Part 4 — On Christmas Eve, my mother-in-law humiliated me in front of my young child, but one phrase from my husband suddenly wiped the smile off her face

In the morning, at six o’clock, the lawyer called me. For the first time I heard fear in his voice.

“We found a box in the archive. Galina already knows about it.”

“Where is it?”

“In the old factory. If she gets there, she may destroy the document.”

Andro got up from the bed. Marusa was sleeping beside me, holding a small plastic white rabbit in her hand.

“We are going,” he said.

We arrived at the factory on the other side of the city at half past seven in the morning. Fresh tire tracks were visible on the snow.

The door was open when we arrived.

It was cold inside. Water dripped from the old metal pipes, while dust and aged papers lay on the floor.

Galina came out of the archive room. She held a brown folder in her hand.

“You are very late.”

“Put the folder down,” Andro told her.

“You be quiet. You do not know at all whom you are protecting.”

Kristina stood behind her. Not a trace of the confidence from the previous night remained on her face.

“Mother, just tell her that this document is fake,” she whispered.

Galina pressed the folder to her chest.

“This is your father’s statement. It says that he left the property to me for the rest of my life.”

The lawyer, who had entered together with us, held out his hand.

“Then why did you hide it for twelve years?”

“Because this is my personal matter.”

“No,” I said. “This is a matter concerning the property.”

Galina took one sheet of paper from the folder.

“It says here that Nino is only a temporary manager and may be removed from the matter at any time.”

Andro looked at the sheet.

“Is this my father’s signature?”

Galina raised her head.

“Of course.”

The lawyer took the sheet from me and held it up to the light. Then he took out a second sheet.

“The signature is here too. But the ink is from six years ago, while according to this document the paper is twelve years old.”

Galina’s face changed.

“What are you saying?”

“I am saying that this sheet was made later.”

Kristina stepped back.

“Mother, you told me everything was in order.”

“Shut up!”

I turned on the recording. His father’s voice sounded in the room.

“If they are lying, Nino, do not be afraid. The main document will always be where I kept my first salary.”

The lawyer looked at the old iron cabinet standing by the archive wall. Inside, in the dust, he found a small wooden box. In the box were the receipt for his father’s first salary, the genuine will, and a notarial conclusion confirming the audio recording.

Galina grabbed the chair.

“This is impossible.”

“It is possible,” I told her. “You simply thought for years that everyone’s silence was weakness.”

At that moment, two investigators appeared at the door. They had photographs of Marusa and the doctor’s report.

“Mrs. Galina, you must come with us as a witness. An investigation has begun into the violence.”

“Nino, do not do this!” she shouted. “I am your family!”

“Family does not put shattered glass into a child’s hand.”

“I was only teaching order!”

“Order does not hit a person in the face.”

The investigators took her away. Kristina stood by the wall and cried, but I did not turn toward her again.

That same day Andro testified against his mother. This was the most difficult step for him.

In the evening, the lawyer told us that Kristina was also facing an investigation for creating a danger for the child and hiding evidence. Galina’s lawyer, meanwhile, left the case.

“I cannot defend a person who hid forged signed documents from me too,” he told Galina in the courthouse corridor.

Several weeks later, the court finally confirmed my right to manage the property. Galina’s punishment was not severe, because Andro and I did not demand revenge. But she was forbidden from approaching us and Marusa.

We never returned to the old house.

I rented a small apartment in another city, from whose window the sound of trams could be heard in the morning. I opened a legal consulting service and for the first time in my life earned money without someone else’s permission.

Andro changed jobs. He could speak with his mother only in the presence of a lawyer. At first he woke up at night and asked whether we had really left that house.

“We left,” I answered. “But we did not leave our life there.”

Three months later, Marusa brought home a drawing from kindergarten. Three people were drawn on the sheet: me, Andro, and herself. A yellow sun was drawn above, and a small red house below.

“This is our new house,” she told me. “Grandma cannot hit anyone here.”

I knelt in front of her and hugged her.

“No one can, little one.”

That evening I received a message from Galina. It contained only one sentence: “Come, let us forget everything. Family is family after all.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I calmly wrote back: “I can forgive, but I will not return to the house where a child was afraid.”

No answer came.

By the end of winter, the wounds on Marusa were almost no longer visible. I kept the pieces of the old Christmas ornament—not so that they would remind me of the pain, but so that I would never forget the moment when we began defending ourselves.

One morning, when the first snow fell on the window, Marusa saw the fragment placed in a small glass jar.

“Mom, is this no longer dangerous?”

“No,” I told her. “Now it is simply the past.”

She closed the lid of the jar and put it on the shelf.

It was snowing outside.

We were at home.

And for the first time, that was enough.

Missed the beginning?
