Part 4 — My Husband Brought His Pregnant Mistress into My Family Home and Had Her Choose the Nursery Color, but Her Smile Disappeared When the Lawyer Appeared

The next morning I did not go to the railway station alone.

Beckett was waiting for me in the car, while Margo stood two streets away. Rain ran down the brick walls of the old station, and the smell of rust rose from the tracks.

The woman came in ten minutes.

She was wearing a gray hat and holding a small wooden box in her hand.

“I am Lena,” she said. “Grayson’s former accountant.”

“Why now?”

She squeezed the box.

“Because I thought I was counting money. In reality, I was destroying people’s lives.”

There was a small memory device inside the box. Lena said that Grayson recorded every important meeting so that he could blackmail his partners. One recording was especially dangerous.

That same day we listened to it at Margo’s office.

On the recording Grayson was speaking with his financial director.

“If Evelyn resists us, we will remove her from the foundation board,” he was saying. “And if necessary, we will prove that she is psychologically incapable of managing the property.”

“And the forged signatures?” the financial director asked.

“Before they ask questions, the money will already be in a safe place.”

The recording ended.

For a long time no one spoke.

Then Margo looked at her phone.

“The banks have frozen the accounts.”

Beckett added:

“The investigators will go to his office today.”

At that time Grayson was sitting in a private club and trying to appear to be a still-influential man. He called five lawyers in twenty minutes.

The first refused him.

The second asked whether he knew that the documents signed in his name were already undergoing examination.

And the third told him:

“I cannot defend you if you continue lying.”

Grayson dropped the phone onto the table.

Savannah was standing beside him. That morning she had already learned that the apartment rent had been stopped and that the remaining money in her bank account no longer existed.

“I believed you,” she said.

“Now is not the time for this.”

“You always said that. When you wanted me not to ask. When you wanted me not to think.”

Grayson extended a hand, but Savannah stepped back.

In the evening investigators went to his office. Cameras recorded how he tried to hide documents in the bottom drawer of a cabinet. None of this was broadcast live, but by the next day everyone already knew.

At that time I was at Alder House.

Margo told me that the court hearing would take place in two days. The protection of the house, the foundation funds, and the forged documents would be combined into one case.

“Are you afraid?” she asked me.

“I am afraid that I will have to save him again.”

Margo shook her head.

“This time you will not save him.”

At the hearing I saw Grayson completely alone for the first time. Savannah no longer accompanied him, nor did assistants or cameras. He was wearing a dark suit, but his collar was bent.

His lawyer tried to say that everything was a family disagreement.

The judge looked at the recording, the audit, the bank documents, and the expert’s conclusion.

“This is not a family disagreement,” she said. “This is deliberate deception and the illegal use of someone else’s property.”

For the first time Grayson lowered his head.

When the recording was played, he heard his own voice.

“She will be silent anyway.”

His face turned pale.

Those words had been his weapon for years. Now they had returned against him.

The court forbade him from approaching Alder House, stripped him of the right to manage the foundation, and initiated the issue of criminal liability over the forged documents. In the civil case he lost a large part of his property, while creditors took possession of the Hayes company.

I did not meet his defeat with joy.

I simply was not trying to protect him anymore for the first time.

After the hearing I opened the east wing of the house. The small bed that we had ordered for our first child was still standing there. White dust lay on the bed, and in the corner I kept the old porcelain cup whose edge had a small crack.

Grayson’s belongings were taken out that same week.

His wardrobe was emptied.

His cologne no longer stood on the bathroom shelf.

Only one photograph remained on the wall, in which we were both young and still believed that love could withstand everything.

I did not take the photograph down.

Nor did I burn it.

I simply moved it to another room.

Three months later I moved to Boston. We opened the foundation’s new office on a small street where the smell of baking bread stood in the mornings. We rebuilt the assistance program for children from the beginning. Now two people checked every transfer, and an independent specialist checked every signature.

My mornings changed.

I brewed coffee myself.

On Sundays I went to the park.

In the evenings I gave drawing lessons to my neighbor’s little girl, Nora. One day she drew a house for me, drew a large sun on the roof, and wrote below: “No one is afraid here.”

I hung the picture in my study.

The first snow came in December. A white layer settled on the windowsill, and for the first time I understood that silence did not always mean loneliness.

Sometimes it was freedom.

Six months later I received a letter from Grayson. I did not know how he had found my address. There was only one page inside the envelope.

“Can we start over? I have lost everything. You are the only person who can understand me.”

I looked at these words for a long time.

Then I called Margo.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Voltei do serviço e encontrei minha esposa escondendo os braços, mas quando mencionei minha família, minha mãe perdeu o sorriso

“Do you want an answer?” she asked me.

“Yes.”

“What will it be?”

On the back of the sheet I wrote one sentence: “I am no longer going to bear the consequences of your actions.”

I sent the letter back.

I had not even been left with anger.

Nor with a desire for victory.

Only a boundary that, at last, my own hand had drawn.

That evening I returned to Alder House. I entered the east wing, where the room intended for a child had stood empty for years. We painted a new, warm color on the walls. The golden moons were gone.

I placed the broken porcelain cup on the windowsill.

The crack was still visible.

But I was no longer afraid of the cup.

Beyond the window the first snow was slowly descending over the garden.

I closed the door and left the light on.

Now this house no longer waited for me with pain.

It waited for me with me.

Missed the beginning?
