Part 4 — My Pregnant Husband Declared Me a Cheater and Even Brought His Lover to the Ultrasound Examination — But His Face Froze at the Doctor’s Words

“Why did he need to drive me out of my house?” I asked.

The woman’s voice was quiet but firm.

“Because the house was no longer only the home of your family. Diego had a debt and promised the creditor that he would sell your house.”

I stood by the window. Outside, cars passed along the streets of Del Valle, a dog barked somewhere, while the telephone in my hand felt so heavy, as if I were holding all the walls of the house.

“Where is the recording?”

“In the clinic archive. I kept a copy because I immediately realized that something was wrong.”

That night I went into Mateo and Lucia’s room. Both were asleep. Mateo held his fist against his little cheek, while Lucia pushed the blanket away with her foot.

I sat on the floor between them.

I already knew Diego’s truth.

But it hurt me more that he had turned our home, my work, and the children’s safety into one bargain.

The next morning I called Mariana.

“Someone from the clinic contacted me. A recording of a conversation from before Diego’s operation exists.”

“Do not meet anyone alone,” she told me. “Send me her name and number.”

“If the recording exists, everything will change.”

“No, Laura. Everything has already changed. Now others will simply find out too.”

That same day Diego called me eleven times. I did not answer the first call. Nor the second. On the third, he sent me a message.

“We need to talk like adults.”

I forwarded it to Mariana.

She answered me:

“Do not answer.”

The second message was harsher.

“If you do anything about the recording, you will lose custody of the children forever.”

This time Mariana called herself.

“Now we also have a threat. Save everything.”

Three days later a clinic employee, Nora, came to Mariana’s office. She was holding a small memory device and was so nervous that she kept fidgeting with the clasp of her bag.

“This is the recording from the day when they were filling out the forms before the operation,” she said. “Your husband was talking to the doctor and did not notice that there was a camera in the room.”

Mariana turned on the recording.

At first the rustling of papers could be heard. Then Diego’s voice.

“If she gets pregnant, I will deny everything. The child cannot be mine.”

The doctor immediately asked him:

“Does your wife know that a follow-up test is necessary after the operation?”

“Let her know whatever she wants. The main thing is that I manage to sell the apartment before then.”

A pause fell in the recording.

Then Diego chuckled.

“Paola will move in with me. And Laura will be so confused that she will sign anything.”

My whole body froze.

I had already heard these words through his actions, but now I heard them in his voice for the first time. His own voice was saying that my confusion was part of the plan.

Mariana turned off the recording.

“We will submit this to the court. We will also investigate the debts connected with the house.”

“Will he go to prison?”

“That is already a matter for the investigation. But for the first time, you will no longer have to defend yourself alone.”

That evening Diego came to the office. Security still did not know whether they should let him in, but I saw him standing in the corridor, holding an old leather bag with both hands.

“Give me five minutes,” he told me.

“You have no right to talk here.”

“I am the father of your children.”

“I will never deny that. But fatherhood does not give you the right to threaten me.”

He lowered his voice.

“Laura, if you release this recording, everything will fall apart for me.”

“You are not afraid that the truth will be spread. You are afraid that the truth will speak without you.”

Diego lowered his head.

“I needed money.”

“And for that you sold my house?”

“The debts accumulated.”

“Why did you not tell me?”

He smiled bitterly.

“Because you always thought I was a better person than I really was.”

It was the first honest sentence I had heard from him in months.

“No, Diego. I simply believed you. Those are not the same thing.”

He left.

Two weeks later the court issued a temporary decision. He was not allowed to meet the children alone while the threatening messages and the recording were being investigated. The sale of the house was suspended. The bank identified Diego’s hidden account. His creditor, who had accepted his promise to sell the apartment, refused to protect him.

I did not celebrate his punishment.

For the first time, I simply no longer had to save him from the consequences of his actions.

Several weeks later, in the courtroom, the judge listened to the recording. Diego sat beside me. When he heard his own voice, his shoulders contracted.

“If she gets pregnant, I will deny everything.”

Silence fell over the courtroom.

The judge looked at him.

“Is that your voice?”

Diego did not answer for a long time.

“Yes.”

For the first time he could no longer escape from his own words.

The divorce was finalized. The house was divided by law: my share and the children’s remained with us, while Diego had to sell his share to cover his debts. Monthly support was established for Mateo and Lucia. Paola testified against him and ended her relationship with him permanently.

My former mother-in-law came only once. She stood at the door holding a small paper bag.

“I want to apologize,” she said.

“I understand.”

“May I see the children?”

I looked at her for a long time.

“You may see them. But no one will say anything bad about me on the threshold of my house anymore.”

She nodded.

It was our first peaceful conversation.

Three months later I rented a small apartment in Coyoacán. In the mornings I made porridge for Mateo, and I always put Lucia’s left sock on her, because she immediately took off the right one.

I returned to work. In the evenings I wrote up the accounts at the kitchen table, while the children built towers out of colored blocks on the floor.

Our life was not magnificent.

But it was real.

The first snow-white foam came in December, when the children were already nine months old. I stood by the window and watched them. Mateo picked up a pencil and drew three figures on a sheet of paper.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Mommy, me, and Lucia.”

“Where is Daddy?”

Mateo thought for a while.

“He lives far away.”

I did not correct him.

The children had to know the truth completely, but not with the burden of my pain. They were not to become either a weapon of my revenge or a means of his self-justification.

!!!  The Husband’s Children Accused Me Even at the Funeral, but the Lawyer’s Hand Suddenly Stopped Moving

One evening, almost a year later, I received a letter from Diego.

“I want us to start over. Now I understand everything. You were guilty too, but I am ready to forgive you.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I deleted it.

He called once more. This time I answered.

“Laura, I only want ten minutes.”

“No.”

“At least for the children.”

“For matters concerning the children, contact Mariana.”

“Do you really not love me anymore?”

I stood by the window. Mateo’s laughter could be heard in the room, while Lucia banged a spoon on the table.

“I am no longer waiting for you, Diego. That is more important.”

I ended the call.

That same night I opened a box of old things. Inside were the first pregnancy test, the ultrasound picture of the twins, and the small, crumpled silver ribbon with which I had tied my hair that morning when I went to the doctor alone.

I picked up the ribbon in my hand.

Once I thought that day was the end of my family.

Now I knew that it had turned out to be the first day of the end of my fear.

I placed the ribbon on the shelf beside Mateo’s drawing. The children fell asleep beside me. Outside, the streetlights were reflected on the snow-colored window.

I no longer needed anyone to believe that I was innocent.

I knew who I was.

And this time I locked the door of my house myself.
