Three Months Later, the Doctors Told Me I Had to Let My Child Go, but the Chief Doctor Lost Color at the Dog’s Reaction

That day, when the doctor told me that my newborn son had only a few hours left to say goodbye, the dog hidden in the ward suddenly froze.

For three months I had been sitting on the worn green chair standing by the door of the intensive care unit. A transparent plastic wall covered Luka’s bed, and above it a monitor blinked with cold green numbers. Every time the breathing indicator fell, my fingers tightened involuntarily.

“Nino,” Doctor David told me that morning, “we have done everything.”

In his hand was a metal pen missing its cap. He turned the pen as if saying the words was more difficult than fighting for the sick child.

“Everything really?” I asked.

“The damage to his brain is irreversible. We may need to… make a decision today.”

I did not dare hear the word he was avoiding.

“You want me to sign, don’t you?”

David looked away.

“I want Luka not to have pain anymore.”

That night I bent over by the bed and pressed my forehead against the plastic wall. Luka’s small hand lay motionless among the tubes. He wore a white bracelet on his wrist, on which it was written in black ink: “Luka Meladze, room seven.” This bracelet was the only thing I checked every day, because I was afraid that one day someone would mistakenly confuse my child with another.

I wanted one last hug. That was all.

I quietly contacted a therapeutic dog center. They told me that Bruno was a calm, trained dog and was accustomed to working with children. I knew that bringing him into the unit was forbidden, but that night I could no longer think about rules.

At four o’clock in the afternoon, Nurse Mari brought Bruno in through the back door. A small wooden plaque hung around the dog’s neck, on which his name was engraved. I thought he would go straight to Luka.

He did not.

He stopped at the door, raised his ears, and turned his head toward my son’s bed. Then he made a low, hoarse sound.

“Bruno, come, my boy,” I whispered.

The dog seemed not to understand me. He approached the bed, but stared not at Luka’s face, rather at the transparent cabinet hidden below the bed. His paws slipped on the floor, his body tensed, and then he whimpered with all his strength.

Mari went pale.

“This is not a normal reaction,” she said.

“What does he feel?” I asked.

No one answered.

David looked into the room. For the first time I saw on his face not tiredness, but fear.

“Take the dog out,” he said.

“Why? Did something happen to my son?”

“Nino, do not complicate things now.”

Bruno ran to the cabinet and touched the plastic tube with his teeth. At that same moment the monitor began to beep rapidly. Luka’s fingers clenched slightly.

I froze.

“He moved his hand,” I said.

Mari rushed to the bed, while David shouted into the corridor:

“No one touch the line!”

But the nurse had already picked up the folder lying beside the bed. Her fingers trembled over the papers. Then she turned toward me and looked at me with such an expression, as if for three months she had been living together with the same lie. She opened the folder and moved her hand to one sheet…

Mari’s fingers reached the corner of the paper, but David grabbed her by the wrist.

“Put this folder here,” he told her.

“Doctor, there is another record here.”

“Mari!”

Bruno was still standing by the cabinet and growling quietly. The monitor’s numbers were slowly changing, while Luka’s lips moved slightly.

“You told me he was unconscious,” I said.

David did not answer.

Mari bent toward me.

“Nino, it says on this sheet that the medication dose was changed last night.”

“Which medication?”

“The sedative.”

David locked the door.

“Let us discuss this matter later.”

“No, we are discussing it now!” I shouted. “Why is the dog reacting to my son as if he sees danger?”

Mari was silent for several seconds, then opened the last page of the folder. There stood my signature, although I had never written it.

“It says here that you refused an additional examination,” she said.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Llevé a otro hombre a la fiesta del jefe que jamás me veía, y cuando él se acercó, su sonrisa desapareció

My blood froze.

“I refused nothing.”

David lowered his eyes.

At that moment Bruno struck the cabinet door with his paw. A small glass vial fell out from inside and rolled across the floor. Luka’s name was written on the label, but the date was tomorrow’s.

Mari bent down to pick it up and suddenly stopped.

“Nino, there is another record here… and this is no longer only a mistake…”

Mari did not touch the vial from the floor. She only took out her phone and turned on the camera.

“Film everything,” I told her.

David opened the door, but security officers were already standing in the corridor. Mari had called them in advance.

“No one is to leave this unit,” she said.

David lost his composure for the first time.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

“That is precisely why I am recording,” Mari replied.

She spread the folder open on the table. One page said that Luka’s condition was irreversible and that additional treatment was considered futile. On the second page, however, something else could be seen: the amount of sedative in his blood exceeded the permissible limit by almost ten times.

I could not find a word.

“This is impossible,” I said at last. “You told me that his brain was dying.”

“His brain was not dying,” Mari told me, her eyes full of tears. “He could not wake up because of the excessive medication.”

David struck the table with his fist.

“It was an experimental treatment. Every dose was approved.”

“Then why does the program show that you changed the dose?” Mari asked.

Only the monitor’s beeping could be heard in the room. Bruno stood by Luka’s bed and did not take his eyes off his breathing tube.

Mari moved to the next page.

“There is something else here. Nino, together with your signature it says that you refused to continue the child’s life.”

“That is not my signature.”

“We know,” she said. “The hospital camera shows that this paper was brought in at two o’clock at night. At that time you were sitting by the bed.”

!!!  Part 4 — Six days after giving birth, my husband declared me a kidnapper of my own child, but when I placed the red folder down, the lawyer’s smile disappeared

David covered his face with his hands.

“I was only carrying out orders.”

“Whose orders?” I asked.

He answered me not with words, but with his gaze. On the last page of the folder stood the signature of the hospital administrator, Irakli Varshalomidze.

At that same moment my phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

“Do not answer,” Mari told me.

But the call ended and a voice message started. I heard Irakli’s voice:

“Mrs. Nino, if you try to transfer the child or go to the police, you should first know that there is something in Luka’s birth documents that will destroy your family forever.”

Bruno suddenly began barking. Mari rushed to the window and looked down.

A black car stood in the hospital courtyard. Two men were waiting beside it.

David said quietly:

“They came to take the child away…”

And then I realized that saving Luka no longer meant only stopping the medication…
