The husband called our marriage only a deal, but during our honeymoon one question from me erased the smile from his face

That night, when Antonio Russo reduced our marriage to zero, he brought a locked yacht to the door and told me that I had to go to the island alone with him.

Three weeks earlier I had become his wife. There had been neither flowers, nor guests, nor a kiss. Only a cold courtroom, a signature, and a platinum ring that came onto my finger in exchange for my father’s debt.

“You are only my wife on paper,” Antonio told me that same evening while straightening his tie.

Then he left.

From that time I lived on the seventieth floor of the Bellini Tower, like a bird locked in a beautiful cage. Expensive furniture stood in the rooms, the city’s lights flickered on the windows, but there was no human warmth in the house. Only the steps of security members, the quiet hum of the elevator, and the cautious beating of my heart.

On a rainy evening I stood by the window and ran my fingers over a small ivory-colored medallion. It had remained to me from my mother. Inside was her only photograph, so small that the face could barely be seen. When I was afraid, I opened the medallion, as if my mother could answer me from there.

The door lock clicked.

I flinched.

Antonio was supposed to be in Miami for another four days. His return never meant good news.

“Sophia,” his voice sounded.

“I am here.”

He entered the room and handed his wet coat to the guard. Despite the rain, his black suit was flawless. He had only a small scratch on his jaw.

“Pack.”

“Where are we going?”

“Where I am going.”

“Antonio, I am not your thing.”

Something flashed in his eyes, but immediately disappeared.

“You are my wife. Where I go, you come too.”

“On our wedding night you told me that this was only a formal arrangement.”

“The plan changed.”

He came three steps closer to me. When he brought his hand near my face, I instinctively stepped back. He knitted his brows, but only moved a fallen strand of hair behind my ear.

“We are going for two weeks. To a warm place.”

“Why?”

“You will rest.”

“With you?”

A shadow of a smile appeared on his lips.

“This is the honeymoon, Sophia.”

An hour later I stood in the underground parking lot. The driver, Marco, took my small suitcase. Antonio spoke quietly on the phone, then looked toward me.

“Are we going to the airport?” I asked.

“No.”

The car turned toward the harbor.

There, on the illuminated wooden pier, a huge white yacht was waiting for us. The sea wind struck the medallion against my chest, as if my mother, locked inside, were begging me not to go aboard.

“Is this your yacht?”

“It is mine.”

“Where are we going?”

Antonio put his hand on my waist and brought me aboard.

“To my island near Antigua.”

In the bedroom I found twelve new dresses, all exactly my size. This journey had not been impulsive. Antonio had planned everything in advance.

At breakfast, on the open deck, I noticed for the first time that his gaze controlled every exit.

“Why did you bring me?” I asked.

“We need to convince some people that our marriage is real.”

“So I have to play a loving wife in front of your partners?”

“No.”

The coldness returned to his voice.

“Then what do you want?”

Antonio leaned forward.

“Perhaps I decided it is time to truly get to know my wife.”

“I am not your property.”

“Not yet,” he told me.

That night I could not sleep. At dawn, when the yacht was gently rocking on the waves, I heard a quiet argument behind the door. For the first time Marco’s voice was frightened.

“If she finds this out, she will leave immediately.”

Antonio answered him:

“That is exactly why she must not find out.”

Then the door handle slowly lowered. I closed the medallion in my fist and rose from the bed. The door opened, and Antonio entered holding a dark leather folder. He took one step toward me and reached out to take out the first sheet…

Antonio’s hand touched the folder, but at that moment a powerful удар sounded on the deck. The yacht tilted. The folder fell to the floor and several sheets scattered across the wooden surface.

Marco appeared in the doorway.

“A boat is following us,” he said.

Antonio’s face immediately hardened.

“How many are there?”

“Three. They have weapons.”

I looked at one sheet, but Antonio covered me with his body.

“Stay in the room,” he told me.

“What is written there?”

“Something that is not safe for you.”

“Is it about my life?”

For the first time he could not answer me.

Outside, the roar of the engine and men’s shouting could be heard. Antonio took out a weapon, then squeezed my hand so strongly that the marks of his fingers remained on my wrist.

“If anyone comes, do not open.”

“And you?”

“I always come back.”

He left. I heard the sound of the door locking and reached for the sheet left on the floor. My name was written on it, but the signature below did not belong to my father.

A few minutes later, a gunshot sounded.

Then everything fell silent.

The door opened. Antonio stood there with a bloody shoulder, and instead of the folder he held a small wooden box.

“Where is Marco?” I asked.

“Alive.”

“What did you hide from me?”

Antonio put the box on the table.

“Tomorrow we are going to a clinic.”

“Why?”

He looked at me with such a gaze as if the answer was dangerous for him too.

“Because your father’s debt was never the real reason for our marriage…

The next morning Antonio took me to the yacht’s medical room. The windows were covered with curtains, and the smell of alcohol and sea salt stood in the air. Marco stood at the door, with a new bandage wrapped around his shoulder.

“Why are we here?” I asked.

Antonio looked at the doctor.

“Tell her.”

The doctor, a woman named Lucia, placed three documents on the table. Her fingers were trembling.

“Mrs. Bianchi, this is the debt agreement signed by your father.”

“I know. I married because of this debt.”

“No,” Antonio said. “This signature is forged.”

A low hum of the sea engine sounded in the room.

I stared at the document.

“What did you say?”

“Your father never signed this agreement. Nor did he take the amount that he supposedly borrowed from me.”

Lucia handed me the second sheet.

“We conducted an examination of the signature. The composition of the ink was not used at all during that period. The document was created later.”

“Then why did my father remain silent?”

Antonio tightened his jaw.

“Because they threatened him before his death.”

My mother’s medallion lay cold in my hand.

“Who?”

Antonio opened the wooden box. Inside lay an old telephone and a small memory card.

“Your uncle, Ricardo.”

The words took my breath away.

Ricardo Bianchi was my father’s older brother. For years he told everyone that he was trying to save our family.

Antonio turned on the recording.

First a quiet rustling sounded, then my father’s tired voice.

“Antonio, if you hear this, it will already be too late. Ricardo stole my share of the company. He knows that Sophia is the only person he cannot influence. If the pressure on her continues, protect my daughter, but do not tell her until you have evidence.”

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Soțul meu mi-a cerut divorțul înaintea operației pe creier, iar când am răspuns calm, zâmbetul lui a dispărut

Ricardo’s voice sounded in the recording.

“Marry her anyway. People will think that you owe her because of the debt. Then the girl will sign everything.”

I could hear my own heartbeat in my ears.

“You knew,” I told Antonio.

“I knew that danger existed. I did not know that he had a hand in your father’s murder.”

“Then why did you humiliate me? Why did you tell me that I was only your wife on paper?”

Antonio lowered his eyes.

“Because I wanted you not to become attached to me. I knew that if you fell in love with me, my enemies would use you against me.”

“And now?”

“Now it is already too late.”

His sincerity hurt me more than the lie.

At that same moment the telephone rang. Marco answered, heard several words, and lost color.

“Sir, Ricardo is at the harbor. He did not come alone.”

Antonio turned off the recording.

“How many men?”

“The entire city police.”

I was still hearing my father’s voice in my mind when Lucia took another envelope from under the table.

“You must see this too,” she said.

My name was written on the envelope, and on the back, in an unfamiliar hand, only one sentence: “Antonio Russo is not the man you think he is…”
