My Husband Brought His Beloved Woman to the Hospital, but the Nurse’s Six Words Made Both of Them Stop Breathing

I was lying on a stretcher covered in blood in the emergency room when my husband took the hand of the woman because of whom I had been waiting for a divorce for eight months. Shards of glass were stuck in my hair, my dress had been torn open over my stomach, and every breath hurt as if knives were cutting my ribs from the inside.

Dominic Vance stopped at the door. The most dangerous man in Lake Harbor was not confused even by the sight of a weapon, but now for the first time I noticed fear on his face.

Marissa Cole stood beside him. Her well-groomed fingers clung to Dominic’s sleeve.

“Let’s go, Dominic,” she whispered to him. “She left you herself. You owe her nothing.”

I almost laughed, but the pain caught my breath.

Eleven years of marriage. Eleven months of betrayal. Eight months of fighting with lawyers. And it turned out that the only difference between a wife and a strange woman was who was convenient for the husband at that moment.

Dominic took one step toward me.

“Claire…”

I barely turned my head. A small silver medallion hung around my neck, with a miniature image of the Lake Harbor lighthouse inside it. In the morning, when I left the house, I touched it with my fingers and thought that this would be the last day in that house.

Then the accident happened.

Nurse Hannah Brooks looked at the ultrasound machine’s screen and her face suddenly changed. She looked at the doctor, then back at the screen.

“Doctor, there is something here.”

“The pressure is dropping. Continue.”

Hannah raised her voice. Her six words were heard by the whole room.

“Your wife is thirty-two weeks pregnant!”

Dominic’s hand slid down from Marissa’s arm.

“What did you say?”

The doctor looked at the screen.

“There is a fetal heartbeat. One hundred forty-eight. Call the maternity department immediately.”

They cut my torn dress open even farther, and for the first time my stomach appeared—the one I had hidden for months with wide sweaters and winter coats.

The color disappeared from Dominic’s face.

“Claire, why didn’t you tell me?”

!!!  Part 4 — Three Years Later He Returned to My Door, Saw the Children, and the Color Immediately Left His Face

I saw hurt in his eyes, and for the first time I felt the desire to tell him the truth. Because I no longer felt safe beside you. Because you were living with another woman while I was carrying our child alone. Because I did not know whether this child would have a father or her father’s enemies.

But I could not say the words.

The monitor sounded an alarm.

“The pressure is critical!”

“To the operating room!”

Dominic bent toward me, but security held him back.

“This child is mine!” he shouted.

Hannah looked at him sternly.

“At this moment neither the woman nor the child is your property.”

The doors closed, and Dominic remained in the corridor.

Forty-two minutes later a girl was born. She did not weigh three kilograms and thirteen ounces—she weighed only three pounds and thirteen ounces, was breathing weakly, and was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit. And I was kept in surgery: internal bleeding, a collapsed lung, and an uncertain future.

Hannah told Dominic:

“Your daughter is alive. But your wife is still in critical condition.”

Dominic put his hand against the wall.

Marissa cautiously approached.

“You could not have known,” she said.

Dominic slowly turned his head.

“You knew?”

Marissa’s smile disappeared.

“What do you mean?”

“Three weeks ago you asked me whether my wife still drove the car that was registered under her maiden name. Why?”

Marissa’s lips froze.

Dominic took a step forward.

“Did you ask because of jealousy, or because you knew exactly where to strike?”

Dominic released Marissa’s wrist and looked up at the cameras in the corridor. His lawyer called on the phone, but Dominic did not answer.

“Where is Claire’s car?” he asked.

“The police took it,” Hannah told him. “The brakes did not work.”

Marissa turned pale.

“It was an accident.”

“No one has questioned you yet,” Dominic replied. “Why are you defending yourself?”

At that time I could not see them from the operating room, but Hannah later told me that Marissa’s phone fell to the floor. A message lit up on the screen: “File removed. Where is the second copy?”

!!!  Drei Einsatzfahrzeuge blockierten um sieben Uhr morgens meine Straße, weil der alte Mann, dem ich am Vortag Brot gekauft hatte, eine Holzkiste für mich hinterlassen hatte

Dominic read it.

“Which file?”

Marissa picked up the phone.

“It is my personal matter.”

“My wife is fighting for her life, and you are talking about files.”

Hannah returned to me and examined the silver medallion placed in my hand. On its back she noticed a small scratch.

“Claire left this with me,” she said quietly. “If she did not survive, I was supposed to give it to Dominic in the morning.”

The medallion opened. Behind the miniature lighthouse, a thin memory card was hidden.

Hannah looked at Dominic.

“There is a recording here that will change everything…”

Hannah opened the medallion in the family room at four in the morning, under a blue lamp. I was still unconscious, but Dominic, Marissa, and her lawyer stood by the operating-room door. Hannah inserted the card into a small device and turned on the sound.

At first my breathing was heard. Then my voice.

“If you are listening to this, it means Dominic has still not told me the truth and I was no longer able to tell it. The baby is thirty-two weeks old. She must remain alive, even if I do not survive.”

Dominic lowered his eyes.

In the recording I told how I found transfers from his company’s accounts. The money was going to a fund registered in Marina’s name, and from the fund—to the accounts of Dominic’s main competitors. I also said that three weeks earlier I had accidentally overheard Marissa in the back room of a café.

Then another voice was heard.

Marissa.

“She will not sign the divorce papers while the woman is alive. If she finds out about the child, Claire will never let you go.”

A man asked:

“And the car?”

“The brakes have already been replaced. Tomorrow Claire will leave the city. The road will do the rest.”

Silence fell over the room.

Dominic struck the wall with his hand. The lawyer lowered his eyes.

“This could be edited,” Marissa said, but her voice was trembling.

Dominic looked at her.

“You knew about my child.”

“I only suspected.”

“You planned her murder.”

“No! I only wanted her to disappear from my life!”

!!!  Minden üzlet elutasította a lányomat a ballagási ruha miatt, de amikor a barátja átadta a ruhazsákot, az arca elsápadt

Hannah stopped the recording.

“Claire left one more file. It contains bank statements and the car inspection report.”

Dominic covered his face with his hands. All his life he had forced others to bow their heads before him, but now he heard his own voice: the words he had said to Marissa several weeks earlier—“Claire cannot hurt me as long as I control her name.”

That conversation was also in the recording. He himself had signed the lie that I had left the house and abandoned the marriage.

“Call the police,” Dominic said.

Marissa stepped back.

“You cannot do this. If I fall, half your empire will collapse too.”

“It has already collapsed.”

Hannah picked up the phone, but just then Dominic’s number rang. On the screen it was not the lawyer’s name, but the head of harbor security.

Dominic answered.

“Mr. Vance, there is a fire in your warehouse. The police have brought a search warrant, and there is one more thing… The safe registered in Claire’s name has been opened. Inside they found something no one expected…”
