My Wife Told Me at the Festive Dinner That She Had Never Loved Me — and in the Morning She Noticed My Disappearance and Froze

That night, when my wife told me that she could be with me only because I was “safe,” I was still preparing dinner for her. The smell of garlic and butter filled the kitchen, while her favorite dish, chicken Parmesan, was browning in the oven. Two candles were burning on the table, and beside the bottle of wine lay a small copper bell — the one I had bought at a street market after our first date. Every time I returned from another business trip, she would ring the bell and joke that the “main guest” had come home.

That evening the bell stood silently.

“It’s very beautiful,” Elena said when she came home and looked at the table. “Did you do all this?”

“I thought we could spend a little time together.”

She kissed me on the cheek, but her lips were cold.

“I missed you too,” she told me, and her eyes immediately darted toward the phone.

We sat down. After the first glass she smiled, with the second she praised the food I had prepared, and with the third her voice grew heavy. I watched the candle flame turn in her wineglass and convinced myself that this evening would change something.

“You are a good man, Philippe,” she said suddenly.

“Is that a compliment?”

“I don’t know.” She chuckled. “You always take care of me. You pay the bills, buy presents, help everyone. Being with you is easy.”

My fork remained on the plate.

“And is that bad?”

Elena lowered her head. I could already smell the alcohol very close.

“You never attracted me the way a man should attract me.”

The words cut the air from me. Still, I asked calmly:

“Then why did you marry me?”

“Because you are kind. You are safe. But I like other types of men. Harsher. More dangerous.”

She drank again.

“And did you find one like that?”

Elena smiled at me first, then looked away.

“When I met him, I could no longer restrain myself. Everything happened by itself.”

Something inside me finally collapsed, but I did not say a word. For two years I had worked from morning until night, arranged our home, bought her favorite books, and thought that caring was another form of love. At that moment I realized that my wife saw my kindness not as love, but as a convenient shelter.

!!!  Después de cuatro hijas, mi esposo sostuvo por fin a nuestro hijo, pero su rostro cambió y el médico dejó de sonreír

“Who is he?” I asked.

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

“You still won’t be able to do anything.”

That phrase turned out to be more painful than the betrayal.

At two in the morning Elena’s head lay on the sofa. Her phone was flashing beside her, but I did not touch it anymore. I entered the bedroom, opened the wardrobe, and took only three shirts, my wallet, passport, and a small metal box. Inside the box lay my old work card — the one that had a cut in the corner and which my father had always told me not to throw away, because “one day it will be needed.”

At dawn I left the house.

I left neither a letter nor a goodbye.

But before I closed the door, a new message appeared on Elena’s phone. I read only the first word: “Plan.”

I reached toward the screen when the engine of an unfamiliar car started up below the entrance. I went to the window, and a man got out of the car and looked straight toward our door. I could not see his face, but he was holding a folder. He quickly climbed the stairs, and I grasped the door handle when the bell rang outside and Elena woke up for the first time in her sleep…

Behind the door stood six o’clock in the morning and a man in a black jacket. I went down by the back stairs, but before I could run away, I heard his voice.

“Elena, open up. We have no time left.”

He knew my wife by name.

In a small hotel room on the other side of the city, my lawyer Niko was waiting for me. I gave him the metal box and told him everything.

“Why didn’t you go inside the house?” he asked.

“Because for the first time I realized: my disappearance was not part of their plan.”

Niko opened the box. Inside were the old work card, two flash drives, and the company’s bank statements.

“Philippe, this is not only betrayal,” he said. “Someone signed documents in your name.”

“Who?”

He did not answer me. He only played one recording. Elena’s voice could be heard.

“As soon as Philippe leaves, everything will be in our name.”

The recording ended when a man’s voice entered the room. I could not hear his first words, but at the end he said clearly:

“If he finds out the truth, we will both lose everything.”

Niko turned off the screen.

“There is a meeting tomorrow morning. Elena will come too. And this man already knows that you have disappeared…”

The next morning I entered Niko’s office, where a lawyer, an auditor, and my company’s financial manager were waiting for me. Rain struck the windows, and on the table stood the same small copper bell that I had taken from home. Seeing it calmed me strangely.

Elena arrived ten minutes late. With her was the man whom I had seen in front of our door that morning. Elena introduced him as Dato, the new partner, but as soon as I saw his face I recognized him: he had been my business’s former financial consultant.

“Philippe, all this is a misunderstanding,” Elena said.

“Then sit down and explain it to me.”

Dato pulled the chair back noisily.

“You disappeared, abandoned your wife, and now you are making scenes?”

Niko raised his hand.

“Let’s listen to the recording first.”

The auditor pressed the button. Elena’s voice sounded in the room.

“Philippe checks nothing. If I tell him that our marriage is over, he will sign everything, just so he can leave peacefully.”

Then Dato’s voice sounded.

“I already have his signature. The company will soon be ours.”

Elena’s face turned white.

“This is deception,” she whispered.

Niko opened the folder.

“No. This is your conversation, recorded in your own home, on the day when you secretly entered the office.”

I looked at Dato. Suddenly I understood why he had been trying to hurry me for years, why he had been asking me for digital signatures, and why Elena had always known when I was on a business trip. Together they were stealing not only my marriage, but also the company.

“Were you never in love with me?” I asked Elena.

She lowered her eyes.

“I wanted a life that you could give me.”

“And Dato?”

“He wanted your place.”

Silence fell in the room. For the first time I did not try to ease her pain.

“Your plan has failed,” I told them.

Niko placed a document in front of me. It said that the right to manage the company had been temporarily suspended and that all accounts were subject to inspection.

Dato jumped up.

“You can’t do this!”

“I already did.”

But precisely then a call came to my phone from an unknown number. A frightened woman’s voice sounded in the receiver.

“Philippe, if you want to know what happened after your disappearance, come to the old warehouse this evening. Alone. There is a person there because of whom everything began…”
