When My Husband Asked Me to Sign in His Own House, His Mother Smiled, but Her Face Changed After My Answer

That evening, twenty-six guests watched as a glass broke near my forehead and wine spilled over my white blouse. For several seconds I heard only the monotonous hum of the air conditioner and the clinking of a spoon against a porcelain cup. Sebastian stood in front of me, his hands clenched into fists, as if humiliating me in his own house were his legal right.

His mother, Teresa Valdes, calmly straightened her pearl necklace.

“Now at least you will learn to respect this family,” she said.

The words hurt me more than the shard of glass.

The dinner had been arranged to celebrate Sebastian’s promotion. At six in the evening I left the auditor’s office, spent almost an hour in traffic, and set the table as soon as I arrived home. The apartment in Juria was mine. I had bought it five years earlier, before I met Sebastian, and for years I had slept only four hours a day to pay the mortgage.

Teresa knew all of this.

She also knew that her son had not spent even one coin on buying this apartment.

She placed a burgundy leather folder beside my plate.

“Sign it.”

I opened the folder. Inside was a document prepared by a lawyer: I was giving half of the apartment to Sebastian and allowing him to use my property as collateral for the loan of their clinics.

“What loan are we talking about?” I asked.

Sebastian looked away.

“Twenty-eight million pesos,” Teresa replied. “The Corregidor clinic temporarily needs money.”

I laughed quietly.

“I will not use my apartment as collateral for your debt.”

The cousin sitting at the table lowered his head. Uncle Jaime cleared his throat. No one defended me.

Teresa slid the pen toward me.

“A married woman builds a life together with her husband.”

“I built this apartment before the marriage.”

Sebastian’s face immediately grew tense.

For two years I had endured his silence when I did not give him money, unexpected guests, forced dinners, and transfers demanded in the name of emergency medical care. Once he needed fifteen thousand pesos, then forty thousand, and then Teresa decided that I should give thirty thousand every month to their family.

That night, for the first time, I no longer felt guilt.

Only clarity.

“I will not sign.”

Teresa turned to her son.

“You will let her humiliate your family in front of everyone?”

Sebastian came closer to me.

!!!  My mother demanded that I leave a room for her in my new house, but after my calm reply she suddenly went pale

“Sign it and let’s finish.”

“No.”

“Do not make me.”

“This apartment is mine. I will not cover your secret debts with my property.”

Teresa struck the table with her hand.

“Everything you have, you have thanks to my son!”

“No,” I said, and for the first time I did not step back. “My son lives here only because I allowed it.”

Someone exhaled heavily.

Sebastian picked up a glass.

Then the glass crashed against the wall. The skin near my forehead burned, and shards scattered across the floor.

“You think you are greater than you are because you earn more than me!”

I did not cry.

Teresa sipped her wine.

“Apologize to your husband and sign.”

I took out my phone and photographed the broken glass, the bloody scratch, and the open folder.

“What are you doing?” Sebastian asked me.

“I am completing an audit.”

Teresa burst out laughing.

“You are ridiculous.”

I went toward the study and locked the door. I had hidden a second folder in the bottom drawer. A cheap black cardboard folder that I had prepared for seven weeks. Inside were bank statements, copies of messages, two contracts, and proof that someone had already submitted a loan application using a copy of my apartment documents.

There was only one thing I did not know: who had given the order.

My phone vibrated. I looked at a message from the notary.

“I found who brought your documents. It was not your husband.”

Behind the door Teresa was shouting, while I touched the folder’s lock with my fingers. At that moment the tongue of the lock lifted and…

I opened the folder, but there was no answer yet. I found only one small card, certified with the notary’s seal.

Sebastian shook the door so hard that the clock hanging on the wall fell down.

“Mariana, open up!”

“Step back, Sebastian.”

“This is our family matter.”

“No. Now it is evidence.”

I heard the guests whispering in the hallway. Someone was about to call the police, but Teresa immediately silenced them.

The notary called me by phone.

“Do not open everything alone,” he told me. “Lawyer Paula is coming to your address.”

“Who took my documents?”

A short silence fell.

“The person who is behaving most calmly that night.”

The door shook again.

In the folder I found a statement of transfers. In twenty months, six hundred and twenty thousand pesos had left my account. Every amount was requested from Sebastian’s number, but deposited into the accounts of their clinics.

I also saw a letter signed by Teresa: a list of the documents given to the bank. Next to my apartment certificate it said: “Owner’s consent later.”

Then I understood that this was not only pressure. They had already taken a step.

“Mariana!” Teresa roared. “If you do not open this door, tomorrow you will be left on the street!”

Paula called me.

“The police are also on their way,” she told me. “And now I have to ask you the most important question: are you ready to hear a recording that may finally end your marriage?”

I pressed the recording button. A woman’s voice sounded in the room, and I immediately recognized Teresa’s calm, cold tone…

Teresa’s voice sounded in the study, while the noise behind the door stopped in one second.

“If Mariana signs, excellent. If she does not, we will use what we already have and then arrange the consent as well. You only obtain the documents.”

Sebastian’s voice followed.

“What if she finds out about the loan?”

“By then we will already have the money. And if she becomes stubborn, remind her that a wife must obey her husband.”

I stopped the recording.

I was looking at my hands. My fingers were trembling, although my voice no longer wavered.

Paula arrived half an hour later. The notary and two police officers were with her. She was holding a small recorder, while the smell of burnt coffee stood on my desk.

“Where did you get this recording?” she asked me.

“Sebastian sent it to me.”

“Why?”

A new message appeared on the phone. Sebastian wrote to me that his mother intended to place all the blame on him and that, if he wanted to save himself, he had to provide everything.

Paula read the message carefully.

“This is not remorse, Mariana. This is fear.”

I opened the door. Teresa stood in front, her face pale with agitation, and Sebastian stood behind her. For the first time he looked not angry, but frightened.

“Mother, tell her that this was only a conversation,” he said.

“Be quiet,” Teresa answered.

“You told me that Mariana would sign in the end.”

“Be quiet!”

Paula placed the recorder on the table and played the recording from the beginning. Teresa’s words filled the room. The police officer took a copy of the recording, and the notary confirmed that my signature did not exist on the documents.

“This is edited!” Teresa shouted.

“Then an examination will establish that,” Paula told her calmly.

Sebastian lowered his head.

“Mariana, I only wanted to take the money. I did not think it would go this far.”

“You tried to take my house.”

“My mother told me everything would be temporary.”

“But you still gave her my documents.”

He could not find an answer.

That same evening the bank blocked the loan file. However, the next morning Paula received a call from three small partners. They checked the accounts of their own clinics and discovered almost six million pesos in unexplained transfers.

They needed my apartment not to repay the loan, but to hide a larger hole.

Teresa’s phone rang then. She answered, heard several words, and suddenly leaned against the wall.

“What happened?” Sebastian asked.

Teresa looked toward me.

“The partners are calling an emergency meeting. And they say that the main evidence is already in their hands…”
