On Christmas Eve, I Asked to Stay in the Restaurant with My Child, but My Boss’s Look Suddenly Lost Its Color

On Christmas Eve, my six-year-old daughter woke up in a corner booth of the restaurant, wrapped in my coat, and her whisper rang through the entire empty hall.

“Mom, can we stay here for Christmas? It’s warm here… We don’t have any food left at home.”

I gripped the mop so tightly that my fingers hurt. At that moment I was certain that I would lose both my job and the last place where we felt safe at night.

My name is Grace Miller. For the last few months, I had been cleaning James Whitmore’s restaurant at night. When the guests left, the fire in the kitchen went out and the music stopped, and I appeared silently, like a shadow. I washed the floors, wiped the tables, took out the trash, and in the morning, before the cooks arrived, I left quietly again.

James knew my face. Sometimes he thanked me. But I doubted whether he even remembered my name.

That evening I could not leave Chloe at home. The neighbor who sometimes looked after her had ended up in the hospital, and I had no choice. I took off my warmest coat, put the child to bed in a far booth, and asked her not to wake up until I finished working.

But at half past ten at night Chloe opened her eyes. First she looked at the Christmas lights blinking on the windows, and then at me.

“Really, can’t we stay?”

“No, sweetheart. We’ll go home soon.”

“But it’s cold there, right?”

I could not answer.

The heating in our apartment had been turned off three days earlier. There was half a bottle of milk and two boiled potatoes in the refrigerator. That day I told Chloe that I had already had dinner so that I could leave both potatoes for her.

She did not deserve this. Nor was my shame hers to carry.

“Mom, on holidays people give each other food, right?” she asked me.

“That’s right.”

“Then why does nobody give us any?”

I lowered my head, as if I were looking for a stain on the floor. A tear ran from my eyes, and I quickly wiped it away with the back of my hand.

That was when I noticed James standing at the entrance to the hall.

I did not know when he had come in. He was wearing a black coat, holding documents in his hand, and had an expression on his face as if he were fighting something.

“Mr. Whitmore, forgive me,” I stood up immediately. “I couldn’t find anyone to watch the child. She won’t bother anyone. I’ll finish right now.”

“Sit down, Grace,” he told me.

The calmness of his voice frightened me even more.

“If you want, we’ll leave right now.”

“I didn’t say that you should leave.”

Chloe poked her head out of the coat.

“Are you the one who cooks the food here?”

James smiled for the first time, but the smile immediately disappeared.

“Sometimes,” he answered.

“Tell Mom that we don’t have food at home today.”

“Chloe!” I whispered.

But it was already too late.

The papers fell from James’s hand onto the floor. He did not bend down to pick them up. He simply looked at my daughter, then at me, and an expression of pain appeared on his face, one that was completely unfamiliar to me.

“You haven’t done anything wrong,” I told Chloe and pulled her into my arms.

James went toward the kitchen.

A few seconds later I heard the cupboards opening, then the refrigerator door opened and the clatter of pots sounded. The smell of hot bread and cinnamon spread through the hall.

The billionaire restaurant owner was cooking for us on Christmas Eve.

When the door opened, James brought out two steaming plates. But my heart did not speed up at the sight of the food.

I saw a small, folded piece of paper in his hand. My surname was written on the paper.

“Grace,” he said, stopping in front of me, “while this child eats, you need to know why I actually knew you…”

His hand reached toward the folder…

He put the folder on the table. Chloe immediately picked up a spoon, while I stared at the paper.

“What does it mean that you knew me?” I asked.

James pulled out a chair.

“Let her eat first. We should not have this conversation in front of her.”

“If it concerns my job, tell me right now.”

“It concerns your job too. But not only your job.”

Chloe ate silently. The spoon touched the edge of the plate, and that small sound was heard strangely sharply.

James did not open the folder. He only placed his fingers on its leather cover.

“We have to go to the clinic tomorrow morning,” he said.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“If you don’t go, it may be too late.”

“For what?”

He lowered his eyes.

“To prove what they hid years ago.”

At that moment the telephone rang in the kitchen. James answered it. His face slowly turned pale.

“No, Doctor Hayes,” he said. “Don’t open the file until I come.”

Then he looked toward me.

“Grace, who told you that your husband died in that accident?”

The spoon fell from my hand.

My husband, Daniel, died six years ago. At least, that is what I thought.

James opened the folder, but I did not have time to read the first sheet. Outside, the sound of car brakes rang out, and the restaurant door opened heavily.

The man who entered looked like James.

Only hatred stood in his eyes…

The door opened and the man who entered walked straight toward us. He was wearing an expensive coat, but his face was tense. James immediately stood up.

“Robert, what are you doing here?”

“My file is with you,” he replied. “And that woman is here.”

His gaze stopped on me. Chloe immediately pressed herself against my side.

“Who is this?” I asked.

James walked between me and the man.

“He is my brother. Robert Whitmore.”

Robert snickered.

“Don’t lie. Six years was enough. She has to learn everything now.”

James opened the folder and spread the documents across the table. On the top sheet were the clinic’s stamp, my name, and Chloe’s date of birth.

“How did you get this?” I muttered.

“Because Daniel Miller was my brother,” James said.

The hall around me seemed to empty.

“No. My husband was Daniel Miller. He told me that he had no family.”

“That’s what he thought,” James exhaled heavily. “My father hid his existence. Daniel was the son of another mother and considered him a threat in the inheritance matter. When we quarreled, Daniel said that he would expose everything. That same night, the accident happened.”},{

Robert struck the table with his fist.

“Enough.”

“No,” James said. “Six years was enough lies.”

He handed me the second sheet.

“After the accident, Daniel was taken to the hospital. He was alive. But our father paid the doctor so that his death would be recorded in the files. Then Daniel was transferred to a private clinic under another name.”

“Where is he?” I asked.

James lowered his eyes.

“He died two years later. He left this letter for you.”

He placed a folded sheet in front of me. The paper smelled of cinnamon, as if Daniel had written it in our old kitchen.

My hands were trembling.

“Grace, if you ever learn that I did not make a choice, know that until the last day I thought about you and Chloe.”

Then there was Daniel’s signature.

I could not find my voice for Chloe. James told me that he had already had a genetic examination conducted: Chloe was Daniel’s daughter and, accordingly, was considered the Whitmore family’s legal heir.

Robert hid his face in his hands.

“This is impossible,” he repeated.

“What was impossible was hiding it from us for so long,” I told him.

Just then James’s phone rang. He answered it, and after a few seconds his voice changed.

“What happened?”

The frightened voice of a woman could be heard from the other side.

James looked toward the window.

“Doctor Hayes, tell me directly.”

He fell silent, then turned toward me.

“Someone has already entered the clinic. The main file is gone. And Robert’s car is visible on the cameras…”

Robert looked toward the door, then said quietly:

“You don’t know what else is in that file…”

At that same moment a police siren sounded outside, but no relief appeared on James’s face. He told me only one sentence:

“Grace, this will not end in the restaurant…”
