Part 4 — My husband threw me out of the house with his lover and a suitcase, but his face changed after my calm smile

When the call from the unknown number ended, everyone in the office was silent for several seconds.

Rodrigo stood by the window. Outside, the fine rain drew white lines across the asphalt.

“What document are you talking about?” I asked.

“A custody petition,” the investigator replied. “An application has been filed in your name, as if you were refusing temporary custody of the child and leaving Sofia with her father because of your work.”

I instinctively searched for Sofia’s hand, although at that time she was sitting and drawing in the small waiting room of Elena’s office, in the next room.

“I did not sign it.”

“That is why we are asking you to come today.”

The call ended.

Rodrigo immediately took out his phone.

“This is a misunderstanding. I will call my lawyer.”

“Call him,” Elena said.

He dialed the number and went to the corner of the room. After a few seconds, his face changed.

“He isn’t answering?” I asked.

“No. He told me that he no longer represents my interests.”

For the first time Rodrigo looked at me not as an obstacle, but as a person before whom he would have to answer.

“Camila, you have to help me.”

“What for?”

“So that all this does not become more complicated for me.”

“You have already complicated it.”

“I did not want it to turn out this way.”

“But this is exactly how you planned it.”

Elena played the recording from the beginning again.

Rodrigo’s voice sounded in the room once more.

“She will sign because of Sofia. I will tell her that I will lose custody of the child or use her absences against her.”

Rodrigo froze.

This was the most difficult moment for him. Not when the bank canceled the loan. Not when Valeria turned her back. But when he heard his own words in someone else’s voice.

“I did not say that,” he whispered.

“You did,” Valeria replied.

“You were there too.”

“That is exactly why I know.”

Rodrigo looked at her.

“You made this recording?”

“I did, because I realized that afterward I would be the victim too.”

The gold-colored pen fell from her hand onto the floor. The small, sharp sound cut through the whole room.

That same evening I went to the investigator. I had the green folder, my identity card, and the letter that my grandmother Mercedes had sent me before the wedding with me.

“A house is not walls, Camila. It should be the place where no one has to prove their own existence.”

The handwriting expert compared my signature with the one on the document submitted by Rodrigo. Several hours later he raised his head.

“You did not write this.”

“Are you sure?”

“The movement of the hand has been imitated, but the pressure, pauses, and completion of the letters belong to another person.”

The case was officially opened. Rodrigo and Valeria were questioned separately. Valeria told everything: how Rodrigo had promised her the house, how he had submitted the bank application, and how he had told her that I would be “the past soon.”

Rodrigo still tried one last agreement.

“If you withdraw the application,” he told me the next day, when he was waiting for me at the entrance to the building, “I will return everything to you.”

“What are you going to return to me?”

“Peace. Money. The family.”

“You destroyed the family that day when, in front of Sofia, you put a suitcase in front of me instead of a cake.”

“I loved you.”

“Maybe. But love that requires selling someone else’s house is no longer love.”

Tears appeared in his eyes.

I did not stay to comfort him.

Within several weeks, the court recognized the house as my property. The forged document submitted by Rodrigo was declared invalid. The loan case continued separately, while the custody petition was rejected because it was confirmed that its basis had been deliberately forged.

I was not happy about his collapse.

I simply no longer tried to save him.

Valeria left the city. Later I learned that through her own lawyer she had admitted the existence of the recording and cooperated with the investigation. I no longer needed to speak with her. Her choice became not a lesson for me, but simply another fact.

One morning I returned home with a copy of the final decision in my hand.

The living room was empty.

The curtains lay removed on the floor. On the wall there remained only one light square where our wedding photograph had hung. The photograph was gone, but in the dust there were four small traces of its frame.

Sofia looked up at me from the stairs.

“Is it really our house now?”

“It was always ours.”

“Will Dad come back?”

I sat beside her. The wooden stair creaked slightly under my foot.

“He may want to come back. But entering the house and returning to the family are not the same thing.”

Sofia thought for a long time.

“If he comes back, will you still not let go of my hand?”

“Never.”

Three months later I returned to work on a full schedule. I got up at five in the morning, made coffee, and went to the rescue base. I put a new desk by the window in Sofia’s room. There she did her homework while I marked flight routes on maps.

Our life did not suddenly become easy.

Sometimes Sofia woke up at night and checked the door. Sometimes I remembered that first night at the hotel and lost my breath. But every morning a new sound appeared in the house: the whistle of the kettle, the tapping of a pencil, Sofia’s laughter.

In the autumn she drew a picture at school. There was a helicopter in the sky, and below it a small house with three figures standing at the door.

“Who is the third?” I asked.

“Grandmother Mercedes,” she replied. “She helps us too, doesn’t she?”

In winter the first snow came. Sofia drew two wings on the window with her finger.

That evening I received a message from Rodrigo.

“I miss you. I understand everything. Maybe at least once we could talk the way we used to.”

Another message came below it.

“I have changed.”

I looked at the screen for a long time. The old me would probably have called him. She would have explained, calmed him, and blamed even his guilt on her own exhaustion.

But now I knew the difference between compassion and abandoning oneself.

In reply I wrote only one sentence:

“I wish you peace, but you can no longer return to my house.”

Sofia called to me from the kitchen.

“Mom, the cake is ready!”

The joy lost that evening had returned to her voice. We baked a chocolate cake together. This time the door was locked, but no one was waiting inside with a suitcase.

I put the green folder back in the same drawer. On top of it I placed Sofia’s new drawing. And I did not throw away the old cake box, whose dented lid she had held in her hands that night. That small crease remained as proof that even in the most painful moment I had not let go of her.

Outside, snow was quietly falling on the house.

Sofia searched for my fingers.

And for the first time I was no longer waiting for someone to decide my life.

The house filled with silence.

And that silence was mine.

Missed the beginning?
