Part 4 — I Found My Five-Year-Old Child Wet and Frightened in the Yard, but Lorena’s Face Suddenly Changed

That night we locked the clinic doors and called the police.

I did not call Lorena.

Nor did I intend to go to the warehouse alone.

Mariana stood beside Sofia, while Mr. Ernesto handed a copy of the video to the police investigator. A blue light flashed in the corridor, and Sofia’s broken dinosaur tail slowly rolled across the floor.

“Someone wants to frighten you,” the investigator told me.

“They are using my child.”

“From now on they will not be able to use her anymore.”

Lorena called me eleven times in nine minutes.

Finally she sent me a message: “If you involve the police, they will take Sofia away from you.”

I looked at the screen and, for the first time, I was no longer afraid.

“Save this one too,” I told the investigator.

Niko stood by the wall. Fatigue and shame were written on his face.

“I no longer represent Lorena,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because she deceived me. And because she made me sign a petition that served not the child’s safety, but a plan against you.”

Just then Davit called me.

“Come to the warehouse, Elene.”

“No.”

“You don’t know what I have.”

“You know what I have.”

Silence fell on the other side of the line.

“Delete the video,” he told me.

“It is already too late.”

“Lorena will not forgive you for this.”

“You will not frighten Sofia again.”

The police determined Davit’s location. He was found at the old warehouse, but he was not alone. Lorena had also arrived there. She was sitting in the car door and holding the photo of Sofia, the photo she had taken in the yard that evening.

When we arrived at them, Lorena came straight toward me.

“You ruined everything,” she told me.

“No. You recorded everything yourself.”

“Sofia is simply a difficult child.”

Mariana stepped back so that Sofia would not hear this.

!!!  Part 4 — I unexpectedly came home and found my girlfriend and best friend together, but the thing Chloe saw in the hallway erased her smile

“She is five years old, Lorena.”

“I was teaching her discipline.”

“With a hose?”

Lorena pressed her lips together.

“It was water. Nothing more.”

The investigator turned on the recording.

Lorena’s own voice returned from the cold walls of the warehouse.

“If you cry, we will send your mother to prison.”

Then Davit’s voice was heard.

“Elene cannot protect the child. We will take guardianship.”

Lorena froze.

For the first time she was listening to her own words from the outside.

As if it were someone else’s voice, someone she did not recognize.

“I did not say it like that,” she whispered.

“You did,” Niko answered. “I was not there, but a recording cannot lie.”

Davit tried to escape. A police officer grabbed him.

“I only wanted to help her,” he shouted.

“Whom?” I asked.

For the first time Davit looked at me.

“Lorena.”

“And frightening my child was help?”

He could not answer me.

The next day a case was opened against Lorena for violence against a child, threats, and filing a false guardianship request. Davit was also charged with threats and attempting to manipulate the recording. Niko officially stated that he would testify.

At court Lorena no longer shouted.

She sat in a small room and nervously pressed her fingers together.

When the judge announced the temporary protection order, Lorena looked toward me.

“Elene, please. Sofia is important to me too.”

I answered calmly.

“People who are important do not frighten children by telling them that their mothers will be punished.”

This was not revenge.

It was simply the first time I was no longer trying to save her at the expense of my own child.

Two weeks later, Lorena’s room in our house was empty. Only one small thing remained in the closet: Sofia’s yellow rain boot, with a green star drawn on it. That day, in the yard, this boot had been lost in the mud, and I had searched for it all evening.

!!!  My sister announced the death of my very-much-alive father, but when he leaned toward the phone, his voice changed everything

I picked up the boot.

There was still cold yard water inside it.

And I placed the photo Lorena had taken on the windowsill. Not because I wanted to look at it, but because I never wanted to forget how quickly the truth can be hidden before a person’s eyes.

Three months later, the court granted me full custody of Sofia. Lorena could see the child only under a specialist’s supervision, until Sofia herself felt safe.

At the first meeting, Sofia refused.

I did not make the decision in her place.

“You are not obliged to want to hug anyone,” I told her.

“If I ever want to, will you tell me?”

“Always.”

I rented a new apartment on the other side of the city. In the mornings I walked Sofia to kindergarten, and in the evenings we cooked pasta in the small kitchen. I began working from home, and hung Sofia’s drawings on the wall.

In one drawing, two people stood under a yellow umbrella.

“This is you and me,” she told me.

“Is it raining?”

“No. We simply do not need an umbrella anymore.”

The first snow came at the end of December. Sofia stood by the window and looked at the white yard. Then she opened the closet and brought me her yellow boot.

“Should we throw this away?” she asked.

“If you want.”

She hugged the boot to her chest.

“Not yet. Now it does not frighten me anymore.”

Months later, Lorena sent me a letter. She said that she had changed, that everything was Davit’s fault, and that I had to meet her at least once.

I read the letter to the end.

Then I looked at Sofia, who was drawing a house on the floor with chalk.

I sent Lorena a short reply: “Sofia’s peace is no longer something I will bargain about with anyone.”

I wrote nothing more.

In the evening I returned the yellow boot to the shelf. The green star shone in the light of the snow coming through the window.

!!!  Part 4 — After ten years of waiting, I went to Nadia’s door full of love, but a single word from her made me lose all heart.

Sofia took my hand.

“Mom, shall we lock the door?”

“It is locked, my little one.”

This time the silence in the house no longer resembled fear.

The yellow boot stood by the window.

And we were no longer waiting for anyone.
