I entered the room, everyone fell silent. On the table then too lay an old, dark-green envelope.

At the memory of that day, I felt cold on my neck.

“Tell me your husband’s full name,” I asked Marisa.

She looked at me. There was no fear in her eyes. Rather, there was fatigue and such caution, as if she had been waiting for this question for years.

“Nathaniel Whitmore.”

My breathing stopped.

Whitmore.

The family surname my father never mentioned. The surname that changed my mother’s face when she heard it.

In the evening Marisa left. I decided to follow her from a distance to her home. I wanted to help, but I did not dare simply give her money. I thought that if I left an envelope at the door, I would not touch her dignity.

I stopped the car in front of her small apartment. A yellow light showed behind the curtains. Just then a black car stopped by the house.

Henry Blake got out of it.

He went to Marisa’s door and knocked three times. After several seconds, the door opened.

“What are you doing here?” Marisa’s voice was heard.

Henry raised an old leather bag in his hand.

“It is time for you to learn everything.”

Marisa stepped back. Then she went to the small cabinet standing by the wall and took from the bottom drawer the thing I had seen on the table in our library four years earlier.

The dark-green envelope.

I got out of the car and ran toward the door. Henry put his hand on the envelope, and Marisa slowly undid the lock. Just then a strict voice sounded behind me, and Henry’s fingers touched the edge of the paper…

Henry looked toward me and lost his color.

“Adrian? Why did you come here?”

Marisa stood in the doorway, holding the envelope in her hand.

“I should ask you that question too,” I said. “Why is my surname in your house?”

Henry immediately closed the door.

“You do not yet have the right to know this.”

“For four years my family has been hiding one name. And now I see you in this woman’s house.”

Marisa looked at the envelope.

“Henry, he has to know. If he really is Nathaniel’s brother, there is no point in hiding anymore.”

Brother.

The word dropped a heavy stone into my heart.

“Was Nathaniel my brother?”

Henry lowered his head.

“Half-brother. From your father’s first marriage. The family said he was a stranger, but that was not the truth.”

“Why did you hide it from me?”

“Because Nathaniel discovered something. Something your family could not survive.”

Marisa placed the envelope on the table. Beside it lay a small yellow baby sock, with a star-shaped stitch on it.

“This was left to my husband one day before his death,” she said. “He told me that if anything happened to him, I should give the envelope to you.”

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?”

Marisa’s eyes lit up.

“Because I was told that you were against him too.”

Henry took a small voice recorder from the bag.

“Listen to this first. Then you will open the envelope. But know that after this there will be no road back…”

Henry turned on the recorder. For several seconds a rustling sounded in the room, and then a tired man’s voice.

“If you are hearing this, Adrian, probably four years have already passed. Do not believe me blindly. Find the records of the contents of Father’s safe and see to whom the shares of the construction companies were transferred.”

My knees weakened.

It was Nathaniel’s voice. Old, but completely recognizable. In childhood I had met him only once, though I remembered his laugh and the small scar near his left eyebrow.

The recording continued.

“Father did not build the company only in his own name. My mother’s money and lands were used. After her death, my share was illegally transferred into your father’s foundation. When I learned this, I asked Henry to keep the documents. If I die, Marisa and my child must be given everything that legally belongs to them.”

Marisa covered her lips with her hand.

“He knew that I was expecting Owen,” she whispered.

Henry opened the envelope and put several sheets on the table: a birth certificate, an agreement transferring shares, and a letter written in Nathaniel’s hand.

“Your father did not deny Nathaniel because he was a disgrace,” Henry said. “He erased him from the family because Nathaniel discovered the theft.”

I picked up the first sheet. My mother’s signature was there too. The date was written as four years earlier.

“This is impossible,” I said.

“Is it impossible that you believed everyone who kept silent?” Marisa smiled bitterly.

In the letter Nathaniel wrote that his share had been hidden in the company owners’ register and, in the event of his death, the inheritance had to be transferred to Marisa and the child. At the end stood one sentence: “Adrian must know the truth, because he is the only one who can still stop all this.”

I saw my name and understood for the first time that Nathaniel had hoped in me.

“Why did he die?” I asked.

Henry avoided Marisa’s gaze.

“Officially, it was a car accident. But this morning I received the old expert examination report. The brakes had been deliberately damaged.”

Silence fell over the room.

My phone rang. My mother’s number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Where are you?” she asked. Panic was mixed into her voice.

“At Nathaniel’s house.”

“Adrian, do not trust that woman. Henry is lying to you.”

“Then tell me why my brother disappeared from our family.”

My mother did not answer for a long time.

Then she said quietly:

“If you opened the envelope, go to your father’s safe. There is one more thing there. And if someone else already has that thing, by morning you will no longer be able to save anyone…”

Henry looked at the phone, as if he had been expecting this phrase. Then such fear appeared on his face as I had never seen before.

“What thing are you talking about?” I asked.

Henry could not answer. Outside, the engine of a black car started. I went to the window and saw the car move away from our house—the old driver of my father was sitting at the wheel…
