My Husband Gave My Precious Membership to His Mistress and Asked Me to Leave Quietly — But His Face Suddenly Lost Color

That morning my husband called me and asked me to give my eleven-o’clock procedure to his mistress, while she was already standing in my white robe in the club lobby.

“Grace, please, don’t make a big deal out of this,” Lucas told me on the phone.

I was still sitting in the car and turning a small copper key in my hand. My mother had given me the key on my wedding day. A lion’s head was carved on it, and she always told me that sometimes you have to lock the door yourself, even if a loved one remains inside.

At the time, her words seemed simply strange to me.

Now I understood for the first time what they meant.

I had been going to Aurelia Wellness Club every other Friday for almost two years. When I reached reception, Emily stared insistently at the screen, as if hoping my name would suddenly disappear. Behind her stood Sienna Vale — tall, with silvery hair, her body wrapped in my robe.

There was a small golden embroidery on my robe: G. H. These initials stood for my mother’s surname, Hartwell.

Sienna saw me and was not even ashamed. She only knitted her brows.

“Lucas told me that you don’t come here anymore,” she said to me.

“Really?”

“Yes. He said that he pays for the membership himself.”

Emily murmured uncertainly:

“Mrs. Bennett, I cannot change your reservation without additional confirmation.”

“You already have confirmation,” Sienna interrupted. “Lucas had me call.”

Lucas’s voice could still be heard on the phone.

“Grace, she is already there. She had a terrible week. Just give up the procedure and let’s go home.”

“There are two of us living at home, Lucas.”

He fell silent for several seconds.

“Don’t start now.”

It was his favorite phrase. As if my pain were not betrayal, but badly chosen timing.

Twenty-three days had passed since the florist called me and asked where to deliver Friday’s bouquet for Sienna Vale. Then I saw a photo on his phone in which that woman was smiling with an expensive bag, and it said: “Perfect night.”

After that, everything became obvious. As soon as Lucas came home, he took a shower, changed his phone code, and mentioned the names of restaurants where he had never been with me.

But what hurt me most was that Lucas was not letting Sienna only into his bed. Lucas was giving her my places too.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo negó comprarme un collar, pero su asistente lo llevaba sentado sobre sus piernas y entonces él dejó de sonreír

He gave my place at the charity dinner to “Lucas’s guest.” The jeweler’s invitation, which had come to me for years, was sent to Sienna’s address. Every time Lucas calmly explained to me that it was simply a practical decision.

He convinced people that replacing me was a way to avoid awkwardness.

Behind reception, a large copper plaque listed the tenants of the building. At the bottom, in small letters, it said: “Grace Hartwell Building.”

That name was left to me by my mother. During her lifetime, the building belonged to the Hartwell Foundation, but one month before the wedding she transferred the ownership entirely into my name. Lucas knew this. At least, I thought he knew.

Sienna’s gaze moved to the plaque, and doubt appeared on her face for the first time.

I looked at Emily.

“Please do not put Mrs. Vale on my reservation. And call Natalie Ross. Tell her that Grace Hartwell wants to speak with her.”

Lucas held his breath on the phone.

“Grace, what are you doing?”

I looked at my name engraved on the plaque and realized that Lucas was not only distributing the spa. Perhaps he was touching something much bigger in my life.

At that moment the elevator doors opened. Natalie Ross came out with quick steps, holding a black folder, and walked straight toward me. She put the folder on the table, opened the clasp, and reached toward the first page…

Natalie looked first at Sienna, then at Lucas’s voice, which was still coming through my phone.

“Mrs. Bennett, this conversation must continue in a private room,” she said.

“No,” I answered. “She must hear it too.”

Sienna bit her lips.

“What are we supposed to understand?”

Natalie closed the folder.

“I cannot tell you anything yet until the lawyer arrives.”

Lucas raised his voice on the phone.

“Natalie, this is a family matter.”

“No, Mr. Bennett,” she said calmly. “It is a building matter now.”

Her words caused such silence in the hall that I could even hear the clicking of the coffee machine.

Sienna tightened the belt of the robe.

“Lucas, you told me that everything was yours.”

“Sienna, be quiet.”

This time his voice was not tired, but frightened.

Natalie opened the folder again. Inside were tangled accounts, several signatures, and a small memory card with a red sticker attached to it.

“All this began twenty-three days ago,” she told me. “We only needed your permission to continue the investigation to the end.”

!!!  La șase luni după înmormântarea soțului meu, l-am găsit lângă mormânt, iar când m-a văzut a făcut un pas spre mine

“What investigation?”

Natalie leaned toward me.

“The person who thought you had already disappeared made a very big mistake.”

At that moment the hall doors opened and a gray-haired lawyer entered. He was holding a manila folder. He looked directly at Lucas’s mistress and said:

“Mrs. Vale, you must hear this too.”

He put the folder on the table, took out the top sheet, and adjusted his glasses. Then he turned toward me.

“Mrs. Hartwell, are you ready to learn what your husband did?”…

“I am ready,” I said, although I barely recognized my voice.

We moved into a small conference room next to the club. A watercolor painting hung on the wall, and napkins scented with a faint smell of lemon were arranged on the table. Lucas was connected by video call. He had the camera on in the car, and the city streets were changing quickly behind him.

The lawyer, Archil Meladze, took a document from the folder.

“Mrs. Bennett, your husband has been trying for the last six months to gain control over the Grace Hartwell Building.”

Sienna raised her head.

“What does ‘control’ mean?”

“He submitted documents to several banks as if he possessed the management authority of the foundation. Using those authorities, he took out a loan and pledged the building’s income as collateral.”

The copper key squeezed so strongly between my fingers that it cut my skin.

Lucas shouted:

“This is a complete lie! Grace knows that I managed everything.”

“I knew that you checked the accounting,” I told him. “You were not given management.”

Archil unfolded a second sheet.

“Here is the property agreement executed before your marriage. The building and all the foundation’s shares belong only to you. Lucas Bennett has neither a power of attorney nor the right to sign.”

Sienna’s face changed.

“But he told me that all of this belonged to him.”

“He has told many things,” I answered.

Archil inserted the memory card into a small device. In a few seconds Lucas’s voice filled the room, recorded in Natalie’s office.

“Grace doesn’t care about anything suspicious. In a few days I’ll get her to sign. She thinks these are only rents, but the building must pass into my name.”

In the recording someone asked Lucas:

“What if she refuses?”

“She won’t. I made everything easier for her all her life. In the end she’ll even be grateful.”

!!!  Mi esposa se vistió para cenar con otro hombre y me ordenó aceptarlo; entonces vio lo que yo sostenía y dejó de sonreír

Nobody was breathing in the room.

Lucas shook the camera.

“This was obtained illegally!”

Natalie answered calmly:

“The camera was in our office. You knew that.”

Sienna slowly stood up.

“You told me that your wife owned nothing.”

For the first time Lucas could not think of anything to say.

And I realized that the betrayal had not only been bringing another woman in. He wanted to remove my name from the wall and hand my life over to someone else.

Archil handed me the last document.

“Unfortunately, you must look at one more thing. The loan agreement was approved yesterday. The money has already been transferred.”

“Where?”

He turned the phone toward me. An unfamiliar account number appeared on the screen.

At that moment Lucas’s phone rang. He looked at the screen and went pale.

“Who is it?” I asked.

Lucas did not answer me. He ended the call, but a new message came immediately.

Natalie saw my face and said quietly:

“Apparently the bank has already discovered that the money was transferred somewhere else again…”

Lucas hid the screen, but I still read the last words of the message: “The police are on the way…”
