An Unknown Woman Was Holding My Twins to Her Chest in the Kitchen, but When She Mentioned My Mother-in-Law’s Name, My Hands Began to Tremble

I entered the kitchen and, instead of the crying of my five-month-old twins, I encountered such silence that I froze on the threshold.

In front of me stood an unfamiliar woman. She had one child pressed to her chest, and the other wrapped around her back. Both were breathing calmly. One little hand was clutching the woman’s blue uniform, while the other child’s cheek rested on her shoulder.

At that moment I was holding a briefcase and could not understand whether I should start shouting or call the police.

“Mr. Rivas, do not be frightened. The children are fine,” the woman told me so calmly, as if I had entered my own home.

“Who are you?”

She put the knife on the wooden board. The smell of zucchini, freshly cut onion, and the scent of the children’s warm skin mingled together.

“Lucia Hernandez. Doña Teresa sent me.”

At the sound of my mother-in-law’s name, something froze inside my chest.

Teresa had not called me for four months. Since her daughter, Daniela, had put several clothes into a bag and slammed the door as if she had left the final chapter of her life in this house.

“I can no longer endure the children and your constant work,” she told me then.

I tried to stop her, but Daniela shouted only one thing at me:

“You tell everyone that you are a good father, but at night you do not listen to their crying at all!”

Since then Teresa had been assuring me that I was leaving Daniela alone, while I justified myself by saying that I was working for the family.

That evening I left the meeting in Polanco early. During the last three months, four nannies and one night nurse had quit. I bought smart cribs, white-noise machines, foreign formula, and covered an entire wall in the nursery with cameras.

Nothing helped.

They cried as if they had invisible pain inside their bodies.

“I did not hire anyone,” I told Lucia.

“I know. The nurse called me. She had to leave urgently. When I arrived, the children were already crying so hard that they could not even catch their breath.”

“And you simply came in?”

“Teresa gave me the key.”

Lucia pointed to the cabinet standing in the corner. Two fabric carriers could be seen there. One had little yellow moons embroidered on it. I noticed it for the first time. Daniela had bought it during her pregnancy and then told me that she would never use it, because “holding the children in one’s arms would be enough.”

“How did you calm them?”

“They needed warmth, movement, and sound. Not toys.”

First she took one child off me, then the other. She put the boy, Mateo, into my arms.

“Do not hold him like he will break. Pull him to your chest.”

I obeyed. Mateo hid his face in my shirt and immediately became silent.

I heard the ticking of the clock in the room. For several seconds I only looked at my son.

My eyes began to burn.

“Why do you know all this?” I asked.

Lucia glanced at Emiliano, who was sleeping on her back.

“Since I was twelve years old, I raised three younger brothers. And I know what it means to spend your whole life thinking that you are getting in other people’s way.”

Then she lowered her voice.

“Teresa called me last night. She was crying. She told me that she could not sleep because her grandchildren were suffering… and perhaps you were suffering too.”

“Teresa had never worried about me.”

“You heard only half the truth from her.”

Lucia took a small folded sheet of paper from her pocket, but immediately hid it again.

“What is that?”

“What Teresa herself did not dare to say.”

“Tell me right now.”

The woman looked toward the kitchen door. The sound of the elevator came from the hallway. We both fell silent.

Lucia put the paper on the table and slowly reached her hand toward it…

Lucia’s hand touched the paper, but at that very moment the hallway door opened.

“Ricardo!” Teresa’s voice rang out.

She rushed into the kitchen, traces of tears still visible on her face. She stopped when she saw Lucia.

“You should not have come,” she whispered to her.

“You told me that there was no more time to hide it.”

“I did not tell you to tell him everything.”

“I have been looking for Daniela for four months,” I said. “And now you are both speaking as if you hid my wife somewhere alive.”

Teresa grabbed the chair. Her fingers were trembling so much that the wooden back was shaking.

“Daniela did not run away in the way you think.”

“Then where is she?”

Lucia lowered her eyes.

“She did not recognize herself, Ricardo. After the children were born, sometimes she stared at one point for hours. Once she told me that she heard someone’s voice in Mateo’s crying.”

“Why did no one tell me?”

Teresa barely managed to gather her voice.

“Because Daniela made me swear. She was afraid they would consider her a bad mother and take the children away from her.”

I looked at the folded sheet of paper lying on the table.

“Is this Daniela’s letter?”

Teresa did not answer me.

Lucia opened the paper. Inside there was only one sentence, in Daniela’s handwriting:

“If Ricardo finds out why I left, I will never forgive him again.”

Teresa, standing in the doorway, covered her face with her hands.

“This is not all,” she said. “Look at the other side of the paper…”

And when Lucia turned the paper over, I saw such fear in her eyes that I understood: written there was not the reason Daniela had left, but the whole truth about my family…

On the other side of the paper was the children’s doctor’s stamp. Below it, written by hand, was a date that fell two weeks before Daniela’s departure.

“The reason for their crying is the formula. Both have a severe intolerance. It is not possible to tell the father this without the patient’s consent.”

I stared at the words for a long time and could not breathe.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

Teresa raised her head.

“Daniela took you to the doctor. You were at a meeting that day. The doctor said that the children were in pain, but that additional tests were necessary.”

“Why did she not tell me?”

“Because that same day you shouted at her.”

“I did not shout.”

Lucia looked at me calmly.

“You told her that she was imagining everything. Do you remember?”

I remembered.

Daniela was standing in the kitchen, holding crying Mateo in her arms. I was checking my phone and telling her that she turned every little thing into a tragedy. At the time I blamed it on tiredness.

Now my own voice returned to my head.

“There is nothing wrong with the children. You cannot take care of them.”

Teresa put a small voice recorder on the table.

“Daniela left this with me.”

“Why did you not give it to me until now?”

“Because there was something in her voice that I thought would be dangerous for you to hear.”

Lucia pressed the button.

For several seconds, only breathing could be heard. Then Daniela’s quiet voice sounded:

“Ricardo, if you ever listen to this, know that I did not want to leave. I wanted someone to believe that the children were crying from pain. And every day I believed more and more that I was a bad mother.”

The strength disappeared from my knees.

“Where is Daniela?” I asked.

Teresa bit her lips.

“She was at a clinic. Lucia took her there.”

“Was?”

That one word changed everything in the room.

Lucia took another paper out of her bag.

“The clinic called me this morning. Daniela left. She left a note saying that if you learned the truth, I should no longer protect the children from you.”

“From me?”

“No,” Teresa said. “From herself.”

At that very moment an unknown number lit up on my phone. The call rang only once and stopped. Then a message arrived.

“If you want to find me, come to the old station at six in the morning. Alone. Do not bring the children.”

I was still looking at the screen when Lucia saw the number and her expression changed.

“This is not Daniela,” she said. “This number belonged to only one person…”
