After My Mother’s Funeral, I Brought My Twin Girls Home, but One Quiet Question from One of Them Immediately Erased Lila’s Smile

That evening, when I brought my five-year-old twin girls home, they looked at the food laid out on the table as if they needed permission to sit down there.

Lila filled the whole kitchen with smells. Chicken was roasting in the oven, pasta was boiling in the pot, and warm bread lay on the counter. She did not know what Moira and Clara liked, so she prepared everything children might like.

I was fastening the girls by the door. Both of them had their hands clasped around each other. Their little suitcases lay on the floor, and black ribbons left over from the funeral hung from the handles.

“This is Lila,” I said quietly. “And this is Tom. From now on, you will live in this house too.”

Lila immediately bent down, but she did not extend her hand.

“Hello, Moira. Hello, Clara. You do not have to be okay right now. You do not have to call me anything either. Dad is here. I am here.”

The girls clung more tightly to my legs. I felt a heaviness caught in my throat and lowered my head so Lila would not see how my eyes were filling.

“Maybe you could eat something?” she asked.

Moira looked at the table. Clara looked first at her sister, then at me. Marks from fingernails could be seen on her fingers, as if she had been gripping her own hands the whole way.

“Is there some for us too?” she asked.

The smile disappeared from Lila’s face.

“Of course,” she said. “Everything is for you too.”

Clara nodded, but did not move from her place.

“If we do not eat much, might you still let us stay?”

Only the low hum of the refrigerator could be heard in the kitchen. The question struck my heart as if someone had slammed a door shut from the inside.

“No one will leave you,” I told her. “Never.”

Moira looked directly at me for the first time then.

“Mother used to say that if we behaved badly, they would take us to another house.”

“Mother used to be very angry,” I quickly interrupted, although I did not recognize my own voice either.

Lila looked toward me.

“Hayden,” she said calmly, “the children want to sit down.”

The girls sat at the table. But instead of eating, they broke the pieces of bread into small parts and hid them in their pockets. Clara hid one piece under her apron, while Moira quietly whispered to her:

!!!  4. RÉSZ — Ötödször utasítottak el, mégis tőlem vártak megoldást, amikor leállt a rendszer — aztán a vezérigazgató arca elfehéredett

“We have to save it for tomorrow.”

“Why?” I asked.

Both of them fell silent.

That night we put them to bed in the small room next to our bedroom. Lila spread two new yellow blankets on the bed. Little stars were drawn on them. The girls lay down, but they did not take off their shoes.

“Can the door stay open?” Moira asked.

“Of course.”

“And if we want water, should we call you?”

“Yes.”

Having slipped under the blanket, Clara said quietly:

“We cannot call out loudly.”

Lila froze on the threshold. And I realized for the first time that being separated from my children had not been only missing them. For years, something had been happening in their lives that I could not see.

At two o’clock at night I went downstairs to drink water. On the kitchen table lay a small piece of paper that had fallen from Clara’s pocket. In a child’s handwriting it said: “Wednesday — one sandwich. Thursday — nothing.”

The paper trembled in my hand.

I heard footsteps behind me. Lila stood at the door.

“Hayden,” she said, “you need to see this.”

In her hand was the black folder we had brought from the girls’ old house. She opened the clasp and reached toward the top sheet…

Lila’s fingers touched the paper, but then Clara’s frightened voice came to us from upstairs.

“Dad? Are you here?”

I immediately closed the folder and rushed up the stairs. Both girls were sitting on the bed. Moira held a plastic cup in her hand, while Clara was looking toward the door.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Someone is walking along the wall,” Clara said.

I locked every door in the house. There was no one. Only the heating pipes were knocking.

Lila sat down with the girls.

“No one will come in here until you want them to,” she told them.

Moira bit her lips.

“Mother locked the door when we cried.”

“Why?” I asked.

Moira did not answer me. But Clara took a small plastic key from under the blanket.

“It is for her cabinet,” she whispered. “She kept our things there. And the phone.”

In the morning we took the folder to the children’s doctor. The pages listed missed appointments, a sharp loss of weight, and several notes from the school psychologist. But on the last page, one sentence was circled: “The children say that in the evenings they are afraid of someone.”

!!!  My husband called another woman the love of his life on stage, but at the sight of my bag his smile disappeared

The doctor took off his glasses.

“The police have to see all of this.”

“What happened to my children?” I asked.

Instead of answering, he picked up the phone.

At that very moment my phone rang. An unknown number was visible on the screen.

“Hayden Walker speaking?”

“Yes.”

“I am the lawyer who handled your former wife’s estate case. You need to know that another recording was found in her house…”

The man fell silent.

“What recording?” I asked.

“The one the police requested this morning. And your daughters’ voices can be heard in it…”

At the lawyer’s last words, the cup fell from Clara’s hand. The plastic hit the floor and cracked in two.

“What recording are you talking about?” I asked.

“It was in an old phone,” the lawyer replied. “The police have already sent me a copy. Please come to the clinic. The child-protection investigator will be there too.”

An hour later we were sitting in the meeting room of a small clinic. A bottle of water stood on the table, and beside it the girls’ dark-blue hair clip, which the investigator had placed there as evidence.

Investigator Nora Hill, lawyer Mark Evans, and a child psychologist were in the room. Lila sat beside me and squeezed my fingers on the hand. The girls were in the other room arranging colored pencils.

Mark turned on a small device.

At first, only the banging of a door could be heard. Then a woman’s voice sounded. I recognized my former wife, Amy.

“There will be no food today until you tell me who broke the cup.”

A child’s crying could be heard.

“I did not break it,” Moira said.

Then a rough man’s voice sounded. Kevin’s.

“Shut up. If you cry again, I will lock both of you in the basement.”

Lila held her breath. And I clung to the chair so tightly that my fingernails sank into my palm.

Clara’s voice sounded in the recording:

“Will Dad come?”

There was silence for several seconds.

“Your father will not come,” Amy said. “He does not love you. That is why he did not take you.”

“That is a lie,” I uttered.

The recording continued. A child’s quiet crying, the sound of a door being locked, then Moira’s whisper:

“If we call Dad, Mother will get angry.”

Mark turned off the device.

No one spoke.

Nora Hill carefully told me:

“This recording was made six months ago. Your former wife probably hid the phone, but it was found while the house was being examined after the accident.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine verschwundene Ehefrau tauchte mit einem Jungen auf, doch als sie meine Mutter beschuldigte, wurde mein Vater kreidebleich

“Why did no one call me?” I asked.

“The school filed a report twice. The mother denied everything both times. They tried to contact you using the old address from the court records.”

Lila squeezed my hand.

“They are safe now,” she told me.

I nodded, but at that moment I could not feel happiness. I wanted only one thing: to give my children back the years they had spent in fear.

Nora took another sheet of paper from the folder.

“There is one more issue. Kevin’s brother, Daniel Reed, claims that the girls should be handed over to him. He says that you are putting pressure on them and that the recording is fake.”

“What?” Lila’s face turned pale.

“He has already filed a request for temporary guardianship,” the lawyer said. “The hearing is tomorrow morning.”

My phone rang again. This time Daniel’s number was visible on the screen.

“Answer it,” Lila told me quietly.

I answered the call.

“Hayden,” Daniel said, “if you want me not to reveal all of this in court, you have to bring the girls to me tonight…”

There was not persuasion in his voice, but a threat. And then I realized that the recording was only the beginning…
